It will be a great investment in the long run. I made some similar equipment some years back to effectively carry out a snatch and tow recovery off high speed roads to an area of safety whereby the wrecker can be properly rigged. I originally saw the idea on an ex WW2 recovery unit pulling tanks out of the battlefield. Great channel keep the videos coming !

Sir Micheal !!! Yupper !!! Training your Dispatch Crew to ask if the Towed unit has a ""RABBIT/MOOSE /CATTLE GUARD on the bumper would be 1st Question asked as when YOUR UNIT got to the scene & found this issue ,,then you would have to call out another wrecker to handle the wreck ??? ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!!!
@TheByard4 жыл бұрын
This kit would just be another part of each wreckers tool chest, it would not mean a dedicated wrecker. Back in the day my brother operated a camera car and action vehicle company for film units. They could remove the old fashioned chrome bumpers and install an A frame for towing this maintained a set distance for the camera man. The towing camera car of choice was the Citroen Safari with a diverted exhaust top prevent the camera guy getting gassed. He also had trailer with fold down camera decks for through the door shots. Now all this stuff has been replaced with small GoPros stuck on anywhere.

However his point is valid to an extent. The new freight liners if you can’t drive the truck up onto blocks you can’t get the front axle with a dtu you need to extend out the boom and lift from the tow pins to clear the oil pan

@grumpystruckshop38074 жыл бұрын
We have that kit in uk, calledVDZ, problem with flat towing is wrecker rear end feels unstable and follows the heavier truck thats on tow, drifting from side to side.

System like this you can also one of the cheaper 5th wheel wrecker units(EZTOW, towyourown, etc) as long as you have a bar the right length

Wow--otally kool! I'd still have to use it a few times to feel confident about it--buit that is a game changer. Wonder how it will work with these trucks with all those 'cow-catcher' bumpers? Still very nice! Bad part--each manufacturer is going to be a different hook p.

Does the tow lift have/need a "float" position for flat towing?
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
Philip Housel you do not use a float position, you put lift pressure on the unit, when we load it it increases our suspension bu 10psi. You will need to make sure the wheel lift is extended far enough that it will pivot

I seen this system hands at a function in NJ several months ago Expensive it is and we run like 25 heavies at my place The other issue is the majority of the over the road tractors have those POS cattle catcher bumpers What are you going to do with the bumper 3:00 am in the morning There is enough stuff we have to deal with now find a place to put the cattle bumper We decided not something for us Good luck with it be safe out there
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
mdrailroad I hear what your saying, that will fall into the training of your dispatcher. The question needs to be asked by the dispatcher so the driver is informed. I know that can be a battle but remember you are all on the same team and should train together. Dispatchers can only be as good as their training.
@mdrailroad16884 жыл бұрын
@@michaelseverson9809 The dispatch part is the minor issue Getting paid to remove and now haul a possible bumper is a bigger issue When I spoke to the guy that sells those mechanisms His answer about the bumpers was Just strap the bumper to to your truck or on the back of the disable tractor Or put it in the trailer Yeah Right ! Sounds easy until it's you out there Now it 's going to be two guy two trucks taking longer along side the roadway removing a PITA bumper & assembling that new mechanism Hoping not to get run over in doing so Tows now will need to be twice the amount now if a truck has a PITA bumper Good luck getting paid it's hard enough now to get paid With all the difficulties now that come along with towing Be Safe Out There !

I know a guy that would hang that by the cables and hope for the best. He would think that apparatus is so stupid only because he didn’t come up with the idea on his own. Me: you gonna pull the driveline? Him: nah, we’re only going a few(10) miles. He would prefer to tow that backwards, So he can let the diffs hang from their shock absorbers.

This equipment has been used here in Europe for years it’s a great piece of kit but we don’t have bull bars on the front of our trucks as a rule unlike you over there and then I don’t understand why because like in Australia they need one because of the wildlife on the roads running wild and you don’t see many large wild animals loose over there
@RjIONAz4 жыл бұрын
US have many White Tail, Mule, and other Deer, Moose, Antelope, Elk, Bison, Bear, and more. So I Imagine that's why you see bull bars in the US & Canada.
@TheSwampdoggydog4 жыл бұрын
RjKeenan moose and the such are up north not many in the lower states and the herds of wild buffalo have been slaughtered by hunters and the such so not many wild buffalo wandering around the interstates. Deer are everywhere and cause great damage but the chances of hitting one compared to the amount of times your truck will need towing doesn’t warrant a bull bar in my opinion which means squat
@RjIONAz4 жыл бұрын
@@TheSwampdoggydog in fact we have wild horses and large Elk in Arizona, and they have been known to cross the road, and find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are enough critters that get on the road that can take out a truck. We have plenty of sings with flashing amber lights reminding you to "Watch for Elk". Damn and people think Arizona is nothing but desert. Bull bar I never had one, never wanted one because the heavy Holmes push bumper seemed much better.
@RjIONAz4 жыл бұрын
Darn I forgot the road from Maricopa to Gila is called "Dead Cow Road". We have a lot of open range in this state and others that the large animal know as cows are grazed on, and yep we have signs reminding people that cows wander onto the road way.

I am no engineer but I am pretty sure that is not a recommend lifting point for trucks. Those are supposed to be for pulling not lifting. If you have an under reach why do it this way in the first place? Pickup by the steer axle. I'd rather have an overweight fine and be safe than lose the damn truck going down the road.

So you couldn't tow a rig loaded with wet bales of stable straw. I've started out at 80,000. But, ended up around 120,000 after it got wet. Because you can't tarp those loads.

Sorry but I think those are unsafe and put the tractor over weight on the rear axles. Yea I know you probably have a 160 k plate on the tractor but that's what it can pull. You have 2 axles supporting the majority of the weight with some going to the front. What's the sense in buying a REAL wrecker if these things are doing the job just as well. Sorry I just don't see these as being safe exspecialy the hook up you guy's show here. I would never trust that. Nice video guy's stay safe out there.
@michaelseverson98094 жыл бұрын
Dan Dunning hello, I am assuming you are referring to the detachable tow unit. This is a Holmes DTU it is attached to the road tractor by the 5th wheel plate as well as the frame rails forward of the plate. The rest of the unit is based on the Miller 7035 wheel lift. We chose this unit because of the way it attaches to the frame as well as the plate. We also run leveling valves on both axles and maintain a maximum of 2k difference in weight between the axles when loaded. This took quite a bit of testing, but with this towing system we relieve pressure from the axles as well as the pivot pin on the wheel lift to prolong its life. We also have a lower operating cost as we will not have to send our larger heavies on the longer hauls. Thank you for you comment and have a great weekend.
