I don't see anywhere in the video where anyone was advocating for the government to establish a religion. Someone with simple answers to complex problems. Look around at other nations, and you will find this to be true. (Hungary is being held up by them as the ideal lately.) The US was a place of refuge for those fleeing religious persecution; they wanted the freedom of self-governance, and to practice their own religion. @@OhioCoastie94 God as an entity is different from God as an interpretative element in any variant of organized religion. If your argument is that the Christian God is the one and only and it’s written into the US government’s constitution (it isn’t, but OK) that impinges on others’ so-called freedom of religion. The concept of God is different and means many different things - it could be a benevolent energy, the patterns of nature, a vengeful judgmental being filled with wrath, a light, nothingness, or anything in between. Not everyone believes in God, and if they do, they don’t define God the same way. The GOP wants to define God as “the almighty father of the white Christian Jesus” and force everyone in the US to conform to that belief. That’s not going to happen, which is why we have the separation of church and state (which I’ve explained, church is different from God - we’re talking about separating organized religion from government). When the delegates met for the Constitutional Convention, Ben Franklin (a Deist) magnanimously, or being deviously clever in getting something on the record, suggested they open the proceedings with a prayer. The motion was shot down almost unanimously - with only 3 or 4 delegates in favor (out of 55 - 5% to 7% of the delegates had any interest in prayer) "the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion" - Treaty of Tripoli 1796 "Strongly guarded as is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution, the danger of encroachment by Ecclesiastic Bodies may be illustrated by precedents already furnished in its short history" - James Madison (Father of the Constitution) “The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries.” James Madison "Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise" ... “What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people.” - James Madison "... the common law existed while the Anglo-Saxons were yet pagans, at a time when they had never yet heard the name of Christ pronounced or knew that such a character existed." ... “Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.” - Thomas Jefferson “History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.” - Thomas Jefferson “We discover in the gospels a groundwork of vulgar ignorance, of things impossible, of superstition, fanaticism and fabrication .” - Thomas Jefferson "Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced an inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.” - Thomas Jefferson “The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” - Thomas Jefferson “It is too late in the day for men of sincerity to pretend they believe in the Platonic mysticisms that three are one, and one is three; and yet the one is not three, and the three are not one.” - Thomas Jefferson - - - >> “The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history. Although the detail of the formation of the American governments is at present little known or regarded either in Europe or in America, it may hereafter become an object of curiosity. It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses.” - John Adams
