This isn't a contained house fire. Its a windswept wildfire thats moving very rapidly. Stopping at a fire hydrants would be extremely dangerous for firefighters. Food for thought: property (as we all know) is valued if not in the $10's of milkiin , then certainly in the millions of dollars. However, very rarely is that price tag a reflector of the property value & more to do with the value of the actual land the property/properties sit on. Therefore, "yes" they've lost their homes. But these people still & crucially own the land. That's why many homes in the U.S. are poorly built & why people with money (often) build a home and then (after say) 10-20 years (maybe sooner), tear it down & rebuild anyway. The value of the overall property is to be found in the land, NOT the property itself. So from that point of view, don't feel too sorry for these people......

depends. Some of them is most definetly the case but there are some trees that need fire in order for the new seeds to grow, so they ignite easily for that reason. Cant remember the trees that need that or if they have them though

@@sentigosedge8510 im from the uk and most of our homes are brick but america experiences more frequent disasters and having more expensive materials that would still be destroyed is not cost effective. Plus the different types of homes are built in different areas depend on the disasters and weather etc

If that's the caae, why didn't those living close to the beach, stand outside their homes with a (powerful) hose pipe and flood/dampen the ground directly outside their homes (24/7 if needs be) to neutralized the hot embers, b!owing on the ground & towards their properties????? That's all it would have taken to save their homes.

@@joysboy6588 I live and grew up in the area, not the first time homes along Pacific Coast Highway burned to the Piers they are built on. These structures on wooden piers are made of wood, the old ones quite flimsy, easy to burn.

@nuqwestr: admittedly people that live up in the hills can't protect their homes from wildfires. But surely people that live close to the beach, whereby the front of the house is meet by road & pavement can. They've got money. If it was a community, EVERYBODY & as one whole community (working 24/7) could (quite literally) stand together with their hose pipes & JUST flood/dampen the road & pavement outside their homes to neutralized the hot embers blowing towards their homes, across the road & pavement. People in the hills can't do that. But people living close to the beach, surrounded by road & pavement outside their homes can do that in a desperate bid to save their homes.....

These are not mountains in Pacific Palisades, coastal hills, and majority of these homes were built in the fast boom of the 1950s, early 1960s, small modest and inexpensive at the time. Even a 1950s trailer home park burned down.

​@@nuqwestryeah most people have no idea these houses were extremely expensive but not really "mansions" they were mostly small homes built like 50+ years ago. Lots of retired people, business people lived here.

@@dhootparm Yep, my Dad purchased in 1958 a mid-century 1100 sg ft house up the canyon for $25K, the land alone is now worth $1.5 million. A lot of the homes are tear downs, ready for fix/flip developers.
