Why newbies FAIL using TREATS and TOYS to TRAIN DOGS

This video goes over one reason why newbie owners and newbie dog trainers FAIL when attempting to get their dogs to work for toys and treats as well as to get their dogs to like something like nail clippers, guests visiting the house or other dogs. This video is all about understanding the importance of the trainer’s MOVEMENT when training, and how it can make or break your training. A trainer could write the most amazing training plan which looks amazing on paper, but the way the trainer MOVES during the training could totally make or break the training depending on the dog.
All dogs have different personalities, so some dogs are not as affected by movement as others. But it is extremely important to learn to read your dog’s body language to see if your movement affects your dog.
This video also really is a great example of how you can turn a punisher into a reinforcer and turn a reinforcer into a punisher. This is why it’s extremely important to understand that you can’t just label things as being intrinsically reinforcing or intrinsically punishing to dogs. Everything is subjective and fluid. Only the dogs brain decides what is reinforcing and what is punishing, not the trainer.
Halo the Border Collie is just 9 months old in this video and the goal with him is to condition him to think anything I do with him is reinforcing. If you see something makes your dog feel uncomfortable you can train them in training sessions to be confident instead of worried to create a resilient learner.
I show myself working with a dog who is shy and reserved with guests in this video as well as describe how I worked with my own dog’s fear of a hand reaching at him. This is in no way advice for training your own dog. If you have a dog who is acting shy, reactive or aggressive toward people you need to go and hire a professional dog trainer who doesn’t use any forms of physical or psychological intimidation to help you with setting up a training plan, because even if you try to follow what I did in the video, you might raise criteria too fast and that can cause the dog’s behavior to get worse rather than better. As well as you might not be able to read your dog’s body language that it is time to raise or lower criteria.

FANTASTIC VIDEO - I could tell how difficult it was for you to push your dog past comfort so hopefully that ONE time will be enough for people to understand why we don’t do that. A client recently told me it was OK to pick up her fearful small breed dog and that he wouldn’t bite but both my husband and I in the session and said we wouldn’t do it and explained why. After the person left I still had the feeling that they felt like we must’ve been afraid or something and maybe we weren’t as skilled as we say because we didn’t want to do that. Thankfully, I saw the client again and this second time the dog happily came up to me on his own because I hadn’t pushed in the first time. There’s just so much bad information out there… Thanks for being a shining beacon of good information we can refer to!

This concept of "keepaway" also works well when you want your dog to pay attention and stay with you when off leash. When my dog is sniffing around and finding the environment much more interesting than me, I just keep walking (if it is safe to do so and there is nothing dangerous, like a road, between me and the dog) and sooner or later he'll look up, think "Hey, where's she going? It must be much more interesting over there!", and come running. If I were to follow him around and try to get his attention by talking to him and trying to distract him from whatever he's sniffing, it would make him want to be with me less.

I could talk about this subject all day long. I've really embraced play as a training modality to the point of obsession. It has become a total rabbit hole. I can learn so much about a dog from it's play style. It's now my main way to address aggressive dogs as we can work through areas of conflict in the context of play and give the dog some clarity without any actual conflict. It's like playing an instrument, you get to a stage when you're no longer thinking about what you're playing which frees you up to concentrate on HOW you're playing.

Hi Emily. Well I think I'm finally starting to understand why your dogs do not break or not do the so-called command you're asking of it. Because you start with the lowest criteria and you work yourself up as the dog is getting the idea what you want. This is so opposite of how I learned to train dogs. of course as you know the old-fashioned way was have your dog do something wrong so that you can correct the dog so he knows that that's not the right thing to do. But I see with your type of training the more I watch your videos there's no need for that because they don't really break the command or the tasks that you're asking them to do because you would not be asking them to do it if the criteria was too high. I hope I am making sense. Anyways after 20 years of training dogs the other way it's been very hard for me to wrap my head around exactly what you're doing. But this video helped me very much understand why the dogs respond totally differently with the different kinds of training. I think I'm so ingrained in how I've trained all the dogs the old way that I'm going to have to hire a positive reinforcement trainer so it's Hands-On for me and I can learn it Hands-On. Sometimes watching a video it's very hard because it's not hands on. Again thanks for the video and the most beautiful way you work with dogs.

