One of the best things about these game shows from the 1970s was that nobody woulda suspected these goofy little quiz shows would get as wild as they would for daytime TV, and the world was made a richer place for it.

Paul Lynds delivery is where he excelled; I was little kid watching him and understood none of his punchlines and still laughed. now as older guy, I laugh harder knowing now his partner preference.

I love Paul Lynde as Uncle Arthur on Bewitched too

I used to watch him when I was about 13 I think. I loved him! I was too young to understand his jokes then but he was still hilarious!

Yes, his answers were scripted, but his delivery was amazing. It's just so sad that he could not be open about his sexuality. To most people, it was clear that he was gay. However, it had to be hidden and was laughed about, and he was often the brunt of jokes. Today, he would have been there with the likes of Leslie Jordan and others.....his comedy was so natural. They left out my favorite line from Hollywood Squares...."Paul, why do bikers where leather?"......"Because chiffon wrinkles." LOL

It always cracks me up when people think that the celebrities come up with these responses themselves! The jokes are part of the writing process! It's up to the celebrities to make the responses funny!

It still surprises me that he got away with it on TV. He was an excellent Actor, Comedian. He wanted to do more serious work but never really got a chance. 😢

All questions and answers on Hollywood Squares were written and rehearsed ahead of the show.

He wrote most of the jokes. Well prepared

No one has a quicker wit? You must not know that the actors in the squares were given always the questions, answers, and possible bluff answers before the show was filmed. If anyone has a quick wit, it was the show's WRITERS.

Yes, it was scripted but Who the fu**k cares, his genius is in delivery, people. He could read a phone book and have audiences in hysterics. He was so gay, like Liberace, but middle America didn't have a clue. Nobody has a delivery like Paul.

Paul Lynde's comedic timing was great on this show. However, this show provided witty responses to the stars in advance of taping. there was a documentary on this decades ago.

Spoiler alert: Paul had writers write his jokes.
@vodriscoll7 күн бұрын
They all did.

@@vodriscoll You're correct. However, none of the others were featured in this video. Furthermore, the uploader said Paul was "quick witted". He may have been but, not on this show from what I understand. In short this video was about Paul, so I kept my post to the subject matter which was Paul.

I literally could not watch the show anymore after learning the stars were provided questions and funny answers prior to taping.
@Katnip4523 күн бұрын
“Quick wit?” You do know much of those was scripted, right? They had joke writers preparing material in advance. Not that Lynde wasn’t naturally funny, but he didn’t do this alone.

Hi Brother love and respect your reactions, could you check Bryan James " I AIN'T LOST " OR Chris Jansen/ ERIC CHURCH " YOU ME and THE RIVER" TY

The jokes were written. Paul had all the punch lines ahead of time. He only needed to memorize or familiarize himself with say 4 per game. Then when the questions came to him they were specifically for him. He then only had to go over the punchlines he heard and match them up. That’s the little delay he had. He might tweek the punchline a bit and his delivery was always what made it funny, but he knew the punchlines, not the joke but he knew the punchlines

They were given the jokes ahead of time. He's not a quick wit or even that funny. The celebs were given three answers to choose from: the right answer, the wrong answer, and a joke answer. It's about acting and bluffing, not IQ and wit.
