A challenge I have is when I have to walk my dog past another dog, the other dog is flipping out, barking lunging and usually on a too long leash. Obviously the owner of other dog has little control while I am trying to employ your methods. I do use a gentle leader. Your methods have completely changed the game for me and my dog. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us more than you know. Thank you.

This is making everything a bit harder and some times out of control but you should prepare a training scenario for your dog instead of jumping in a training session whenever possible. That scenario that you have prepared is obviously consist of a calm dog as a training opponent ☺️

I have a miniature schnauzer and she does the same thing she growls at everything I know she’s still a puppy, but I socialize her and she still acts like she’s this wild crazy dog when she sees other dogs or people she starts hyperventilating and then it just escalates, and I’ve tried all of Joel‘s methods he said Sometimes we’re not doing each step. I just don’t know what I’m missing.

@@debilindsey3967 I have the exact same thoughts too, you describe my experience. I think some dogs are just naturally highly strung, I was starting to get really frustrated, but now I make a real effort to just stay chilled before I go on the walk, don't let the frustration take over, just follow all the steps and keep doing it. Its getting better for me but slowly as I think my guy is at the height of his fear period....Don't give up, keep it up and stay as cool as you can...

Building obligation is huge in recovery for a dog with these behaviors - Insist vs Resist, as long as his safety and survival is built with trust by the handler that you can handle the environment, the dog can then trust and begins the process to having them become neutral to the emotional response of seeing the stimulus. I always tell my clients: Thoughts without emotion, have no impact, while Emotions without thought, have no direction. Well done, Joel 👏

My GSD is 100% in his fear period, so hes still quite on edge, easily startled and gets way too excited when he sees other dogs, at least he doesnn't lunge at them now, he rather squirms around and whines and lets the odd little bark out....But I am now visiting a friend who has two dogs, one the same age, so that is also helping a lot.... Hi Joel, I am so impressed how fast you managed to get Griffin to stop the freak-out and make him sit ( 09:54 ). Besides the Halti/head collar the most important tool for me is a simple KNOT IN THE LEASH. It gives me something to hold on to and it marks where I need to hold it for a consistent heel. I (f, 160lbs) rehearsed a lot with my 90 lbs rescue dog (as advised in a previous video) and I am so thankful for your guidance! Today he ignored his first dog! ... and then freaked out about 3 others ... More content about leash reactivity would be great, especially about the aspect of redirecting. Standing still causes my dog to build and increase the intensity of the freak-out. Some content concerning encounters with uncontrolled off leash dogs would be great too!

@@kinsleycharest3473 Somewhat. I give him a job by making him heel. Continuing to move prevents him from hyper-focusing. For the off leash dogs, Michael Shikashio has an awesome video on defensive leash handling when the s__t hits the fan I believe the video is called. Beckman's Rottweiler named Creed video is the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity - you're not going anywhere if he can't even leave the house without being on your page. He has little dog videos too if you don't have a 110lb Rottweiler. Had an instructor who spent an entire week in her driveway walking back and forth with her Rottweiler and a cigar of string cheese hanging out of her mouth. The neighbors were even laughing at her. Guess what - they're not laughing anymore because she can take him anywhere and he never wants to leave her side. Hope that helps.

@@robinrutherfordcost4748 Thanks, I will check it out. My neighbour 4 houses down lets her 2 highly aggressive, young and completely untrained Labradors outside multiple times a day to do their business on other peoples property. Another encounter is something I need to have a plan for. Last time I stood in the middle of the road for a good 5 minutes yelling at her from the top of my lungs: “go get your dog!” on repeat 🤦‍♀ (edit to add: I pushed my dog behind me, he was not making any noises and allowed 'the help' to handle the situation) Meanwhile I have nowhere to go since there is a traffic yam of dogs behind me and I feel like retreating will get the Labrador to attack. I agree with what you said about the doorway method. I can even leave the door wide open without my dog leaving the house. The 'tragedy' is that we worked so much and his leash walking and heeling is almost perfect now, but it is all forgotten once he sees another dog. 😩 My neighbours laughed about me too when I walked up and down the street in front of our house for 2 weeks 😁 Doggo is not food or toy motivated at all. I tried redirecting and even taught him most sled dog commands just to keep him engaged and focused on performing 'the trick' and me - instead of the other dog. I don't have a yard and use every neighbourhood walk as practice. This is why I keep coming back to this channel, it keeps me motivated and one day it will work.
@robinrutherfordcost4748
@robinrutherfordcost4748 3 ай бұрын
@@BlueberryLover617 check out Susan Garrett's video on dogs that aren't food motivated. Kikopup has one on that as well. If you can practice when it's his feeding time, that might help as well. We have ordinances that if your dog is caught running loose, it's either a 1,000.00 or 3,000.00 fine. 400.00 if you get caught not picking up after them. We had one case where a kid was running away from a loose dog because they were afraid of dogs. The kid was hit and killed by a car. Wouldn't want to be anyone in that situation, but it never would have happened if the dog wasn't running loose. Sorry about your situation - that's tough, especially when it's your neighbor.

Jed, my 1st, taught me so so much and is the reason I do what I do. Recently had the pleasure of getting to know my 1st Doberman. And wow if he is typical then they are super impressive. Brave, measured, curious and confident come to mind. Dangerous in the wrong hands. The pooch in this video appears a little limpy, probably nothing but thought I'd mention it. Peace.