Yes, I know, I did it the old fashioned way too. Im glad the video helped. Hey, just be careful hiring ANY trainer... Im afraid that sometimes.... people quickly jump into "positive training" as a career without enough education because they dont see the harm they can do by just using treats, but this video demonstrates that lots of harm can be done if they are not good at reading dogs, raising criteria or knowing how to move etc... So really be careful :)

@@kikopup thank you for expressing your concerns and letting me know about trainers. I totally understand what you're saying and it's one of the reasons why I don't just go find a trainer. I went on a couple of sites that you had recommended to find a trainer and then I whittled it down and then I spoke to a couple of the trainers. I'm too disabled now to train my next service dog. It's just way too much work and dedication and energy Etc. So I know I will need somebody's help to do this method. Anyways thank you for reaching out and letting me know how you feel.I appreciate it and like I said I'm really aware of what trainers can say they do but they have no idea really what's going on with positive reinforcement training. BTW I have a question for you Emily. Why is my small service dog he's 25 lbs he's a mixed Terrier why even though I did not train him at all using positive reinforcement training I used my own method but why is he such a confident happy calm yet energetic dog. I mean he's just such a great dog and he is so good at the service tasks I trained him to do. I just sometimes wonder how can so called bad traing still bring a really good dog to fruition.. Well we all make mistakes and all dogs are different. I mean there are some dogs that are oblivious to our movement, and you dont even need to worry about any of this. :) you can run right into them and bump them and they think its fun.

@@kikopup Yes, that too. Sometimes he even starts whining when the other dog, who he found so intimidating one second ago, moves away from him. But he has gotten a lot better with his reactivity over the last year or so, thanks to your guidance, and has made some new friends. Today we managed to walk past a french bulldog (he hates those) who was on the other side of a narrow street, no more than 5 meters. My dog only barked once and apart from that was able to give his attention to me instead. I'm so proud of him!

I never pushed treats in my dogs face but it did take me forever to find a high value treat she would like. She don’t like most dog treats lol then I learned her kibble works as well and when her kibble don’t interest her I use the treats. Love the doggie audience u have there lol

I would be interested in seeing a video about building play motivation in older untrained dogs. For my rescue dog it was so difficult, I had to build the interest in toys and fetch itself with food, backing up away from her when she had the toy was not working. I'm sure there has to be a better ans faster way than what I did (it was years ago and I knew little about dog training then, so I learned many things the hard way). I'm now going to implement a plan to build her motivation to tug (she does play tug sometimes, but maybe once a week or so) with things I heard in Hannah Branigan's podcast, but I'd love to see a video of the same topic in this channel.

I do touch on that in my relationship essentials VOD. It really depends on the breed and their personality, but I often teach play by just marking and reinforcing small approximation using food. the end result is you also get a dog who will play when food is around which is a bonus. With my exs dog Trisch the podenco she was extremely nervous to move into ones space... and nervous to play. SO the first step to her playing with toys was teaching her to fetch a ball to a bucket further away from us using clicker training - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX_QZZqletp1qpY then move the bucket closer and closer to us and then remove it. BEfore the pressure of moving into our space was too much. Now shes a very playful dog and loves getting crazy over toys. She also learned to like playing with water with the hose game.

I particularly liked the part at the end where you explained why you couldn't aim to show dogs that were 'untrained' or finding things difficult -- because *every* stage of the training has to aim at being within the dog's reach, at giving them loads and loads of tiny successes all building towards the training goals. Although it was sad to see the dog's mild unhappiness at the microphone being moved towards him, it was very instructive. And it was good to see how efficiently a confident dog can minimise his distress by simply taking himself out of the situation - withdrawing to his sofa until he is drawn back in again by the positive experiences that follow.

