In a world obsessed with clean, decluttered spaces, some people still find beauty in an overstuffed apartment.
Live a better version of yourself with more stuff, or less? A maximalist and a minimalist, by showing us their lifestyle in extremes, confront each other on the relationship between belongings and happiness. Is there a middle road for living authentically?

Agreed. Some people think minimalism means having nothing around them and a sterile environment, which if they like, it’s cool, but it’s not actually minimalism, or it is taken to the max. I’m a minimalist, but I need some color and enrichment in my life. Staring at all the white would make me feel like living in a hospital at all times. No, thanks.

I agree, however I do not condone with his view that a minimalist interior is neither gay nor fun, or that a maximalist decor is inherently interesting and fun. Both can be. Both can fail to be. I’ve lived in a jewel box (as he says) for quite some time, now I aspire to a more peaceful / zen / appeasing environment. Exactly the point. To some people, an empty room is what they need and who they are, and to others they prefer character and busyness. It was never about clutter (contrary to what people connect minimalism to). You can have many items you love and still find meaning in every single thing.

My late grandmother’s house was almost just Iike the maximalist’s - she had a good bit of money and was able to travel a lot so she had decorations and books from all over the world. We all had a distant relationship with her, and the few times we could visit her, it was like you were stepping into a whole new world almost. Sadly, when she died, that world died with her when it was time to divide her stuff & greedy relatives came & razed the place and fought over the house...it was a big mess for awhile. If anyone wants to be a maximalist, I say go for it if you like it - just remember that your stuff does not go with you when you die. Focus on your relationships and your health more than your belongings. Also, PLEASE write a damn will!
@naelacruz6533
@naelacruz6533 4 жыл бұрын
Haha I love this. People really do need to write their will early as grim as it may seem. Although the relatives may not keep every single item, those of sentimental value is worth keeping and handing down through generations. When my mother passed away the trinkets she loved and kept have been ever more meaningful to me. Getting rid or donating the loved one’s belongings is normal and ordinary, but I don’t believe in mindlessly throwing things away for the sake of following the current trend of minimalism. From the mainstream videos of minimalism and rising popular opinion of ‘Mary Kondo’ or Scandinavian clean and neat modern design, most young people have followed not only the principle, but the aesthetic of white walls, near empty spaces and cupboards and to me, end up lacking the presentation of one’s personality and character. I love stepping foot into another’s home, to feel their sense of character through their preferred interior which resonates with them the most.

If you're a minimalist, your stuff doesn't go with you when you die, either. Why not enjoy your life while you have it instead of denying yourself because you can't keep your stuff after you die? BTW People still fight when there's a will. What happened was the fault of the greedy relatives and NOT the deceased. If she had a lot of money instead of lots of stuff, they still would have fought. In fact, if she had little money or stuff, they would have STILL fought over what little there was.

It might seem paradoxical, but poor people often find minimalism more difficult than wealthy people. Minimalism has a lot of hidden costs to it, like needing to obtain things that you don’t have when you need them, and dispose of them when you’re done with them. Poor people often have difficulty with this because they never know when getting rid of something will leave them in a vulnerable position later on. What if you need those old bicycle parts to repair a breakdown (because you can’t afford a new bicycle or the repair shop)? What if your clothes need patching? You know you can’t often afford new books or new games, so are you sure you want to get rid of the ones you have? For people who grew up poor, the instinct to keep things just in case can be hard to shake.

Some say "minimalism is poverty for the rich". I'm not sure if that's necessarily true, but minimalism often requires much better quality, which is not always affordable. And, as others have mentioned, if you're poor you'll probably have to keep spare items since you haven't been able to afford that good quality and since you don't know when you'll need something.

The best part is that both are two opposite paths that lead to the same result: to enjoy life. Minimalism helps you focus on yourself and experience the present moment by deviating attention from materials and stimulation, while maximalism is about focusing on yourself through self-expression and building memories and experiences through objects and visuals. Both reach the end goal of having a more wholesome life and reaching self-fulfillment.

