As a high school teen, I worked after school in the capacity of strip maintenance for Steve at Lion's Drag Strip from 1970 to closing of the strip. I loved to see him make those radio commercials and announcements from the tower. Got to help lots of the famous drivers during pre-show practice sessions. Steve looked like a star even then and his voice when just saying "Hello Al" was awesome to hear!

Correction: I believe my tenure at Lions was 1972 until closing. Sorry, but I was a teen then and now am 66!

My friends and I are in our late 50s. In the 70s as teens in high school, we bought classic muscle cars when they were mostly just "cool used cars". I ran my first track ¼ mile at 16. We still drag race today, driving cars from my 440 6bbl Roadrunner, my wife's 65 421 TriPower GTO, to my friend's SRT HEMI powered Jeep and another friend's 2005 Vette, w/supercharger. All American guys, still tearin' up the 1320.

YOU ARE AWESOME! Thank you so much for posting this!!! I grew-up going to the drags (Lions, Irwindale, OCIR) with elder siblings... living near Edinger Ave. in Huntington Beach, CA is the next best thing to "Being There" -- every day you can hear gearheads blasting down an otherwise busy street, and here and there somebody always opening-up their muscle cars as my wife and I both yell "SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!" (And I just heard somebody going W.F.O. down Edinger Ave. while typing this!)☮

Bryan, there's a CD of this on eBay as of this writing. The item number is 163172244566. If you paste it into the eBay search bar it'll take you right to it. (and no, I'm not the seller)

When we text about going to the racetrack, I text: RF HR (that's "Race Fans Hot Rodders") and the reply is CoAA (that's "Children of All Ages") usually followed by "SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY" LOL. Still kids at heart. We just happen to be going to the track tomorrow

Jungle and Pam were visiting at the house one time and he was getting fairly "tuned up" and proceeded to tell me that "Charlie, you're the best fuckin' drag racing announcer . . . " Why? "You're the only one who says my name right (libberman and not leeberman) . . . I'm German . . . I ain't no fuckin' Jew!" After all, it _is_ spelled Liberman and not Lieberman.

The directions to the locations were just as thrashed as the bodies of the commercials... " Take Exit-81 off Highway-72 and you're THERE, at the Mother Cabrini Shrine! Then go North on Loudermilk, then South to CRIPPLE CREEK... !

True story: I was on the pit side on the N.H.R.A. Winternationals in Pomona, California many years ago. At a time out on the track between races I was scheduled to do a fun simulated comedy wheel stand race/exhibition. I had noticed several cameras were filming this once in a life moment for my self. Afterword's I was in the area of Steve Evans broadcast booth / trailer was. At the moment he was not broadcasting. I approached him and cordially introduced my self and asked him as to were I would go or who would I speak about possibly getting a video copy or footage of what I performed out on the strip. He looked at me in complete disdain and told me "I HAVE NO IDEA OF WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU WANT GET OUT OF HERE AND LEAVE ME ALONE'.' I had heard of his temper and that he could be a real jerk and a self centered self serving egotistical s.o.b. After that moment I spent with Steve Evans all I can say is so true so true. That day I lost all respect for this dude. I always heard how fame and fortune does this to people but when you see it in person its a memory one never forgets. And to see all these comments about how great he was. A reply of I'm not sure ask someone over there or something like that would have been just fine but to in person witness that instantaneous flash of rage is nothing less then disrespectful and unjustified. If these fine you tube viewers saw and heard what I did I don't believe there would be all of these compliments for this A Hole. I'm just keeping it real. Enough said, Skip

They should do new medication commercials this way. The guy could rattle off side effects with echo. Itching! Drowsiness! Nosebleeds! Severe rashes!