This is one of the very best training videos I have seen (I’m very new to your channel). I know you shouldn’t have put the microphone in his face, but it did teach how the psychology of the dog works and how our behaviour is responsible for the dogs reaction. I think you probably could have shown it with just the one movement rather than many and I’m sorry that you feel so bad about what you did. Fortunately dogs are so resilient and you are an excellent trainer and owner. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t make videos showing bad behaviours because your audience wants it. Your explanation at the end of why you don’t show that may be beneficial in each video so when viewed by a newbie they understand why the dog appears to not have the issues you’ve come to address. Your videos are invaluable and I really hope you gain popularity so there can be better owners in the world

This was a great video, although I literally broke out in sweat when seeing your dog react to your aversive behaviour. Now he is a well-trained and well-bonded dog and won't take any damage from that. I just thought about my dog, who is a fear dog and how much this behaviour would ruin her hard earned trust and shatter her minimal confidence.

Yeah. Its so damaging to "show what not to do" with the dogs in videos. This year I am going to do more videos on fear and reactivity. And I wont be showing what not to do or what it all looked like before because just ONE experience can be so damaging its not worth it ethically to change the minds of others and mess up some dogs training.

@@kikopup You are so right. People often don't understand that split seconds of a wrong action can throw people back weeks or months in training. When I got my dog, she would fear bite other dogs on sight without hesitation. She didn't make a difference if it was the playful poodle, the rusty senior terrier or a ten week old puppy. She was so used to biting being her only way of protecting her, that I had to shut her off dog contact for not calling for disasters to happen. We now know for over two years and she is still a fearful and insecure dog. She is 17 now, is chronically ill and generally just wants to be let in peace. Up to this day, we have about three to five dogs she can interact with for a few seconds, sometimes even wagging her tail a bit when she sees them, but every interaction going further or longer than a few seconds will result in her biting. With stranger's dogs she is more prone to biting quicker than with the known and "tolerated" dogs. She is now at the point where she usually will look at me when a dog approaches and see how I manage the situation, because she generally knows that I protect her from harm or harassment through other dogs. But then there are these people with their unleashed big dogs that "just want to say hello". Who let their dogs run uncontrolled into mine, causing her to freak out and eventually bite. I so often have to grab others' dogs to stop them from reaching mine. And often people actually laugh at me if they see me struggling with their big dogs, which I try to grab at the collar to stop it from running over my dog. Even when I ask the people to get their dogs away, they most often shrug it off "My dog doesn't bite, he's friendly, he just wants to say hello, he is just curious". Even when I tell them that my dog has a fear of big dogs, they generally don't care in 90% of the cases. When we have these occasions that other dogs reach my dog, because I couldn't react quick enough and they fear her so she has to protect herself, this always leaves a huge crack in her trust in me. She will then stop looking at me to handle further dog situations, but fall back in her old behaviour of biting on sight. It takes weeks to gain her trust back to the stage we were before. It actually breaks my heart if I see my dog at this stage. She is just a senior who had a really rough life and has huge trust issues. She just wants a human she can rely on. Then the other ignorant people come and totally ignore my words, my dog's body language or any common sense. And this causes my dog to shut down emotionally and lose her trust so she thinks that her human let her down and she now has to manage her safety alone again. She just wants to be let in peace and not be harassed.

When I lived in Sweden people are way more respectful of other members of the public they would NEVER let their dog run over... It sucks that walks have to be so stressful for me. I was lucky that when a dog was coming for Wish, a mastiff that had broken out of a harness and was charging us... I put her up on my shoulders and kicked the dog hard as it was trying to grab her leg with its open jaws.... After that... wish seemed like she "knew" I would defend her with all I had and relaxed more.