For me minimalism means more stuff than it would for a single person who lives alone; I have a husband and two children. I have minimal personal belongings but have a normal amount of kitchen utensils for cooking and taking care of my family. I may have minimal decorations, but fully admit to owning an upstairs vacuum and a downstairs vacuum so I don’t have to haul a vacuum up and down the stairs. Heck, I even have a carpet shampooer and there is a Shop Vac in the basement for my husband’s remodeling projects!

From my observations and experiences, i can only guess that the minimalist lady in video doesnt want any more chaos in her life because she is already tired of the overwhelming feelings accompanied her till she could get to control her living style, and the maximalist gentleman doesnt want to feel alone and isolated because those feelings already broke his heart at some point in his life, so he feels better when he is surrounded by the things he appreciates and the things can stay there so long as he wishes. I'd suggest that it's the other way around. I consider myself a minimalist. Everything I own can fit inside 2 suitcases. Oh, and incidentally I own two pairs of black jeans and 2 pairs of black shoes. The rest is all different colours! I spend as little of my money on stuff as possible so that I can spend more of it on LIVING, and by that I mean experiences. I love to travel and to try new things. I'm a Brit, right now living in South Korea. In 10 months I'll be moving to another country. Although I haven't decided which yet! This guy seems to be spending huge amounts of money just filling a room with stuff. All his stuff was in shops, now it's in his house. He used to wake up and go to the the shop, look at stuff, and buy it. Now he wakes up and looks at the stuff. He's just changed the room it's in. The difference is now he is responsible for it and has paid for it, and if he ever dares move house he'll have to take it all with him. I would argue that he's building a lovely gilded coffin. When his kids ask, "hey dad, what's the most interesting thing you've ever done", there's a good chance he'll be able to answer, "I bought this vase". If he has the money to do both, then that's great, but I would certainly argue that he doesn't have the TIME to do both. Most minimalists have a reason. Their minimal lifestyles enable them to do something, write, travel, etc. Or just free up time for reading or relaxing! The captions missed the point also. "Minimalism is an art movement". Yes, it is, but that's not the type of minimalism that she or I practice. They might as well have said that Maximus is the name of the guy in Gladiator so this guy likes to fight to the death! Haha He says he would hate to live in a room with one lightbulb in the ceiling. Yeah, me too. And when it cut to her apartment you could see a standing lamp. He would hate white walls. I have a yellow bathroom and a green kitchen. He would hate to wear only black and white. Cool, yesterday for work I wore a bright orange shirt. It would be nice if they had actually talked to him about what they were asking him to criticise before asking him to do so.

There is no sense of balance or harmony, it's like she's a secret hoarder forcing herself to live this way, checking off the key boxes--off white walls, check, room divider with a lonesome vase, check, midcentury light fixture, check, monochrome wardrobe, check. The so-called maximalist had everything nicely arranged and it looked clean and well-kept. I was expecting a hoarder with shelves full of Hummel figurines and twenty years of Soap Opera Digest but though it wasn't my personal taste, his space was very liveable and obviously brings him pleasure. A few years ago I was sent some money for my birthday and bought lovely little sets of stackable wooden drawers and I could & did (& enjoyed doing) the labelling and putting my arty materials+ in them; given the right space & storage I could do it. I wonder if people who suffer from hoarding have had possessions (or people?) stolen/removed/lost in their pasts? Or were abused in various ways? Also my Granny who lived during wars kept lots of things, not a hoarder at all but waste-not-want-not & make-do (& kept family heirlooms that I now must take care of) & I think people who've lived without security/money may also do this coz you don't know when that might happen again & have no money to buy more, or, for me, really nice cotton things are so expensive now so I've kept extra bedding & tops so when mine wear out (as they have done/do) I've got others to use. I was once invited into the home of real hoarders when I was in my 20s (they lived in my street): huge piles of papers, books & mags everywhere, all up the side of stairs, partly blocking hallways - real eye-opener, but the people were SO lovely! Don't know why they did that (a couple), could've been temporary too, you never know - they mention it. Thank you.
@Call-me-Al
@Call-me-Al 4 жыл бұрын
@@jennyhughes4474 yeah, hoarding can be triggered from a wide variety of reasons, even often the death of a loved one. It's usually a very compulsive thing, people do it because they still are highly traumatized whether from a single event or just a long traumatic period. Their brain tripped into some sort of obsessive compulsive behaviour that shows itself together with the loss aversion trauma as hoarding. It isn't something they intentionally do, it is something they feel they have to do to feel safer but it is a very fleeting safety and they have to repeat the behaviour. I can't wait for psychology to get way more based in actual biology knowledge, because a lot of scientifically proven disorders that shouldn't be seen as mere moral failings are still seen as such in too many places, preventing them from actually getting proper help.

