This is a bit related to martial arts, but none the less an important lesson that I got from To kill a mockingbird when i was a child. Violence or being violent does not make you man, knowing when and how to act on principal does. In the book Bob Ewell used violence or means of violence to get what he wanted with pure malice and as a result is essentially the villain of the book (outside of the general nature of racism). Bob Ewell abused his family, threaten others, lied to cause harm ( that being the case that the book is mainly centered around), and hurt without regard for others. Bob Ewell was a man that saw violence as a solution for his problems rather than using principals. A big moment in the book that stands out to me years later is when Atticus sat outside Tom Robinson's cell reading a newspaper with a lamp for a whole night and talked to a mob that came to kill Tom before the kids stepped in. Atticus stood by his principals and that is what made him a great character. I don't' remember the book word for word ,but I think one of the best lines is that courage is fighting even when you know for certain you'll lose. As well it helped me learn that problems aren't solved by your fists like in action movies and part of that was how he taught scout that she was getting too old to be fighting with other children. Mind you I was a young lad myself and I was fairly found of stories where the bad guy was beaten in an epic fight, so for me it was a lasting lesson to use your words and that using your head in an situation is more important than letting anger or hatred guide your actions. It's sad to hear that kids in California won't get to read this book and perhaps understand that life is rarely as black and white or simple as we'd like it to be or perhaps get a better understanding of injustice, even if it is fictional. Stories at the end of the day allow us to see the world from someone elses point of view and ultimately it teaches those who listen to them lessons, even if they don't understand them right away. And sometimes the only way to tell a story is through fictional examples, because sometimes reality can't tell you everything. Thanks for listening.

I have taught “To Kill a Mockingbird” for years to my sophomores. It is essential that kids learn the context of the time and how far we’ve come regarding race in American society. But it’s not just that; it’s about not judging anyone based upon first impressions (not just by race), at least not until you’ve “walked in their shoes”. Also, at the trial of Tom Robinson, Atticus makes clear that there is a lie perpetuated by schools, that we are all equal physically and mentally, when in fact people are created differently, being better at different things. But one thing where we are all equal is in a court of law. This was not theory, he said, but a “living, working reality.” The book’s power is very meaningful with the themes of justice, racism, appearances, heroes, etc, and SJWs do a great disservice trying to cancel history and literature, for in the end they are just futilely trying to cancel reality.

To express frustration, yes... In my mother tongue profanities hold a powerful charge in them, at least for me. A negative one. Residing in quite a dark inner place right now, I do swear. I would even say I no longer "swear", but simply talk in profanities to myself and few people I trust, when opening up, as phrasing things otherwise feels like lying. And lying is no good in those circumstances. Funnily enough, it's the contrary in English: swearing subjectively devalues the words. I don't know if that's the difference between first and second language, or the languages themselves. But your rant reminded me of a time when I didn't. When I didn't feel the need to use profanities to express my thoughts and feelings. I'll try to regain a hold of my life again. Thanks, Coach.

thanks for chiming in on this topic, and I do appreciate your channel content without being foul mouthed. :D I don't want to equate not swearing as been righteous, but as you noted, words and action go hand in hand. You hit it right on point, words have meaning, in a decaying culture where people continue to use words as they have become meaningless, and cussing equated with coolness or certain kind of image to aspire to. Whether people realises or not this build an eroding hardened character and culture. Whether we are in position of greater influence or not (leadership, instructor, coach, master etc), our words should be seasoned with salt, truth, constructive rebuke, thoughtful restoration, encouragement and beauty. As John 1 puts in, "In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him nothing wasn't anything made that was made...And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.." Christ is the truth that John understood as God has promised, the God incarnate who redeems us, turning and provides us the grace to be Christ-like in our speech and action. To me martial combat and the root philosophy of martial arts recognised life long practice is about perseveration and cultivation, not sheer destruction or erosion of character. Truth and beauty. I don't swear for attention but to spice up jokes or vent frustration regardless if anyone's around, it's helpful for putting an exlamation point on certain things you want to get across. It's kinda like screaming, you don't wanna scream at everyone every day but to prevent someone from doing something or underline how upset you are on rare occasion it's helpful. Sometimes I don't want you to consider my point, sometimes I want to get across that their actions or words has made me very angry and this is where I'll draw a line.