@@kikopup I just saw your comment. Thank you so much for your kind words. I have also made the experience that it really matters *where* one walks the dog. There are areas I can drive to, where people will put their dogs on leashes (most of the times) and generally accept if I keep a distance with my dog. Sadly these places, or at least the nearest I know of, are about 45 minutes away (for one route, so 1,5 hours drive way in total). When my dog has a bad day, she can only walk for like ten to fifteen minutes, before she gets tired. If it is cold, rainy, snowy or any moist weather, she usually doesn't walk at all (like further than my property). That excludes long walks from fall to the end of spring on 80% of the days. In high summer heat, she quickly overheats and has difficulty breathing (she has lung cancer), that excludes long walks and car rides during most of the summer days. In the "dark months" every of our walks pre and past my work time (where I have time to walk her long routes) is in complete darkness, which excludes many routes to go as they aren't safe for women to walk in the darkness (because they are in the middle of nowhere and assaults happen frequently). So I'm pretty limited with her actually being able to plan long walks. I have to time when she has a good day (and is physically able to walk a while) and when the weather is okay for her. Then we make our trips to these far away areas where she can walk without harassment. In my area and on most of the walks I take her to with the car, that are closer nearby, I sadly have to deal with loads of ignorant people. I am sorry for what you had to go through with Wish. Now Mastiffs are beast, I don't know why people don't secure them more. We just had an instance here where a small dog was bitten by a giant mastiff because the owner couldn't hold him. The mastiff is just in his puberty phase and is starting to get aggressive towards other dogs. With a woman unable to hold these 70 kilos, it is just calling for a disaster.

Teach the dog to go into the bath on a thick bathroom mat, Then when hes comfortable and confident doing it on cue, add some warm water to the mat and you can also practice wiping him with a cloth with warm water on it.

Thank you. I know you didn't like doing the aversive bit, but it really clearly demonstrates to me why my dog used to like children, and then started barking at them (plenty of adults shove hands in his face too, so not just children - I do try to stop them and ask them to let him come to them if he chooses). I did all these mistakes and hopefully my dog is not too fearful, so it had not much implications on him (except one fear)... It seems obvious to people to introduce things by showing them. And de facto this is aversive! Dogs don't think the same way! And as an example of consequences, now I deal with a dog afraid of harnesses and I know that his fear is my fault. Wearing harness is a huge jump into private space of the dog and when it's done too many times (for 10 months), later or soon dog will tell ENOUGH! Even if harness is a promise of car ride to the forest, good walk and big fun, the process of wearing is so stressful, that all good moments later do not compensate it. Tonight will try to make Malusi (my border collie) to chase the harness and to play with it :) Thank you a lot for your videos, they show things so clearly. Just reading books, manuals and scientific articles is not enough. It's a great basis, but only experience makes it be productive. Your dogs are so lucky to have you!

Awe. Lots of people struggle with the harness. And its hard to convince people to switch when the dog obviously hates it more than even a prong collar... You can use distraction to your advantage too. Think about when you put on clothes / shoes that are uncomfortable. If you just sat in your house doing nothing you would be very aware and hyperfocus on them, but if you went to a party you might not think about them as much. So one thing you could do is get the dog out the door then put the harness on, but of course take care that the dog is not going to run off etc.

I suggest getting a cushy dog bed that your DOG likes. As a guide dog puppy raiser, always look for a good way to introduce new or novel items. After brushing my teeth, I put pups toothpaste on the brush, and let her sniff and go for it a few days in a row. She gladly put in it her mouth on day 2. Now we are advancing to chin rest. I have a question to this methode when counter conditioning prey drive: My dog is a grey hound mix, so very reactive toward squirrels, rabbits, deer running away. I have started to be able to get her into an under-threshhold situation when far enough away, and when she stays under threshhold, I hold a tube of liver paste to her mouth to reward her because in moments like those it is still impossible to get her to look at me, but I want to reinforce the fact that she is not reacting. She licks the paste, but technically I am putting it in her face. Would you say that this is a different situation, or should I use a different aproach to this?

Awww poor Halo took one for the team there but he's so healthy he will be fine. It's good to realize that as a trainer who is not always perfect generally a healthy-ish dog will get over a smaller error in a resilient way. Although I did find myself getting a little upset about you breaking your values even a tiny bit on purpose for the video, especially with your own dog. I feel like if you do this again (I kind of hope you will just repeat your explanation instead, it's really just peer pressure) it might be ethically better to borrow a shelter dog or a dog with a punishment history who is going to need to learn trust for humans anyway, than break trust with Halo who, while he certainly can recover, should not need to for our benefit. I am totally guilty of doing something similar with my dog for a client in my earlier days, so I am not judging you at all. And I make plenty of mistakes on accident, especially with my anxiety dog! I guess because I tried to start all my dogs at the beach it never occurred to me to use attractant away motion with water and they all hate water. My very easily traumatized dog looked super hot one day when I was watering and I sprayed him trying to do him a favor and now I still have trouble getting him not to try to beat the door down to get inside whenever the hose is on. It's like that one incident was so strong that it eroded the counterconditioning if I don't actively cc him on a regular basis. 😞

