She did learn to predict the leash correction you were doing earlier only after a few times while being very focused on Prince. Her brain was still able to work out a way of minimizing the correction by approaching you before you did it. Clever girl. She was being very sweet and playful while muzzled because she had no other option of behavior. Amazing how some dogs are incredibly perceptive and too smart!

I’ve been wondering about that, when I apply a correction-which my dog needs less and less- he seldom looks at me unless I speak to him. He’s hyper focused on everything around us, sitting quietly, not reacting, but it’s as if he’s aware of me without needing to look. That’s probably when I should add the knee bump to redirect his focus back to me. As usual, I love hearing the play-by-play voiceovers during each session.

I had a neighbor growing up that had a Doberman. This was back in the day when dogs were outside dogs. He was in a small fenced in area. Once he got out and got in a fight with my dog. He use to bark all the time and seemed mean. I never liked them since then……until this channel. Prince has won my heart 💜

These videos feel like dog training videos for people. Like, I feel like I'm being trained. It's fun. I have a friend who asks me to watch her dog Paisley. It's a miniature pinscher. Surprisingly intelligent, but strong little dog. I've seen her interact with other dogs, and she'll start pulling the leash and freaking me out, but when she gets to other dogs, she just kind of sniffs them and interacts with them surprisingly normally. I never consider these things when I'm caring for a dog. I often consider the animals feelings, but I'm not the least bit experienced in how to handle those situations. I greatly appreciate these coaching practices. You're amazing!

She is just like my 7 year old rescue staff. She was never socialised! Been following your videos to the letter for 3 months and she is a different dog. Ditto! My rescue staffie can only deal with mediated intros to other dogs - any random surprises from around a blind corner or an off leash run up is a no go. A big improvement so far after only 2mths, but we can do more together. He loves to please and be told 'very good boy' so he does really try!

Had a friend who worked with Doberman's in the Army. They were too smart to serve in war. They knew they were going out there to die-they're as intelligent as a nine year old child. They're arguably one of the smartest dogs in the World.

Dobermans are that smart! Lol. I have a Doberman mix, and he is that smart to figure that out quite quickly. That couple really have there hands full with this dog. That is a dog that if you give in inch, will take a mile. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency. That's all I have to say about their beautiful puppers 😁

This one is the most like my newest dog I've seen so far. Flips out when hearing other dogs, heavy pulling when he sees one (I've eliminated most of the other pulling using your method but it's just not enough when he sees other dogs), not looking at me after corrections, very boldly coming into other dog's space, but he once he meets it's all fine. Interesting. IMHO she’s unusually focused (obsessive?) like the way she trotted along the pool rim for a while; could see her benefitting from some work & fun...something w/thinking & stamina. Maybe she was a watch dog in a yard of some kind or has the breeding to be especially independent & obsessive. Good to see how JB’s method develops rapport in tougher cases. Luv the goal for a sociable dog🐕

Me beauceron learned that having a muzzle on does not allow to eat garbage/scraps. So, when off-leash, she was not even sniffing/looking for it so much. As soon as the muzzle was off - she was starting to "hunt" for these.

Great instructions for us. Learned a lot, but most importantly that it's not okay for our dog to just "roll up" to another dog they're meeting for the first time. Many other dogs will try to diffuse this type of rude behavior because they don't want trouble, but certain individuals take it "personally" when approached brazenly. Of course, then a fight is more likely. I really enjoy your videos. The cameraperson is highly skilled, as well! That's not easy, because everything and everyone is moving around a lot! You've got a great team!

This is exactly how my dog is with other dogs, minus the barking. Even trying to play after she meets them. Absolutely our fault not socializing her more but between where we live and the pandemic, we did the best we could. You're right about owners not wanting anything to do with you when your dog reacts like that! And I don't blame them, but man only makes the problem worse. Thank you so much for this.

Thank you so much for posting these videos. I found your channel yesterday, and I've been binge watching. I have a 2 year old pit who's fence reactivity at my and my wife's new house with dogs passing by has scared me into letting him meet new dogs. He's playful and submissive to our parents dogs, but tense around new dogs. I think some of it has to do with my tension. I'm learning just as much from your behavior as I am from the dogs. I need to be confident and proactive to the warning signs and be ready to step in and give correction before things happen. Confidence seems key!

I think one thing is to really try to keep track of your own body and how you're feeling. I brought my 8yr old pit you the dog park recently just to work on leash reactivity, not even letting him play with other dogs, but just reading training him to stop lunging. I noticed my heart rate and pressure going up as well as my body getting tense. I had to remind myself to take deep breaths periodically and relax. Dogs can probably pick up on this and react to this as well.

