Conquistadors also brought Christianity, these people offered human sacrifice of entire defeated tribes, they also brought, horse, and education and healthcare, for every fortification built, they also established a mission, some still operate. And that's not including the "encomiendas", where the indigenous people would be put under forced labor as tribute and rewards for the conquest. And also not to mention the Asiento de Negros, which gave the Spanish monopolistic control over the African slave trade and ensured slave labor would reign in the region well into the 1800's. Yes. But we've been saying for the past 30 years that schools don't teach civics anymore, etc. But it isn't just the product of those "failed" modern schools that is so clueless. There are so many people who went to school in the 50's 60's, 70's, who think that there will be military tribunals and summary executions of civilians... and they seem to believe that is a _legal_ solution to political differences. The problem isn't the lack of education, the problem is the growing push of extremism and the failure to confront it.

I am European and clearly a social democrat. At the same time, however, I am strongly influenced by Christian communities (I even lived and worked with anglican Franciscan brothers for two years in the UK). It is so strange for me to see that this group of fanatics have completely lost sight of the fact that their country was founded on the principle of freedom - and now want to undermine religious freedom so fundamentally. Not to mention the fact that true Christians would respect and honour every other religion and approach it with open arms. Reminder: love your neighbour as yourself. Christianity trough the Catholic Church was founded on violence just like Islam. The first crusaded were launched by a man now called Saint Irenaeus in the between the year 150-200 against other Christians who did not fall under the Catholic church. Part of the dead sea scrolls are remains of those Christians that were killed which historians group as Gnostic Christians because nothing survives of any organization if they had one since they did not believe that a orthodoxy was needed to be Christians, they were peaceful and believed in meditating to escape the hell of our physical bodies. What upsets me as a Baptist (Australian) is that many of these people identify as Baptists, yet it was Baptists who spoke most strongly against theocracy in the 17th and 18th centuries, and influenced later though less radical thinkers like Locke. Even in the early 1960s, when I became a Baptist, any links between Church and State, even if it was beneficial to both parties, was treated with suspicion. Sounds like we are the same age. I too, grew up Baptist in the 1960's in Mississippi, USA. So, what do think caused this suspicion you spoke of my friend? I don't recall this happening in my area, but I will say slowly but surly, religion in general is being viewed with a certain skepticism. Our first pastor was one of the kindest, most knowledgeable and compassionate men I will ever meet. He was well loved, even today many years after his passing. And his replacement was a man who felt we needed to be scared into loving Jesus! He was quite a fear preacher and slowly but surly saw his congregation decline. What's that saying... "Hate only begets more hate, and love is the only thing that can cure hate." I paraphrase, but, I find this to be true.

Well, yes, the Puritans who arrived in America did escape England because of religious intolerance. However, the Puritans' own religious views were also highly intolerant of non-Puritans. They wanted to create a theocracy, a godly society based solely on Puritan ideas, one in which non-Puritans would be second-class citizens. The fact that they didn't get to do that in England is what they considered intolerance and made them leave for America. This is a theme one can still see in the language of the religious right in the US: when the religious don't get to discriminate people according to their faith, they call that persecution.

As a christian myself I've always thought that the American christianity is not christianity at all. Priests live in huge mansions and get a lot of money from donations, people fall down from "the power of holy spirit" even tho that's just weird exorcism, mixing politics into it way too much(to the point that they seem to use Jesus and christianity as a weapon to justify their weird destructive behaviour) etc etc etc... As a Northern European, for me christianity has always been peaceful and a spiritual journey to yourself and others involved. Trying to use it as anything else seems absolutely ridiculous and mental.

Government and religion should be two separate entities, the entities should never overtake one another. The interviewer does such a good job at showing what these people think. I personally would feel like I'm walking into the belly of the beast if I had to interview those people.

Yes, the state should not be confining the expression of religious opinion. Nor should the church implement a vatican-style church-state. Only one of those realities has begun to manifest, the former. Perhaps the old testament establishes punishments for homosexuality, but, though the spirit of the Law is still with us, the new testament offers redemption and sanctification instead. Christians in general aren't going around and putting gay people on pikes. The most severe action is denial of service, which is no offense at all, as a gay man can go to any other baker for his wedding cake, and the christian baker will be worse off (financially, anyway) for it. The whole point of belief is action, and the state should take a far more reasonable approach than it presently is.

Every government in the world is influenced by religion unless you forcefully take steps to make that not the case. That is authoritarianism, every dictatorship that has ever arisen has had to either destroy religion in that country or made a new religion around themselves. Look at Stalin, he destroyed the church in Russia and took occupied Mongolia because he feared the Buddhists and their resolve. To properly separate church and state you need to either destroy religion or destroy the state.

Christianity & or Judaism has not been pushed in the United States in this century. But schools attack our kids for these beliefs. My son was picked out & ridiculed for our faith 20 years ago in front of the class by his teacher, it only has gotten worse. I was a teacher in public schools. I was told not to represent, talk about, or wear anything that hinted at my faith. But Muslims could have their Koran out, Ramadan celebrated, prayer places on campus. We celebrated the lunar goddess & other gods from Asia etc. Class time focuses on learning about racism, how bad the US is, & how to have sex: heterosexual & homo, & learn how to masterbate yourself in lower elementary grades. Pedophilia was going on & gag orders were slapped on us teachers. We had a teacher doing sleep overs with the boys. Some were molested. Other teachers I know harassed the preteens outside of school. Paganism, humanism, new age, satanism are all allowed to be promoted to our kids in history, English lit. Etc. This is the teaching of a religion, but just not judeo Christian. I am Catholic & do not disrespect others, But we have been extremely sanctioned & threatened. Our churches have been burned, statues broken, graveyards vandalized. My daughter’s elementary Catholic school had a pipe bomb inside the city manhole tunnel. Luckily a city worker noticed the cover wasn’t in place. This was after our church was bombed.

What if your patriotism lies in the fact that your nation is the first nation to not burn the keepers of your faith at the stake? Since the crucifixion until the united states, every christian was physically persecuted in every kingdom, tribe and nation-state to which their beliefs were not sanctioned by the ruler.