Yea I almost didnt post it. Actually my brother who was over doing kerioki pointed it at halo like for him to sing and that weirded him out... so it had already happened and I planned to work on the issue, and yes, I shouldnt have "showed" it but halo had had extensive work with objects being moved toward him because in the past he was sensitive about it. Even though I respect your own reasons to not have footage of how the dog behaves prior to training, I think you also forget how much dogs can be forgiving and can learn properly. Not being able to show the dog's bad behaviors only make the positive training wave lose credibility. The dog already has the bad behavior in the first place. A single additional day where the dog is already practicing what he has been practicing his whole life will not be so detrimental. That being said, of course we don't want to put other people and animals in danger by becoming decoys. But there are several ways to just setup a simple camera/mobile recording to get simple footage for better before and after effect. Really....use technology to your favor and document it properly.... A simple tripod and mobile pointed with a wide angle, letting it record can make already a huge difference. It is not hard.

The thing is, every time the dog rehearses a behavior you can't undo that learning no matter if you use punishment or reinforcement. The experience is there forever, and only deteriorates with illness or sickness. Learning doesnt remove previous learning. You can only build stronger pathways... So by having the dog over threshold, Every time a behavior is rehearsed it makes it stronger. So you really do the client and dog a disservice. Like if you had ptsd, and were scared of gun fire, being scared 1 more time to get it on film is really detrimental. Also for trainers like me the question of ethics comes up. It is just not in the best interest of the individual dog to scare the shit out of them for the entertainment of humans. It goes against my training manifesto that I have pledged to, subjecting the dog to undue stress or discomfort for selfish goals. progressivereinforcementtraining.com/ Every time a behavior is repeated, a layer of myelin is added causing the signal to move faster and stronger.... There is no way to unwrap the myelin besides age and sickness... So for behavior modification to function at it's BEST for the animal, the animal should NEVER rehearse the behaviors you don't want to see. It's not in their best interest.

Because that is how science works. And I understand that when you say about fears such as PTSD, but the way you mention, you are classifying all fear in the same category. There are fears that are manageable, and extreme fears should be avoided, for sure and create new pathways. But the same way that you say that once it's learned, it will stay there, doesn't really remove the problem, does it? Statements such as 'NEVER', is not under our control and is not scientific. We prepare dogs as much as we can, but it doesn't matter how many pathways we teach, the bad response is still there. And will happen again, if unfortunately this dog changes home, or is put in a stressful situation out of our control, owners abandon dog, etc. Again, my main critique here is: Do proper Science. I have lots of videos where I train other breeds and I have had the opportunity to work with tens of thousands of dogs during my career. They all learn in exactly the same way but different breeds have different tendencies and all dogs have different personalties. Border Collies can tend to be more sensitive to movement toward them so Halo was a great example. I did own a beagle for 17 years. My beagle was actually the easiest dog. And most beagles tend to be extremely friendly with humans and touch and handling. Usually the issue with most beagles is listening when there is prey around. I suggest you check out my VOD where I work with two sight hounds one who previously hunted to teach them not to hunt and ignore prey dogmantics.com/product-category/video-on-demand/ If you get an easy border collie that is wonderful but sometimes people get a border collie that has a tendency to reactivity guarding or aggression... And then they can be very difficult for their owners. Yes, Im afraid all the dogs I train in videos will look pre-trained because I break the steps up small enough that the dog is successful and knows what to do every step of the way. over the last decade Ive been invited all over the world to africa asia europe north and south america to speak at conferences and seminars about my "unreal" training, If my training isn't "real" to you then I probably dont want to be a "real trainer" whatever that is. I train without the use of physical or psychological intimidation and it makes the dogs look like they are already trained, I love that. Im sorry its a disappointment to others. But I will continue educating and planting the seed that there is another way to train, a more compassionate way.
