Praise God for this timely message, I’ve been in Philippians the past couple weeks and this is the central message of that book that I’ve been challenged and encouraged by: to find all my joy and confidence in Christ

So rich of a teaching. I can't say I am there yet. I am very careful with my words for fear of offending. Though I don't want to purposefully start arguments. I do want to be free in this way. I am free enough to know that I don't want to be in a cult / group with total conformity. I still have a long way to go but I believe God is working on me!

ladyesther Even if you somehow manage to clear your conscience, that does not make you innocent. There is a better way to discover the dynamic of soundness of mind. Joy is child’s play compared to soundness of mind.

There are good things that God can give us on this earth - relationships, encounters, fun, games, movies we enjoy - but they should not become foundational. Not become the idol. He is the source of our joy, and He can give us things to *enjoy* - but they should not become the goal. Don't confuse enjoyment with joy - it's similar, I imagine, to confusing want with need. "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." Funny thing is, this isn't restrictive, but liberating: reality is not ordered such that placing anything other than God first will ultimately work. If you don't mentally place Him first, things will fall out of whack because you're viewing reality incorrectly and you will thus live incorrectly - "for as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." I'm reminded of how Ray Comfort (KZbin channel "LivingWaters", highly recommend it!) puts an example: God has gifts for us, but in His timing, not our own. When we try to do things our way, it's like a child trying to snag some money from their father's wallet when the father was about to give them a gift. The money is still there, the gift is 'still there', but ruined now: out of order. That moment ruined by sin and impatience, rather than resulting in gratefulness for a plan you (at the very least on this side of the veil) will likely never be fully aware of. A wound that may never heal on this side of glory, even if forgiven. We all stumble and fall: seek to get up and put Him first: you need His help to do so, but the good thing is He's promised to give us what we need. Of course, as Dr. Charles Stanley repeatedly reminds folks at the end of his sermons: this doesn't apply to you if you're not saved. Jesus can set you free!

Great Truth pastor John.. one of the major reasons why I so respect Desiringgod.org is you dont shut down your comment section. Although you have many who try to use the very techniques you describe in this post to shame or attempt to make your joy in Christ irrelevant.. Some of us have attempted to defend your ministry I I have come to believe it grieves your heart.. I believe you read these like David did with Shimmiah.. it is a source for you to Glorify God in that I may be used to humble your insights David always strengthened himself in the LORD.. his joy always came from intimacy with and joy in Christ..

Amen, let's find our primary and lasting joy always in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If our identity rests in Him it cannot be taken away by anyone. If it rests in the things or even people of this world, we have not established a firm foundation for our well-being. God willing we will all heed the words of our brother in Christ Mr. Piper in this clip and adapt accordingly.

Good message. Joy and suffering are often found together in the Christian life. For example, in 2 Cor 7:4 Paul says that he is "overflowing with joy in all our afflictions." And again in Col 1:24 he says "I rejoice in my sufferings for you." The same combination of joy and suffering are also found in Psalm 94:19; Hab 3:17-19; 2 Cor 6:10; 1 Thess 1:6; James 1:2-4; and 1 Pet 1:6.

oh how wonderful to have the pipers and the macarthurs pastors to lead the flocks these days. but imagine how even more awesome it could have been if rc was on the frontline battlefields with these christian leaders. as it is, we rely on Christ alone, and we rejoice in our sufferings. and we also are joyful for rc where he is right now.

If you have a Bible, you can start/continue reading it. Maybe one chapter from the New Testament and one from the Old Testament each day. Ask God to help you know Him, to send His Holy Spirit to help you and to grant you repentance, and the grace to trust in Jesus. He will help you understand and love the truth of HIs word, and give you true joy in Him. Ask Him and He will give it to you. God bless you

Yeah, for a long time I have been pondering the connection between serious Socialism / Communism and Christianity. I have spent quite a bit of time watching Communists and Libertarians talking past each other and wondering why exactly is it that the Libertarians cannot seem to make a dent in the minds of the Communists. The conclusion, as you may have guessed from this lecture, is that it's a spiritual battle that both are typically on the wrong side of. God and Jesus will set you free and Jesus alone. You will be a slave to your sins otherwise, and a nation of slaves is easy to control; You'll have Communism soon enough.

Romans 2:28-29 KJVS [28] For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: [29] But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Piper does not have nor understand this kind of joy...for two reasons. #1. Those who truly understand the dynamic of “joy” don’t refer to it that way. The word itself is subjective. #2. If he had this “joy” there would be no reason to downplay the worldly definition of “joy”. That would be to take a defensive posture...something that is contrary to what Christ taught.
@ponderwoodtimes4 жыл бұрын
Soooo then: #1. What is your definition of joy #2. How do we get and keep that kind of joy?
@mr.c24854 жыл бұрын
Mish R. Hi Mish! Haven’t seen you on here before. First timer?
@mr.c24854 жыл бұрын
Mish R. Joy is just one realization that characterizes the life of the true believer. As I’ve said, it’s a realization..it is not a means to an end. Joy is subjective. The Israelites took joy in mocking and criticizing those who were not of their tribe. Thus, they were given the Ten Commandments. Using gods name and authority in order to get the upper hand is to take gods name in vain. So, joy in this case was sinful...And yet it was inspired through the truth. Joy pales in comparison to the other gifts that are available to the believer. While joy is always a reality, it is merely residual. That is not to slight it by any means, but joy can be very fleeting as I’m sure you know. What we’re looking for is something that is permanent and lasting. Find that and joy is just a bonus. Godspeed!
@ponderwoodtimes4 жыл бұрын
@@mr.c2485 I think I see where you are coming from. It definitely is a perspective to consider. Perhaps instead of Pastor Piper using joy as the means of becoming unshakable, it should be Christ Himself-the source of true joy and every other intangible gift/blessing of following Him. Is that what you're getting at?
@mr.c24854 жыл бұрын
Mish R. I know that he would agree with that. What he wouldn’t agree with is perfection or sinlessness in us. Those two are the trademarks of the power of Christ in flesh....Our flesh. Why would God send us a perfect example if it could not be followed? People fear the word perfect...that’s why the phrase, “ no one is perfect” is so popular. Problem: perfection in us is found throughout scripture. And not just “trying” but actually achieving. Those who say “no one is perfect” are those who expect to fail. That creates doubt...and where doubt exists there can be no confidence, and where there is no confidence there is no expectation and where there is no expectation there is no faith. I know that’s a lot to digest, but I believe that you’re up to challenge. I would be happy to explain the “hows” of sinless perfection if you’re interested. If I’ve freaked you out, then perhaps later. Godspeed!
