Imagine doing everything you can for a team, anchoring a great defense, getting flamed by the media and part of the fans because they don't understand your game, and then even your teammates clearly don't respect you. Props to Rudy for staying professional. I don't know many people who would be able to take what's thrown at him. Might explain some of his "tantrums" as well." Other players with similar abilities (Mutombo, Ben Wallace, even Bill Russell to an extent) were never treated like this. The pistons used to give Ben Wallace touches early in the game to get him involved and make him feel part of the collective. And he was a terrible offensive player as well ! @@Random-ps4dlHe does understand the basics though, most of these examples Rudy sees his mis match, seals them off in the paint with a wide base, keeps an arm back to gauge where the defender is going to move and has his dominant hand high to receive the pass, exactly what you’d teach a back to the basket centre to do. It’s not always the basket the team needs but if you’re 4 seconds in to the shot clock and your centre is in that position the logical pass is in to the paint.

@matthansen6341Ай бұрын
I only watched half of this but you missed an important nuance. Gobert’s limitation is dribbling, not so much catching (unless the pass is thrown low). Pretty much all your highlights are plays where he has to dribble or reach low to gather the ball. That was not the situation wherein he had Barnes sealed directly under the basket. Gobert has been elite (Giannis level) at finishing at the rim most of his career, ie, offensive putbacks, oops, etc. If Randle had made that pass, Gobert either dunks or gets fouled nearly every time. Also, if you expect him to bust his balls on defense all game, a good teammate would pass to him a few times, especially in these situations where he can be successful.
@MrBori555Ай бұрын
perfect take. I feel like coach nick gets lots in his own narrative sometimes. on that particular play, Rudy did what youre supposed to do. Randle iso does not yield a better chance. How do I know? @urbaindelva7869Ай бұрын
@@MrBori555Randle can handle, but he ain't understandin'.
@makelist8095Ай бұрын
Yeah this is an excellent nuance to add to the conversation. It highlights exactly *why* Gobert is such a hole on offense. It’s incredibly hard for a team to run a play for a center that can’t hold the ball for more than 3 seconds without coughing it up, especially when he moves so slowly and awkwardly. When KAT was there last season it was easy for him to draw double teams or at the very least draw Rudy’s man on his drives to the rim. This gave Rudy many opportunities to take one or 0 dribbles before his shot because he had a clear path the the basket. But with KAT gone, and Randle being a far cry from KAT offensively, it’s really hard to get Gobert the same looks he was getting last year. I would caution against ever saying Rudy is a good scorer if you just get him the ball the right way. We have never seen him play effectively on that end of the floor unless there is another offensive weapon big man at PF. Even in that situation he’s mediocre at best. It’s not a failure of Rudy’s teammates to get him the ball the correct way, it’s a failure of Rudy to be effective in the openings that his team currently provides.

Gobert’s hands are the biggest myth in the NBA. This guy is a huge Gobert hater. The pass from Gobert at 2:34 he would have called a drop if Gobert was at the receiving end. But since Gobert threw it, it’s a bad pass. If you really watch the centers around the league that aren’t elite offensively they all drop passes. Meanwhile Gobert has NBA record for most dunks in a season and they’re all assisted or putbacks (which require him to catch). The real reason they don’t pass to him is if it’s not a wide open dunk or lob the defense will double Gobert instantly and he’s not skilled enough to protect the ball or consistently pass out.

As a Frenchman, I may have the beginnings of an explanation. So, you all know the famous “Croissant”. Know that there are several recipes, and one of the most famous is “The butter croissant”. Rudy is tall (2.16m), so he has to eat a lot. If he eats 3 or 4 croissants before each match, the amount of butter he has on his hands is astronomical ! Which explains why the ball slides so much! Rudy GoBeurre, Rudy Gobutter, butter hand. Thank you for your attention.

IF YOU PLAY HIM AND HE ESTABLISHES POSITION UNDER THE POST AT POINT BLANK AND EVEN MORE AGAINST A SMALLER OPPONENT YOU HAVE TO DO JUST ONE THING....................................... PASS HIM THE F......NG BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PERIOD. IF HE MISSES A FEW ITS OK. STILL A VERY HIGH CHANCE HE WILL SCORE OR GET FOUL...... Sometimes you see that the passes to Gobert are towards his knees when he fumbles it. Ofc he still fumbles normal passes but from what I've seen it's when he has to fight for position and the ball being thrown to his knees is when he fumbles the most. Like maybe they should try passing it above his hips to make it easier for their teammate.

