4.35 MW transmitters switched on at reduced power, FM transmitters switched on with test tone, 4.45 MW transmitter power increase, 4.50 test tone potted out with beeps, 4.55 jingle montage to on air at 5am

anthony perkins Yes I remember that, I wondered what all the intermittent beeps were for following the test tone

Brings back so many memories. I can only imagine the vibe in the R1 studio back then as the final 10 seconds kicked in 👌🏻

These are proper radio jingles, not like the spoken rubbish we get nowadays

Yay me to, You just totally new that was what it was inspired from, even if the chord sequence was a bit weird but still really nice

Never heard them play that one to be honest, maybe they did but not at times I was listening. Great cut though.

@@paulsimpson6899 This is the daily opening jingle montage that would open the station every morning in 1990 five minutes before the radio station starts the day's programmes.

Great what changing a few notes in the tune so that like in the words of an Austin Powers movie "Oh, it sounds like Footloose", "But due to copyright reasons, it isn't!" 🤣😉

Radio 1 used to officially start at 5am I think. But at 4:45am after a bunch of test beeps they used to play 15 minutes of jingles. It felt like the entire collection of jingles they used. Is this what this video is? I’d love to know why they did that. It seemed an odd thing to do every single morning. Not many people up at that time but as a 10 year old kid i remember discovering this when I couldn’t sleep and would listen on my headphones.

The opening R1 jingle montage was actually played at 4.55 am not 4.45 am. At 4.45 the MW transmitters would have their power increased with the 440 Hz test tone (the FM tx's would already be on full power with the test tone from 4.35am) and at 4.50 the test tone would be potted out to short beeps on AM and FM for 5 minutes before the R1 jingle montage would be started.

I used to get up specifically to hear the jingles run. Back then the jingles were on tape cartridges; so I think the idea was to test the carts were working.
