We actually can't hear it through the video, but when this piece is performed the trumpets are placed all around the theater, at every single corner. You can literally hear the sound coming from everywhere. As the music is escalating you feel like something glorious and disastrous is surrounding you. Great addition from the composer

Saludos

‘Dies Irae’ (literally, Day of Wrath) is a medieval Latin poem, and one of the most famous melodies of the Gregorian Chant. In its original form, it’s a four-note melody describing Judgment Day, the Christian day when humanity will come before God to receive judgment. The song was composed by Verdi, an Italian composer. The lyrics are in Latin Lyrics: Dies iræ, dies illa Dies iræ, dies illa Solvet sæclum in favilla Teste David cum Sibylla Quantus tremor est futurus Quando iudex est venturus Cuncta stricte discussurus Dies iræ, dies illa Dies iræ, dies illa Solvet sæclum in favilla Teste David cum Sibylla Quantus tremor est futurus Quando iudex est venturus Cuncta stricte discussurus Quantus tremor est futurus Dies iræ, dies illa Dies iræ, dies illa Quantus tremor est futurus Dies iræ, dies illa Dies iræ, dies illa Quantus tremor est futurus Quantus tremor est futurus Quando iudex est venturus Cuncta stricte discussurus Cuncta stricte (cuncta stricte) Stricte discussurus Cuncta stricte (cuncta stricte) Stricte discussurus The English translation is: The day of wrath, that day Will break up the world into ash As testified by David and the Sybil The day of wrath, the day of wrath, that day Will break up the world into ash The day of wrath, that day Will break up the world into ash As testified by David and the Sybil. The day of wrath, the day of wrath, that day Will break up the world into ash Will break up the world into ash As testified by David and the Sybil The day of wrath, the day of wrath, the day of wrath How much trembling there will be When the judge comes And strictly examines all things

Imagine you’re standing alone atop a tall rock on a ragged solitary beach. The worst sea storm imaginable is thrashing the waves against the shore and rocks you stand upon as thunder and rain pelts against your body and face. But then, an unknown force compels you to raise your arms up and hold your open hands above you head as if preparing to hold up the sky itself. As you do, two great streaks of lighting crack down and strike into your palms, yet you feel nothing but invigoration. The streaks of energy don’t stop as the sparks pool in your palms and a hurricane of wind and water begins to swirl around you as you feel the storm and sea bending to your will. And in that moment, lighting charging through your veins and salty spray blinding your eyes, you laugh so hard and manically you frighten yourself. Yet you enjoy it, and carry on anyway. That’s this song. That’s the feeling.

It's the antiphonal offstage trumpets at 3:30 that seem to add another dimension, as if one is needed! Brass section are epic in this performance. Fond memories of playing this 25 odd years ago with the soprano soloist who had a strange technique of wobbling her head for extra vibrato. Had us in stitches.

Just saw this last night at the Kennedy Center and it is an incredible spectacle to experience. The echoing reverberations of the choir and orchestra add to the sudden jarring crescendo of the chorus, and I honestly could start to actually feel a bit of what Verdi was trying to achieve in his lyrics.