Wow, these two are each so extreme In their ways! And as others have said in this thread, KonMari does not mean all gray and beige and empty walls and echoey and simple lighting… KonMari means surrounding yourself with things that you love and allowing things that do not spark joy we do not have their place, to go. It feels like this man has done exactly that as well! Both homes feel very balanced to me, he’s almost more! I too prefer color, and pretty pieces around me, even if mine would be a bit simpler probably than his. 😉 It’s fun to see different examples! And to find your own way that feels right to you. 😍🌈💗✨

Enjoyed this video! The key thing is they both appear to be happy with their homes. That's what matters. Neither is bad unless it in some way is holding them back from thriving. Home is so personal and we all are so different. By the way, it's a misconception some people have that being tidy, uncluttered, and minimalist must look like the minimalist in this video. It can look numerous ways, even like the maximalist in this video. As long as everything is in order and serving a useful role and "sparks joy" as Mari would say. Being uncluttered is so personal and what is clutter to one person is not to another. Minimalist can be an aesthetic that often or stereotypically leans towards the spacious all-white Apple Store vibe or tiny houses or people who live entirely out of one back-pack. OR in another sense minimalist can look like even having a big home with lots of belongings or say a hobby requiring many supplies but where there is a certain thought, care, purpose, maintenance, and order about each item kept or not kept and each new item added. I adore textures and colors and art and stuff and not at all into a stark black and white, empty look, yet am very intentional about which items I have and it feels very awesome and helps my head feel clear and has great feng shui of energy flowing through easily and easier to clean. Same with my fridge and pantries and even friendships and how I use my time. It's not about scarcity or a stark feeling for me but a cozy, warm, abundant intentionality that allows breathing room and focus instead of energy scattered all over spread thin or drowning in too much noise and delayed decisions. Similar to why I like not being on Facebook or owning a TV and am intentional about what input I take in. I like uncluttering when clutter appears or helping others do the same. Very therapeutic. I like appreciating each item I have. Being sometimes homeless and very poor in the past gives me deep gratitude for each room, amenity, and item, and enjoyment of choosing and maintaining things nicely instead of taking it for granted.

I'm both of these people; when it's too cluttered I get anxious and at the same time a completely empty room makes me sad; as previously said: the key seems to be intentionalism; creating a space that makes me happy and where every item has its own purpose; even if certain things might seem trivial to one, as long as they make me happier and calmer and I use them - it works.

what I’ve observed is that minimalists usually dictate that their philosophy is the correct and ideal one, like what everybody should do. however maximalists at least admit that they adopted this philosophy not because it’s true but because that’s what they enjoy. i also agree that maximalism is waaay more convenient to express your identity and creativity (be it house decoration or fashion). and last but not least, i value and prefer “happiness, joy, beauty” over “essentiality” so I feel closer to maximalism

I absolutely adore maximalist decor when it's done well (like this man's home in this video. It's stunning!) The ability to make so many different bits and pieces fit together is admirable and it does feel like a wonderland when you step into a home like that. HOWEVER, I've been a minimalist myself for about 4 years now because I love having a clutter-free home and owning only the items that bring me joy and purpose. It's not all black and white and I have my fair share of trinkets lined up on my shelves because they make me happy. I kinda wish videos like this would bring it up more, that you can be a minimalist and not have your home all black and white, looking like you just moved in yesterday. -- If a home like that makes the woman in this video happy, all the best to her! But there isn't a set way on how to have a minimalist home. I wish that was brought up more in videos like this.

