As a veteran of Australian bush fires, I cannot believe basic fire protection has been neglected. Every house should have had a water tank and a generator with high pressure pump to protect the home. In a crises you simply cannot rely on the govts emergency services when they are spread thin. In Australia, a tank, sprinklers and non burning materials on the outside of the home are compulsory in fire prone areas.

Their negligence, and incompetent leaders, is causing insurance rates to skyrocket, and that is why insurance companies are cancelling policies. It is their negligence that is killing innocent people. Someone needs to set these people down and put a stop to their negligence, instead of forcing U.S. taxpayers to pay for their lack of action, knowing the same thing will happen next year. The fires have destroyed L.A. because well-meaning environmentalists in California (including the Sierra Club) wanted to severely conserve water in order to protect wildlife (in this case, a tiny fish called a 'smelt') and prevented the federal wildlife department and land management from undercutting the forest more intensely to prevent these naturally forming fires from harming human communities. It IS the governors fault. The fire men have no water to fight the fires, they are just standing there watching thousands of houses burn. I'm a liberal all my life but THIS cannot go unanswered, it is 100% the fault of our leadership!!

There has been no rain for months. Clearing the undergrowth of tens of thousands of acres is simply impossible. 17 million dollars does not create water. No personnel were cut. Even had that 17 million dollars not be cut, what it have done? That is 2%..TWO per cent...of the total budget for fire fighting. All you and everyone focussing on that 17 million is playing hindsight, and worse, pretending you know that the 17 million woul have prevented this disaster. Even playing your game of numbers. Let's say 2% of the homes (out of the rough current count of 10,000 destroyed) would have not been destroyed. That's lucky for those particularly homeowners but that still leaves 9800 homes destroyed. But I hope you can at least understand that there isn't a one to one relationship between a budget number and a disaster, let alone one caused by an unprecedented situation (no rain, extraordinarilay high winds). The fire budget could have been $17 million MORE and it still would have happened.
