That was a great series. The rifle was cleaned and parts were replaced as they wore out though. This series focuses on how long the rifle can go with zero maintenance. Combined, the Filthy 14 and this rifle show a pretty impressive picture of BCM rifle and the DI system in general.

@@MagicPrepper A lot of people replace components just because they think they should or because the internet tells them to rather than because its actually needed. For example, people will tell you that you need to replace the springs in Glocks every so many thousand rounds. But there is a Glock 17 on display in Glock's Austrian factory with a certificate from the Hirtenberger company certifying that the gun was fired over 348,000 rounds and only had the recoil and firing pin springs replaced *once*. Eventually at 348,000 rounds of "endurance firing" the barrel cracked. The certificate on the pistol says if the barrel was replaced the gun would continue to function perfectly.

I broke the 20k round mark thru my BCM rifle with ELW - BFH, Barrel..(enhanced light weight/tapered & Hammer Forged).. The upper was purchased in 2015 and has never been "cleaned" only oil added.. And I think 3 times, I took the bcg out and wiped it with a microfiber cloth quickly.. My literal goal was to put 20k rounds thru a rifle and see if it was 100% without breaking anything.. It passed the test and is gonna keep going.. until failure of some sort.. In 20k rounds it has only had 3 malfunctions, all 3 came from the same box of ammo.. BCM rifles are a bargain for the quality of hammer your getting..

@chriscarnes87
@chriscarnes87 2 күн бұрын
It’s not bs, there is still merit behind it. It just depends on the quality of the firearm and the parts. Can a quality AR DI power through? Yes Obviously, but so will a piston and it will run longer and cleaner. That is the whole point and intention behind a piston operating system. Which is exactly why every modern rifle outside the AR-15 is piston. Just look at what’s been reintroduced and is popular now….. The AR-180 platform which is piston.

If so then why is the “DI” AR-15 platform pretty much being replaced by the AR-180 platform? Which is also designed by Eugene Stoner, and is only gaining in popularity. And in terms of popularity (meaning the vast majority of all gas operated rifles), a piston opening system is better.
@jimmyjunk3093
@jimmyjunk3093 2 күн бұрын
@@chriscarnes87 Depends on what you mean by "better." They're easier to clean and maintain, but are objectively worse in adverse environments. Same thing with the AR v. AK debate. AKs suck in mud. They get 1 shot then become bolt-action, but a DI AR will work flawlessly even when covered in mud with the dust cover open. DI ARs are lighter, more reliable in adverse conditions, but take quite a bit more work to clean, and will require cleaning more frequently which is not something easily overlooked by something like the Military Budget Committee. A piston system could go to 9200 rounds without a hitch.

@@chriscarnes87the main draw of the AR180 is the lack of a buffer
@chriscarnes87
@chriscarnes87 2 күн бұрын
@@jimmyjunk3093 I wasn’t meaning “better” in terms of best, just that it’s the more popular operating systems for gas rifles. The DI AR being a tight tolerance “sealed” system is only reliable as long as stuff doesn’t get in the action. Which will stop it in its tracks. Is it harder for things to get in? Absolutely yes….But it’s also harder to get the stuff out (without disassembling and generally flushing it out). The AK is generally the opposite depending on the situation. There is a give and take with both systems.
@jimmyjunk3093
@jimmyjunk3093 2 күн бұрын
@@chriscarnes87 I was mainly referring to the 'self-clearing/cleaning,' for the lack of a better term, effect of DI ARs. As the gasses are vented out of the bolt carrier they blast away debris from the ejection port. Piston ARs will stumble where DIs won't. Of course, as you said, there's a give and take. Don't try to shoot a DI AR underwater for example... And AKs are much more resistant to seizing up due to freezing.

Damn, I'm sure glad I safed the extra couple hundred bucks and bought BCM instead going the "budget friendly" route. BUY ONCE, CRY ONCE! Especially if your buying it as a tool to protect your family and self. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I suspect SOLGW or Geissele might also approach this type of performance, but it would be interesting. I think SOLGW using Sprinco springs throughout their rifles might give BCM a good run for the money.

The Geissele Nano Weapon BCG might be better and the Geissele Raila are definitely better but also more expensive. I'd have to say about even dollar for dollar. I'd be great to see if SOLGW achieves that level in the next 5yrs.👍🏽

Weigh it with carbon built up. Clean, then weigh again to see how much weight is pure carbon. Following this, I’d say collab with School of the American Rifle as others have stated.

But wait MAC, AR’s need more care and maintenance and magic lubricants than any other rifle in order to be reliable!

I've been following this since you started. Would love to try this on a few of my personal complete builds. This still proves that the DI system is solid and can run even dirty. I would enjoy tearing that rifle apart and giving it a full cleaning.

Something else that should be mentioned here is the point Tim switches from chambering with the bolt catch to using the cocking handle. For years, there were people that have said chambering with the cocking handle on an AR gives a bit of extra spring tension and can be useful in situations where pressing the bolt catch doesn't quite cut it. This is one of those situations: he didn't need to use the forward assist even ONCE while using the cocking handle vs the bolt catch.

In true MAC fashion, you should do your famous gauntlet test. Let's see how the AR-15 does against water, sand, dirt, and mud all at once. And other rifles for that matter. God Bless

So far, the best and most impressive long term endurance test has been the Ballistic Radio's SR-15 Mod 2 endurance. They put the rifle up to 20145 rounds in 5 months with no cleaning.

Once you hit 10k I would appreciate seeing an accuracy test, deep clean, clean accuracy test and then deciding what to do with the rifle such as replacing parts.

Saw a BCM 14 with those same exact specs. Saw it at a variation of a trade show. They showed the firing history of the weapon and also had video of all of it. Up past the nine thousand round point; never cleaned, and never oiled. One could tell by looking at it. At a later point in time they fully treated it to needed proper maintenance, and almost as good as new. My next weapon will be one of those BCM 14s

Pat Rogers used to write about a BCM they nicknamed Filthy 14. It was a loaner gun for training sessions, and was never cleaned. The difference was they kept it lubed with Slip 2000. I recall an article about it from 2012 where it had 44k rounds through it.

The M-16 I was handed when I took an ROTC class lasted two rounds before it jammed. That was just the beginning of the horror of my introduction to this weapon system. Never could I get more than two or three rounds down range before it jammed again. My illusion of the iconic American assault rifle was shattered forever. I will never trust an AR platform after that experience.
