Haitian and Mauritian Creole have similarities and differences. We met a Haitian when I was in school in Mauritius and I was so excited that another country speak our Creole but when I spoke with a Haitian on another occasion over the internet.. We started arguing that the other was speaking Creole wrong ( we were kids at the time and didn't know any better). Last time I was in Miami with my family, the taxi driver was smiling when we were saying "how much should we tip?" in creole and turns out he was from Haiti and could understand most of the Mauritian Creole that we spoke. In the end, it's cool that the two Creoles can sound similar with some variances. I didn't know creole on Reunion Island was different until I heard them speak it too.

This island should be respectful of its natural beauty and not damage the environment. The anecdote at the 3:33 mark is a commonly spread distortion of historic fact: According to the research of Dr. Kurt Barnes and Dr. Anneloes Smitman Phd (Maastricht), there is an important misunderstanding through manipulated and romanticised folklore. In 1850 (15 years after the abolition of slavery) the Marooners are reported to have been ‘hunted’ by the Franco-Mauritian estate owners and were offered a horrific "choice" of suicide by jumping or being torture to death. Hence, the historic mistruth is that after the declaration of the abolition of slavery, the British eventually climbed the Morne to inform the Marooners of their freedom, who assumed that they were being hunted and jumped to their deaths.
