For those who are curious, the two species of animals featured here are a boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) and an arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos). This scene takes place in northern Canada, specifically, in a large region called the Barren Grounds or also, the Barren Lands.

I remember the first time I saw this and I was in awe of the calfs stamina and will to live. The calf had heart. Reminds you to NEVER GIVE UP. NOT DEAD, CANT QUIT! WE'RE ALL GONNA MAKE IT BOYS!!

I agree. The Arctic Fox is actually smaller & 20x cuter than the Arctic Wolf. It also eats small mammals, eggs, insects, berries, birds, etc.

Man, Hans Zimmer really did elevate season 2 to new heights. I love most of these documentaries, but this one is memorable, inspiring, and most captivating. I think the main score and the music during special scenes play a major role.

I remember watching so many of these documentaries and I was always proud of the wolves catching the herbivore. I watched these for hours as a smaller kid.

Let alone a lone wolf. News like to use that term to describe... Well you know. In reality, lone wolves don't survive long in the wild because wolves work better in a pack. Even in packs wolves hunting success rate is only like 30%...

But herbivore is hunted literally as soon as they breath the air. Predators usually hid their newborns so well, but herbivores usually born in an open space and gotta followed it's mom or being a snack.

The Title suggests foxes, they'd never take on prey that big. My little tabby chases them out of the yard constantly. Wolves, on the other hand.

I was impressed, I didn’t think foxes were big enough to take on caribou (even calves). Then the video started and the world fell back into place with wolves hunting caribou. Edit: when this comment was made, the KZbin title incorrectly identified the canid as a fox. Attenborough had it right the whole time, but their KZbin team goofed on the title with “Arctic fox hunts caribou calf”. I am happy they corrected it.

The wolf is faster but the calf has stamina? Somebody should have explained what stamina is to Attenborough. The calf has endurance the wolf has stamina. Stamina is your maxing yourself out like sprinting for as long as you can, endurance is your jogging like putting medium or low effort for as long as you can.

I saw Never Cry Wolf on the big screen decades ago, and it caught the whole Canadian barren lands and the issues with ungulate migrations and whether the wolf was such a horror. Another horror was watching the star eating lemming kabobs to prove they were a complete meal, for both man and wolf!! (lots of them, so no shortage expected real soon).

That's not an artic fox. It's a wolf in the thumbnail, a wolf in the footage. It's even referred to as a wolf in the video. BBC Earth you're supposed to know your stuff. You have almost 10M subscribers. Do try and get the simple stuff right.
