One of the reasons why Coupling works so well is that everyone can sort of identify with _all_ characters. And that's because each character was designed to represent a specific aspect of every man and woman: Jeff and Sally represent the inner monologue (neurotic, insecure, constantly afraid of saying the wrong thing, etc.). They're the part you're afraid other people will see. Patrick and Jane represent how everyone _wants_ to be (effortlessly sexy, confident, and not giving a toss about what anyone else might think). Steve and Susan (who, BTW, are named after the writer and producer) represent the "civilised" image we try to present to others, while struggling with the previous two aspects.

I agree, to a point. But, the Beeb probably see the ‘writing on the wall’ in terms of reductions in Gov’t funding - they’re just trying to bolster their coffers as best they can. Can’t say I blame ‘em. It explained Moffat’s recent ‘Dr Who’ deal with Disney, too, I believe. Besides, whilst I acknowledge the licence fee is a bit archaic in this day & age AND too expensive for many, Auntie DOES still knock out some top quality shit, not to mention radio (lots and lots of radio), sports coverage, outside broadcasts (remember ‘Live Aid’, in ‘85? It was bloody well done), the World Service, shipping forecasts, iPlayer, etc, etc. Who doesn’t love a bit of vintage ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’ or classic ‘Attenborough’ after a few beers! eh!😉✌️
