I've actually not had much trouble cleaning wool trousers. I usually clean them in a bathtub using shampoo without conditioner. If I get grease in them, some times I'll clean them in kerosene or aviation gasoline, and then wash them well with soap and water. I wear a lot of wool clothing, and much of it is actually machine washable as well, although it won't clean it as well as hand washing.