I think that minimalism is en vogue at the moment, because it's more ecological. It asks that question : what is necessary, and what is superfluous. This might lead us into economy of means, and therefore, a reduced consumption and impact on the planet. However, it is also important not to dismiss maximalism as wasteful. If carefully lived and applied, like the guy here, a great deal of attention is given to the history of things. Maximalism therfore brings you to restoration and preservation of old things, rather than buying new. History takes a step over utility, and this might actually make it more ecological when it comes to furniture (although that depends on how minimalism is lived). In short, an ecological lifestyle can actually be fed by principles of both currents.

@Amusis I think I agree with you on some aspects. However, the simple fact that minimalism is against consumerism makes it far less susceptible to mass consumption. But it's true that it is not linked to ecology, but only one of the tools it uses. Also, my comment wasn't trying to define minimalism, I know far too little about that to be in any position to do so!

It was sad to me to see her pull out a pallet bed to sleep on. She could have gotten a pull out couch, there is room for a bed, and even sleeping on the couch itself seems cozier. It seems like to make yourself a martyr, all to avoid consumerism, when throwing out perfectly good things is also a side effect of consumerism.

@@djawnsjhilson218 It's actually super cosy to sleep on the floor like that, it takes a few days getting used to but then your body adapts and it's actually comfortable. I did it for almost half a year because it helped me with my sleeping routine. I had a bad habit of going to sleep too late because I just wouldn't get sleepy. Then spending too much time in bed during the morning/day. But when you have this routine of rolling the bed out at night, it's like you get instantly tired and ready for sleeping. And when you wake up, you just roll it back up and feel energized to start the day. It worked wonders for me when I didn't have a job but wanted to be productive. And it made me clean the floors much more often haha. I still had a daybead for guests/family though, one that you can pull out to a nice comfy bed if needed. Also I have back problems and sleeping on the floor helped with that too (tips for side-sleepers: have a thick pillow for your head and a small pillow between your knees for support). Sorry for the tangent, I just thought it might be intriguing for someone out there.

About her home tho; wow it's really not cosy at all. I'm from Sweden so I'm used to a pretty minimalistic, somewhat bare-bones "Scandinavian style", but we still tend to make it cosy with blankets, candles and plants. Even her place could have been pretty decent with just the use of some plants, and still be minimalist (unless she hates taking care of plants). Studies show it's good for us to see plants in our day-to-day life (even pictures of nature can make people less sick) :) Maybe she's just genuinely happy with her home, good for her 😊

@@dantellor1024 those are good tips to maybe help someone! I found it helpful to make my room less relaxing! I changed the color scheme from blue with orange to orange with blue. Gives me a little more energy! Also, this is from a book i don't remember the name of, but it was super interesting. It went about pin pointing where in life you are having issues, based off where there were issues in your house. Some things seem common sense but are they really? Things like if you don't like your kitchen, you're less likely to cook in it, so you may be having weight issues, not eating a healthy diet, wasting money eating out, and not sticking to a budget. Also, if you are bringing work into the bedroom, you arent making room for a relationship. So like if a space is lacking, that area of your life is also in need. And also how important it is too make space for all of our needs mentally and physically and how important it is to delineate spaces. It really made a big improvement for me! I actually relaxed in the living room, slept in bed, made an area to make art, do projects

Essentially, choose a style and amount that suits the life you want to live. Don't care about the labels, labels just breeds stereoptypes and misunderstanding. For instance, I don't consider myself a minimalist, but I have let the minimalist mindset influence me and have been on a tidying/decluttering process the past 2 years now. I've essentially gotten rid of at least half my possessions. My space is way easier to tidy up, my possessions have a home, and I know I use and/or love everything I have, and whenever I notice something I no longer love or use, out it goes. Still, when my more minimalist sister visited me, her first words when she walked into my livingroom was "I thought you had gotten rid of things". I don't know what she expected, because I had gotten rid of several large bookshelves, several hundred DVDs, excess blankets, pillows, bags and bags of clothes, bunch of decor items. Not all of it from the livingroom specifically, but it was a very significant change from her last visit, yet in her mind it was way too cluttered.
