Following the death of the former President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, another chance to watch Nik Gowing’s 1997 interview recorded in Harare for HARDtalk. Seventeen years after the country’s independence from Britain was Mugabe’s grip on power too strong?

Wrong. Robert Mugabe confiscated the whites' farm and gave it to the ZANU party. If Mugabe wanted to do some charity for the people, he would have allowed the white people to go about their business, as what he did was bankrupt an ENTIRE COUNTRY, including the Hyperinflation that practically eroded the value of the currency and the purchasing power of the population, apart from the corruption that drastically increased during his government. To support and praise the Mugabe government is to be as genocidal as the government itself was!!!

Come to Zimbabwe and see the shit he left our country in. People don't eat smartness or articulation, they need proper governance, progress and peace. Democracy is something Zimbabwe don't have and have not had.

@sydraps there is a price to pay to be really free. Zimbabwe is going to be one of the truly free countries in Africa. It is a complex situation. History can explain it better. Mugabe was not perfect, he had many faults but he put Zimbabwe in a situation where you can be truly free of the colonists. Most of Africa is still colonized, believe you me.

And the British & CIA were concerned that if Zim thrived, which it easily would have done, it would be a template for South Africa doing a Zimbabwe on steroids, followed by Kenya, Namibia (germans), etc... until Francophone Africa... Then Africa would eventually realise the trick of "divide and rule" played by the west and begin to rise. 2 years later, the MDC was funded by the British government to protect British and colonial land interests. 14 years later, Qadaffi who took a similar line to Mugabe on pan-African strength was assassinated.... its the European playbook. Only the British are allowed to do an economic / geopolitical Brexit... Blacks in Africa... no way!!! The European Oligarchies will never allow a black nation to rise above its station. The narrative that Mugabe is responsible for everything like some evil genius who spent 40 years in exile, in jails ,in the bush, dodging bombs and bullets and mail parcels, only because his whole aim in life for another 20 years after independence was to go and grab power and impoverish his black countrymen for whom he sacrificed his entire life for their liberty... that narrative, that idea... is colonial propaganda and definitely for the birds....

W M Zimbabwe went to shit because of sanctions. Europe had long decided since Mugabe stopped doing what they wanted him to do and that they were no longer in charge, they would slap sanctions on the country and hinder its growth. The European nations have always held true to the narrative that they had to be running the African continent in order for the countries to maintain a decent standing. History proves that Europe has always saw Africa as savages that needed to be civilized. This way when things go bad, they can try and spin the truth to make themselves seem justified in whatever they do. Is Mugabe innocent? No not by a long shot-but to place all the blame on him when he was put in power via western Leaders, who had been pulling the strings and controlling policy in those regions since forever, is lunacy at best.

@@tell-it-like-it-is Its a tragedy that Africans have such low expectations for it's leaders. It's a tragedy that African chiefs and their soldiers spent hundreds of years marching slaves - fellow Africans - from the hinterlands, in chains, to the coast, to sell to the europeans, in the millions. It's a tragedy that Africans did this to fellow African's in the millions. Now it's a tragedy that African's defend Mugabe, call him an icon of liberation, when all he did was follow in the footsteps of previous African slave holders, and slave sellers, treating 'his' people as nothing more than cattle. If you can't face up to that reality then just consider these questions. 1. Did Mugabe admit to the killings of thousands of Ndebele people in the 1980's, and call it a moment of madness? 2. Did Mugabe and his family take what was not his, enrich himself while Zimbabweans staved? 3. Did Mugabe give the stolen farmlands to his cronies, who knew nothing about farming, and no desire to actually farm commercially, causing the nation to go hungry? 4. Did Mugabe rig the 2008 election, murder and brutalise his opponents, and refuse to hand over power when he clearly lost? Now, if you still think all these things are the fault of western leaders - and you chose to play the blame game like so many African's do - then God help you, because you truly can't help yourself. Mugabe was a thief, a tyrant, a murderer, a lier, a plunderer, and Mugabe has utterly ruined Zimbabwe, and dragged the reputation of Africa through the dirt. Some African's may be mourning that despicable man, but the rest of the world is laughing at the idiocy of such people.

If I had my way Tony Blair and George Bush would be the first people I tried and sentenced to hanging. But when you say allowed Mugabe to live, I guess you're talking about the illuminati who control everything right, including forcing Mugabe to kill his own people, steel commercial farming land and give it to his family and leading party members who don't know how to farm; so the country's economy nosedives and people go hungry and the country experiences the worst inflation ever recorded? lmfao Your logic. Crumbled Zimbabwe economy wasn’t due to incompetent of Robert G. Mugabe. External factor and influence contributed largely to the collapse of the economy. Robert G Mugabe refused to be a puppet of other foreign countries. The land redistribution agreement abandoned became a major factor why his government was punished and strangulated. Hopefully, Zimbabweans would remember him as one of the great leaders of Africa and a liberator. Watch the same fate awaits S.A. Rest in perfect peace R. G. Mugabe

Sometimes we need wisdom to make big decisions. They could have been another way of doing than what happened. I think. Now we need to learn from this. Mugabe should have left early to kdt these other 4 generations to continue. We cant be everything. We are a team. Not to get into 70 years in office. Old age you are a victim among these young people who use IT.

Nonsense what external factors? Rhodesia was under sanctions worse than Mugabe had as a president but Rhodesia still managed to feed its people. Besides he projected so much hate for the whites and they simply pulled out in helping Zimbabwe. So he could rule like he wanted and they still get the blame for that? Always playing the victim card.

Tele Tubz You mean Rhodesia still managed to feed the white supremacist oppressors huh. World Bank figures show rampant malnutrition among the indigenous population (Red Cross study 1976 -79 - 90% of children under 5 in Rhodesia were suffering from malnutrition) Blacks were literally forced out of their land holdings into dry arid areas while the settlers grabbed the best land (Land Act) . Mugabe may have had his own weaknesses but he will be rememberd for standing up to the oppressor and giving back the most valuable inheritance to his people.
