She showed "quite happy" below the average as she meant "fairly", but we know that "quite" also means "absolutely, completely" so how do we tell the difference?

Marvellous lesson, Deat Prof. Might I trouble you for a question? Could I just use “ pretty” instead of “ really” ? And could I use quite with non-gradable adjective? You are the be-all and end-all. Love you.
@bbclearningenglish
@bbclearningenglish 5 жыл бұрын
We use ‘pretty’ like ‘quite’- they can both be used with gradable adjectives. You will sometimes hear both ‘quite’ and ‘pretty’ being used with extreme adjectives - eg. I’m quite/ pretty exhausted after that run! - but it’s used for emphasis in spoken speech, so we wouldn’t recommend you used it in writing.

@bbclearningenglish

'Thrilled' is a strong adjective so we could use all of those words to modify it. There isn't really a difference in meaning, only in style or sound. So choose your favourite!

hey SAM .Hey BBC . Thanks for the amazing video .Well, I have a question : why do we use 'quite ' sometimes to mean " completely ? obviously you used it in the video meaning " on average " . Help me please . secondly: do we use the word ' quite ' with both gradable and non-gradable adjectives , same like the word ' really' ?
@bbclearningenglish
@bbclearningenglish 5 жыл бұрын
Good questions, Alavaro82! The meaning of 'quite' depends on the words that it is used with. When we use 'quite' with gradable adjectives, it has the meaning of 'a little, moderately but not very' - it's similar to 'rather' or 'fairly'. When we use 'quite' with non-gradable adjectives, then it has the meaning of 'completely'.
