I was there the day this was broadcast. I was visiting with a group taking a Royal School of Church Music course.

My first term as a chorister at St Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle started in September 1959. The first piece of music I remember singing as a chorister was Sir Wm Harris' then-new anthem - "Strengthen ye the weak hands" - conducted by the composer, then choirmaster. The music had not then been printed, and we sang it from roneoed sheets, in the composer's handwriting. It's a great piece and I remember particularly the opening tenor solo. Harris was organist and choirmaster at S Georges until 1962, when he retired, and gave way to Sidney Campbell, from Canterbury Cathedral - an even more brilliant organist than Harris, although not such a good composer (IMO).

The way the services opens is emphatic! Alleluia! Then the wonderful responses and psalm settings. The beauty just keeps increasing until the very end. I'm working my way through your archive but it will take me some time because services like this one are listened to again and again, and rightly so :) Thank you for all your hard work!

I too will listen to this over and over. I recently sang the last anthem with my choir, and was searching for a recording and found this superb recording enclosed in this absolutely beautiful service, what a gift!

The Lloyd responses were never sung at New College, Oxford, when I was a lay clerk there. I think they are wonderful.

Jeremy Munro They still aren't, unfortunately! We might have to suggest them...

@TheSauce Group Just habit, I think - and not having the copies in the music library! Given how many traditional sets of responses there are, it's no surprise that it's difficult to fit in new or different sets when each set might be sung for a whole week at a time.
