The Hindu priests countering hate | Reflections on being Hindu | BBC News India

In 2021, a Dharam Sansad (religious conference) was organised in the holy city of Haridwar, where several religious leaders openly called for violence against Muslims. These leaders were arrested and later released on bail. We travelled to this holy city to meet a small group of Hindu priests who are trying to counter this hateful narrative and raise awareness around how politics is being peddled in the guise of religion.
This is the first episode of our series - Reflections on being Hindu
As India completes a decade of being governed by a Hindu nationalist party, the idea of a monolithic Hindu identity and a uniform way of practicing Hinduism has gained currency. The BBC's Divya Arya and Prem Boominathan travelled across the country to capture these diverse experiences.

Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma advocates the path of least harm - this means avoiding the use of violence as much as possible but does not always equate to the path of non-violence. So, for any given problem or crisis one needs to assess the situation carefully and act in a way which leads to the least amount of harm for society. This point should also have been made by the Pandit. For example, if someone invades your country, kills civilians, destroys temples, occupies your territory etc then the path of least harm is to use violence to try and stop them. In fact, this is how all societies have functioned and survived throughout history. Of course, non-violence and diplomacy are important and violence should only be used as a last resort. This is why in the Mahabharat Lord Krishna tried all diplomatic means to avert a war between the Pandavas and Kauravas before exhorting Arjuna to fight on the battlefield to uphold Dharma. However, the unfortunate fact is that non-violence does not work against the most brutal of invaders or the most brutal of attacks against Hinduism/Sanatan Dharma. Of course, spreading hatred against people of other religions simply for the sake of spreading hatred goes against the very principles of Hinduism/Sanatan Dharma and must be avoided and condemned as the Pandit correctly stated. The problem with the BBC is that they not go to neighbouring Muslim majority countries and ask similar questions there. For example, they do not go to Pakistan to find out what their school textbooks say about Hindus. They do not interview Hindu refugees from Pakistan nor do they do any research to find out why the Hindu population of Bangladesh has decreased from 22% in 1951 to less than 8% today. This is because the BBC do not report news impartially but report news to an agenda. Of course reporting news to an agenda is not 'top-quality' journalism but low quality journalism.