As a Knicks fan, the lack of emphasis put on Randle this video was startling. It looked for a second like he might be talked about more critically, but we breezed right past it. Randle gives little effort on defense and has very poor tendencies on offense. He consistently has a poor attitude and brings his team down. Yeah, he is a great player and can be a positive contributor, but this has been a clearly defined trend that Gobert has become the most recent scapegoat for. This is not to excuse Gobert of his misgivings, especially on offense, but to basically avoids Randle and place little to no fault on him just seems disingenuous.

TLDR: He's been given mismatch opportunities his entire career. He is bad at them the vast majority of the time. Also, he's bad vibes I prefer focusing on the positives of the NBA, but something about Gobert makes most fans blind to faults. I totally get that that the average fan still thinks that Rudy just isn't being treated fairly, back when he was in SLC I watched almost every game and felt that way too. But when you look at the possessions that end with the ball in Rudy's hands it is just almost always a negative. I was a huge Rudy fan for the Jazz, but I truly think I just wanted to believe that he was better than he is. If he puts the ball on the deck, the play will, statistically, go poorly. Same if he looks to make a pass. If he has to do anything besides place the ball in the hoop it's a bad possession. It's frustrating playing with someone who cannot make a play for themselves, but an NBA player who you can't trust to make even a handoff is brutal. He has only offset his offensive struggles by being the literal best defender in the world 4 separate seasons (and arguably the best several others), but when he isn't a walking top 5 defense unto himself he's just an outright negative. Plus, everyone in the league thinks he sucks as a dude. Maybe they're all racist against the French (they're not, re: Wemby, Parker, my GOAT Killian Hayes, etc.), but it seems like he just kinda sucks to play with. Nothing worse than a dude who isn't fun to be around, complains constantly, and messes up any opportunity that requires a decision. He was born to stop buckets, just unfortunately on both sides of the court.

@angelb4232Ай бұрын
Having played guard with a bad team-mate (where personally I would tell everyone to get out the way and let me do my things) but I still passed them the ball and got ready to play hard on defense. For the simple fact of keeping the other team honest on him, but also strengthen my guy mentally. If he messes up, that is an extra incentive to give 50% more on the next defensive play or simply for him to grab that rebound and look for me first... but really to keep the other team honest, because he might miss 7 out of 10 times, but those 3 times might be in clutch moments when we need it the most. He could have passed him the ball and cut to the ring when his defender turned around to watch the paint

At his height Rudy Gobert should average 20 points and 10 rebounds. But he is and has always been mediocre in the paint. He fumbles passes constantly and is terrible at free throws. He only averages a double double because he will grab 10 rebounds and get 10 points over the course of an entire game. When KAT was in MN, having Rudy around allowed KAT to not have to perform double duty by defending the paint and midrange, which is the reason Rudy got the defensive player of the year award. He was not relied upon to score. Just block shots and grab rebounds was all he needed to do. This allowed KAT the freedom to be able to shoot 3's all game which he just loves to do anyway. Plus the Wolves had Naz Reid who is like a 6th man low budget version of Karl Anthony Towns. So whenever they did need to score in the paint at a serious clip, KAT could switch to the 5 and NAZ and Rudy would take turns at the 4 playing pure defense. Now that KAT is gone though, the Timberwolves are going to lose not only his 50% from 3 shooting, but someone that could act as that starting center who was a consistent low post threat on offense. If Rudy Gobert is going to remain on the Timberwolves, they need a starting center that can average 20 points fulltime. Naz Reid should be the starting 5 and Rudy Gobert should be the 6th man. This means however that when Rudy is in the game, the team is not going to be able to get consistent low post scoring anymore. I still can't believe they gave him the $110 million dollar contract extension. They should have been looking to move him for a big with better stats. If the Timberwolves had say Jarrett Allen from Cleveland or better yet Ivica Zubac from the Clippers they would be in a much better position because both of those guys are better than Rudy Gobert by a lot.