The foster I took in two months ago is EXACTLY like this dog. He’s a dogo argentino and weighs 55kg which is my weight. I’m having such a hard time with him and none of the trainers I’ve been to has helped the slightest. I don’t know what to do, I’m at a complete loss. Nobody wants to adopt him because he’s too much which means I’m stuck with this strong, terrible mannered dog because I just can’t give up on him, if they take him to the shelter he’s never coming out of there and I couldn’t live with that 😕

I like this vid and I've been watching alot of your vids on leash reactivity and dominance. I'm at the point now where I can't bring my 3 yr old 95# boy to the dog park anymore because he goes at other dogs, not all just the ones that don't submit, have too much energy (i.e. sprinting into the park or around), are intact, or all the above, or hell, is a husky or doodle. This last time he could have been blinded in an eye because the other dog got a nick on the inside of his bottom eyelid. My dog def started it by posturing over him, both got stiff, and then my boy followed up by trying to nip his face. He was trained at 2 with a prong collar and an ecollar. He was having issues going up and nipping people (mostly guys) that got too close on walks and pulling. He has great obedience on leash now, except for when a dog comes by. Not much we could do about dog reactivity because he'd behave at the dog park which we trained near/in as well, and there weren't dogs in the neighborhood to walk by and practice with. I'm incredibly frustrated at this point because more than likely the use of those tools exacerbated an issue that could have been handled differently. I've learned a lot, but even if I use a muzzle and a gentle leader, I doubt I'm ever going to find someone that's willing to even walk near my dog to give these methods a shot. I can't even do it now on a regular leash, people just turn around or across the street. And same goes for the park. The weird thing is that he builds to the level of confidence to snag onto another dog when he goes to a new park. After he goes once, he's not easygoing the next time. He will listen all the way up to the gate to the main park and sit and stay just fine. But once he's in, I've seen him run down other dogs or wait till they get to him to snag and pin them. He always knows he's done wrong after but it never makes a difference. I will give the muzzle and gentle leader a go, but I'm doubtful he's ever going to get back to how he used to be. I think he'll learn to not react on the leash and to ignore. But I doubt he won't not go after those specific dogs once the leash is off, even if the muzzle is on, and I've seen how common people react to muzzles. I fear he'll just be a long walk boy. Sorry for the pity party, I really want him to get better and after that last visit, feeling a bit hopeless. Y'all get on your dogs early and my personal experience says to stay away from ecollars and prongs if you want them to be around other dogs. If you've made it work I'd like to know.

Try exercising your dog before going to the dog park. That will help exhaust some of his energy beforehand. Don't know your training methods, but sure Joel could give you some pointers. Also, when you do go to the dog park, walk around with your dog on the outside of the fence first for awhile, let your dog meet through fence. Only you can determine (if) and (when) your dog is ready to go inside the park.

When dogs lick their owners' hands, feet, face, and mouth, it is a sign of sweetness. This is a remnant from when they were puppies and used to lick their mothers for food. When a dog licks its owner, it is showing the same kind of affection to the owner as it would to its own mother. Some friendly dogs will lick their owners even if they have never met them before, a behavior that is often seen in puppyhood. This is a cute gesture, but it is a hygienically unsafe behavior. In such a case, it is better to stop the behavior by standing up and answer the dog's desire to be pampered by petting and playing with him a lot instead.🐶🐶🐶🐕🐕🐕

I haven't, but I plan on trying it. She barks at people, dogs, and even holiday ornaments. She's high energy gets bored and starts nipping at everyone. At home she comes, sits stays, waits, leave it ect. Looks at me to go out, sits till I say okay but once we hit the sidewalk she starts up.

Joel I am sure you noticed but she would not allow any of the other dogs to sniff her rear. Prince tried and she freaked out and then the other dogs did and she again went nuts. Do you think it would help her if you teach her that it is OK for other dogs to sniff her? To me it's a huge trigger for her.

I've been watching Beckman's videos for the past 8 months since we've adopted our dog. However, now I have a question. With our dog (14 months hunting mix), these types of corrections work when done multiple times for the same situation (same dog, same moment, same dog/trigger). But he flips out again the same way like the corrections didn't even happen on certain other dogs (usually unneutered male dogs; my dog has been neutered 2 months ago). So if the situation/scene/dog/day changes, he's at it the same way. Any advice? He's not aggresive, never was. He's "just" reactive to certain dogs or triggers. Any advice?

Life is filled with natural positive and negative reinforcement. praise, food, play is positive reinforcement; being left alone, disengagement, and if you fail to see that puddle your going to get wet are negative reinforcement. Having elements of both develop healthy grown adults, animal and human.