A lot of people use swear words to "fill-out" or "buy time" in their everyday speech. E.g. Instead of the usual "Uhm...uhmm..." that is used to "buy time" while we think of what to say next, some will say, "F***in'....f***in'..." or otherwise use all manner of swear words to "ornament", "fill out" their language. While this kind of swear usage doesn't aim to insult or demean, it effectively lessens the dynamic range of one's speech. Since you've already been using swear words in a non-angry context, you've left yourself with nowhere to go when you do indeed mean to sound angry or forceful. Tl;dr - If you constantly pepper your language with meanlngless swear words, when you DO need to take the intesity up a notch, using more swear words won't have much of an affect.

Also as someone who is fascinated by linguistic etymology and evolution I think all words can be use to add varying levels of complexity or "flavor" based on the given situation. But it should be a reflection of who you are at that given time and not just used for the sake of using it. A good example is Holden Caulfield in The Catcher In The Rye; he is very particular about what aggressive or coarse words he uses and even gets upset when he sees a particular word written on a wall for no reason than shock value.

Hey Ramsey question for the coach, being a long lengthy person ho W do you fight on the inside. We recently got a new guy who is a very explosive wrestler, I spr him for the first time the other day he got on the inside of me. It's been a long time since someone has gotten on the inside of me, and I think this is the first time that I can recall that I knew person to striking has gotten in on the inside of me which is awesome. What is some drills I can work on to improve my inside game. Thanks

That depends on which combat sport I’m training for. In the context of MMA, at that range, I’m clinch fighting and working for takedowns. In Muay Thai, I’m clinch fighting and looking for sweeps. In sanda, I’m working for takedowns. In boxing, I’m making frames, hip checking and doing damage. What’s your sport, and what exactly is happening?

@@RamseyDewey kickboxing mostly, however I would like to have a mma match before I'm 30, 28 now. We really don't do cliche work while sparring with a new guy, and I don't normally need to cliche, which I suppose I need to work on that. My question is more of how to strike effectively with long reach in close range situations. I guess there no magic bullet , just more training.

Hey Ramsey, what do you think of university education ? This video reminds me of the watering down of university education so not to offend anyone. For example I have professors in science who question climate change and get students protesting and trying to shut them down. Kinda crazy! that's why I like BJJ, when you roll you can't hide the truth.

Interesting question. I’ll have to mull that one over.

Hi Ramsey could you make more videos like this? I think you would be doing a great service if you preached more. I would genuinely enjoy you reading the Bible it would be both educational and soothing. Also maybe a lecture on faith please and thank you kind sir! Also I know I keep asking about the side head speed bag technique but is it a bad technique and isn’t it good for slips? Thank you in advance for your time and consideration

And I still don’t know what you mean by “side of the head” in the context of the speed bag. Do you have a link to a video example?

@@RamseyDewey yes I do :) it’s on two videos I have seen. One I will post the link here and it occurs at 54 seconds kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYvCkpJmZ7ema6M it’s a video of Roberto Duran, and the other example I seen on the punch professor.

I dont use profanity as a general rule. On occasion when mad or high emotions I might drop a bad word. Anyone that knows me would know that I am really mad or upset if I start cussing.

Did you swear as a child? I did and will now only to denote strong emotion. It is the equivalent of the emoji. Most use emotional expression to circumvent information. I respect you don't force what you know on us in the guise of emotional hostility.

I'm probably going to regret asking this but do you have some kind of reason why you think that the book was banned because of racism?

I mean, when you think about it from that perspective (which is the perspective I take) then every word is meaningless. Just a sound that some ape made to assign meaning to what it was perceiving. Over thousands of years, that evolved into the many convoluted languages that humanity speaks. I would say that math is the ultimate form of communication that humans possess. That being said I am an aspiring comedian, and many of the greats swore their asses off.
