There is no way that the BBC will accept a commercial model - they know full well that they would not be able to survive on it. Take Netflix for example, very popular with about 16 million subscriptions, paying on average around £10 per month - that’s £1.9 billion, or around half of what the BBC currently gets. And there is no way that BBC would be as popular as Netflix and no way would they be able to charge £10 per month. So as a subscription service the BBC would expect to get less than a quarter of what they get now. And before anyone says that they could sell outside the UK, they already do that, so we really need to consider the UK situation.

I think the main problem is that 'back in the day', you needed a TV license to own or operate equipment capable of receiving broadcast signals. When the need to have a license to have or use the equipment was done away with, so no license was needed to own or operate a TV (or radio), the BBC have just carried it on. That's how they get away with it.

In order to save themselves, the BBC seem only to have one play left open to them : To put the licence onto taxation, probably income tax. Unfortunately, it will be the spend spend spend Labour Party making the decision. The more households abandoning the BBC before 2027 the better. Here is a question to ask the British Biasd Corporation ChilliJonCarne under the FOI - Which programmes are commissioned by the BBC (Not BBC studios or any BBC subsidiary companies) that are paid for by the TV licence fee? How many of those programmes are paid for by the TV licence fee and then sold to other broadcasters, the revenue generated from those sales where does the money go. Which part of the BBC does the money go to from those sales which was originally paid for by the TV licence fee. For the sake of transparency who gains the most out of programmes paid for by the TV licence fee? BTW I cancelled my TV licence fee many years ago.