I often hear 2nd or 3rd time owners say: "oh, I had a dog before, I know what I am doing" while the current dog is completely leading them by the nose. Each dog reacts and answers to methods differently, you gotta start at 0 with every dog, not thinking of taking "shortcuts" ^^`

And that's after ball and tug for an hour before we even leave. It was the first time I've enjoyed and been confident out walking her in daylight. I usually walk her in the middle of nowhere after dark or before sunrise. Was it perfect? No, not as soon as we got around distractions. was it 50% better? yep and it's going to be work, but you are going to help me fix this dog so that she's not stuck in a backyard I can come out with me and my other shepherd who's balanced. For the first time ever this dog can hear me and what I want from her. No other tools have worked, not like this and I've tried them all. I am able to get this dog back in pack drive and out of prey drive. She's a lot of dog, she's rude and like I've heard you say in some of these videos I've watched over the last 24 hours "we can do this all day" All I have to say is thank you thank you thank you thank you!

How often do you consider orthopedic issues when it comes to reactivity and aggression? The dog in the video is gaiting almost every step, which is an indicator of something going on orthopedically, and some pain and discomfort. When you discover issues like these do you recommend a vet visit and pain management before any serious training or does it not matter because the dog should be acting a specific way whether they’re in pain or not?

But he's under 10 pounds, so everybody thinks it cute. I brought my stable 2yr spayed female lab and went on a walk. Had the hardest time getting the owner to let the dog walk behind ours then come up and sniff at last. My girl was chill - oh, hi, lets go walk attitude. Neighbor was SO trying to keep dog AWAY from mine, but in under 10 minutes they were mingling, facing and play-bowing...total friends!! and the neighbor was freaked by the play-bow not understanding its a good thing. Euro Dobbies tend to be "out front" healers and ours is no exception. He slack leash heels like a champ, and sits at every curb/intersection perfectly. BUT...starting around 5 months, he began lunging and barking at any dog we pass, and he gets in a 'zone' where we don't exist, and he's even lashed out at us, and has bitten us out of desperation. We can now only walk him when the coast is clear, which has minimized our opportunities to long walk, which probably adds to his frustration. What a dilema😭

Same thing happened to my when my Dobie was younger. He'd pull like crazy or try to get to another dog and I'd pull back on the leash and he'd come up on me. My arms are scarred to prove it. But he mellowed with age. He'll be 6 years old in November and doesn't try to go after other dogs (except for a Yorkie who always barks at him first) when we walk. I live in a condo complex and there's close to 30 other dogs. He's very friendly and always wants to play. But sadly, many people in the complex have the "That's a Doberman. It's going to kill my dog!" attitude and won't let their dogs play with him, even if their dog is pulling them toward us in an effort to play. There's a vid on my channel of him playing with a smaller dog if you want to see. He plays gently with the small dogs and plays rough with a couple of the dogs that are his size. He's never had a fight with any of them. Give your dog time. He will get better with age.

The purpose of sitting and stopping is not just for you to get the expected response. They have to be calm, starting from the doorway. He's said the one in this video is a dog that lashes out towards the person on the end of the leash too, despite walking very nicely when there are no dogs. The reason why you don't see him freak out more viciously is because Joel makes sure that the dog is as calm as possible and he snaps his brain out of this feedback loop whenever he can.

One technique to use is, going to a park with high dog traffic, and sitting with your dog nearby the trail where he can calmly observe from a distance. Desensitizing to the other walking dogs. Then gradually decrease the distance. It helped with my dog. Good luck
@riekaakier1526
@riekaakier1526 5 ай бұрын
When your dog wants to drive the other dog away, then you always have to increase the distance from the other dog, until he is responsive and trainable again. If your dog wants contact with the other dog and is frustrated that he can't get there, you can do a lot of leash training with him, it will pay off as he gets older!

A couple of questions if thats ok? Do you ever use prong collars or e-collars? Are you using a gentle leader here? It’s hard to see it. Is it not true , because another trainer said that pulling or correcting your dog with a gentle leader can hurt their neck , back, etc… also what if you have 2 dogs/ is it important they are consistent with the sides each time/ one always on left and the other always on the right ? Thank you

@rptrick79 5 ай бұрын
Please allow me to answer, Mr Beckman doesn't use prong collars or e-collars because if used at the wrong time (timing is everything with dog training so you don't reinforce the wrong thing like say if you were using only treats) because they can have an adverse relation to what you're trying to get rid of. Essentially the dog will still do the same unwanted behavior but you won't see the precursors to it, or triggers because of the use of them. Which leaves you "cooked" especially when dealing with a dog that is reactive towards other dogs and aggressive also.. as far as the gentle leader he says down and to the side. Every tool can be used improperly and cause harm if. We are not pulling the dogs head off, it's just stopping and the dog hits the end of the leash. The gentle leader can be weaned off of if you're being consistent with your training If there's any science backed evidence, on the gentle leader destroying dogs when used correctly, like the papers written on aggressive dogs being rehabbed with only treats and kisses. Please post it or show a video.

@@lorihoffman6150The nerdiot that replied to you is not the channel creator. It's actually someone that hates people and couldn't care less about animals, thinking that dogs do not have a pack mentality and that dominating a dog is harmful to their whittle feewings 😢😢😢 nerdiot is part of a group of other irriots that will never ever ever attempt to train a dog with aggression problems because they have the balls of a hen and a little less mental capacity. Modern psychological behaviorists have published feelings based ideologies on papers in academic circles, but cannot ever show the attempts at force free methods actually working in real life. So my dog somehow figured out that she can be more aggressive when the gentle leader is off, but as soon as she sees it becomes the most behaved girl in the world. All bad behaviors go away, with gentle leader on. Bad behaviors come back, with gentle leader off. Since she hates the gentle leader because she knows she's no longer in control, I've been using the act of putting it on as a correction method. Put it on for a little bit, she calms down, and I take it off. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.
