BBC interview with Liverpool former goalkeeper Tommy Lawrence before the Merseyside derby without knowing he actually played for Liverpool for 14 years. Priceless.

What a great interview. Tommy Lawrence played more than 300 matches for Liverpool as goalkeeper. But it was at a time when footballers didn’t earn anywhere near the money that they do now. After he retired from a goalkeeper he had to go and work in a metal wire factory to actually afford his retirement. And that was despite the fact that Liverpool finished in the top 5 of UK football clubs pretty much every year that he played for them. RIP

Although I don’t follow football , I see the wonderful love the man has for his sport . It’s as if the years slip away , and he beams with the joy of his memories . It’s moments that should remind everybody , that when you see an old person struggling in the street , or on a bus , that they too ,were young once , loved and lost , ran and laughed without any cares . And have stories to tell , and lessons to share . And we should never dismiss them , or treat them with contempt or cruelty. Because soon they will be gone , and we will be them . With our own wisdom, our own stories , and our own frailties, simply following the path of life , that so many before have trodden .

@grizcuz6 жыл бұрын
Football is great. But the way the money men and business people have taken it away from the people who created and developed it isn't. People like Shankly, Clough, Busby and Stein wouldn't agree with the price of tickets and how TV decides when games are played for starters. They'd also question when kids can't afford to go to Prem League games, then where will the next generation of supporters come from? And why the English game has so many foreign mangers and players and why homegrown players, coaches and managers are so thin on the ground? There may be millions of Liverpool/Man Utd 'fans' across the world, but they've zero connection to these clubs and will chop and change their affiliation depending on success. The reason that the Premier League was/is so popular was because of the atmosphere generated by the fans, they're going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg with the likes of the £90 tickets it was going to cost me to take my nephew to to the MUFC v Saints game over Xmas. I'm not a Man Utd fan, I've a season ticket for a League One club. But I've a family connection to Manchester and have been going to Old Trafford for the odd game since I was 7. In the mid 80's when I was a kid. I could queue to get into the K Stand opposite the Stretford End and it would cost me £2.50 and my cousin £5 to get in. Even in the 90's when a local lad signed for Man Utd, he was getting us tickets for Champs League games and I saw Beckham make his European debut and score against Galatasary for £20. So we've gone from a fiver in 1987, to £20 in the 90's to approaching £100 in 2018! This isn't about income streams, they could afford to charge a tenner and still make billions in profits every year. This is about attempting to ensure only a certain type of person attends games, the middle and upper classes. They've removed the working class from the game, they've stolen the game from the people that built these clubs. Just like they've stolen public transport, electricity and gas generation and are attempting to steal the NHS and the emergency services. That's why I'm: AGAINST MODERN FOOTBALL! It's obviously political, if you're a working class person and you aren't fucking angry about what's happening to the normal people across this country, then you aren't paying enough attention! Don't subscribe to Sky,Virgin or BT sports, spend that money on watching your local, lower league club. And for fuck's sake, don't vote Tory and let's get Jezza Corbyn into number 10 ASAP!

I remember Tommy Lawerence so well back when I was a young boy in the late 60s. I can see him now back when he was in his prime . My friend and me used to practice taking imaginary goal kicks to see if the other person could guess which keeper we were copying as most goalies then had their own distinctive styles . We would always guess correctly when one of us was trying to imitate Tommy . I always remember that his shorts seemed to be a bit too tight for him at times which stood out because he was quite thick set up top and wore that big bulky green jersey , which I knew was green from my picture cards. The tv was of course only black and white in those days . A very good and reliable keeper though as I recall . God Bless him .

I remember him at White Heart Lane in the sixties Spurs v Liverpool. . . . . Unfortunately I have ended up as a Crystal Palace fan 😵💫
@choppy2492 жыл бұрын
@@TomClarkSouthLondon That’s a coincidence as I was a young Westham fan at the time and remember Tommy in goal for Liverpool when we played them but then my family moved across London to Tottenham and so I used to watch them play at White Hart Lane as you did and saw him in goal there too . It was only 2 schillings for me to get in but then went up to 12p and then 15p when decilimisation came in . Still cheap though as that was the same price as my school dinner money so I would go without my school dinner to see a couple of Spurs games each week . Funnily enough that was about the same time that Jimmy Greaves and Martin Peters swopped clubs between Westham and Spurs . I have always wondered why Crystal Palace play Dave Clark at their ground when he was a Tottenham lad and his music was known as the Tottenham sound back then . In fact he went to my school , the Belmont school in Tottenham , but about 14 years before me . We used to see his name carved into the desks as lots of girls fancied him and would write or carve , I love Dave Clark onto the wood . Funny how these things come back to you after all these years . I used to love it back then . So many wonderful , sportsmanlike footballers about , just like Tommy Lawerence that you could look up to , with good reason .

The respect for the game and the opponents was more important than the rivalry, at least in the aftermath. Besides, there was a lot more mutual respect between Liverpool and Everton back in the days. Things have been going downhill for many years now, unfortunately.
@fisherpeter6954 ай бұрын
Too true. Those fans who saw both teams in the1960s seemed to respect each other than in later years, despite the intense rivalry. The Scottish contingent at both clubs often mentioned their golf days. Even as an Everton fan I recall attending Anfield in the early 60s courtesy of complimentary tickets from a relative who worked for Liverpool Corporation, and emptied the bins at both grounds and were given tickets by the club. I saw Doug Rudham, Bert Slater and Jim Furnell who preceded Tommy Lawrence between the sticks. Tommy, like Ron Yeats, and Ian St John all left Liverpool not long after an unexpected defeat to Watford in the FA Cup in 1970
