I happened to notice your comment and just randomly thought I'd share but you may want to consider trying salted baits at least as a backup. You can save alot of money, waste, and frustration...especially if you are re-baiting for yourself and others. Plus it could be something else you and your son enjoy together. You can use any soft body animal from the sea but shrimp and squid have been what I've used most. You can shell fresh to almost about to spoil shrimp, let it sit in Kosher salt for 3 days and now have a bait that's 10x stronger on the hook, easier to handle as far as no smell or mess, doesn't need refrigeration and when the birds catch you slipping...they usually drop it a time or 2 bc the extra salt surprise which can be quite funny and you keep your shrimp. If I have to walk way out to cast I'll cut a few pieces for the shirt pocket so if I get cleaned I can avoid the walk back to the cooler. I wouldn't recommend that with fresh bait of any kind! Also if you don't fish very often it keeps forever on a shelf in the garage so it's one less thing to rebuy when you head out. Hope this was a interesting read if nothing else, I know if I were helping teach a kid to fish the simpler the better. I can remember growing up when my dad and I discovered or learned something together it was all the more special, even if sometimes he was just acting and wanted to have a laugh at my expense lol!

Here's a Pro-Tip (you're gonna thank me for later): When tying this type of "improved clinch knot" using *MONOFILAMENT* line (*specifically*) you can use some saliva/spit (this is usually the most convenient) or anything wet really, such as water, to lubricate your line on the bit you just twisted before cinching your knot down, as shown @ 2:20 --this will help prevent the mono from stretching and warping, which will ultimately improve the strength of your line and help reduce break-offs. I believe this phenomena is sometimes referred to as 'Mono Burn' or something like that, but you can test it and see for yourself by tying one each way and looking at how disfigured your line becomes with no lubricant. I promise you will notice a difference, you can even feel the mono heat up after you cinch it down -go ahead and grab the knot and it will be super hot to the touch! That heat is why you need to be careful and try to avoid by keeping your line cool with lubricant and going S L O W when cinching the knot down. I'm always sure to add in this little detail when tying this knot once I figured out what all was going on. It just makes sense, and it really does help improve the overall strength of your rig and help you land more fish!!! ✔✔✔✌😎👍✔✔✔ cheers, -Fred

A little background on what may make this spot productive. If you look to the right, you may see that the waves cease to churn at a certain point. This indicates a cut in the sand that predatory pelagic fish use to herd bait fish. You may also notice that the waves break further out than they should. This indicates a trough between the first break and the break closer to shore. Troughs are essentially fish highways. This area seems riddled with sandbars and many other forms of interesting soft bottom structure. Fish cruise the void for days on end seeing nothing. Any structure interests them. When getting skunked, casting into a cut or trough may change things dramatically. However, you generally want to cast past the trough and let your lure/bait enter the area as living bait would.

Jeff Excellent beginner's tutorial. One edit I would make is the part where you tie the knot. I was always told when I was about ten (now 70+) and everyone I know agrees that you never pull that knot tight without lubricating it. Saliva, water, anything that will cut down the tremendous amount of heat generated when mono slides over mono (same applies to braid) getting increasingly tight and does not permit the knot to fully seat. Failure to follow this simple rule will reduce your knot strength by up to an additional 80% and many knots reduce the line strength just by their nature. (Yes I saw on Google that a Dupont engineer debunks this but that is refuted by numerous guides and others that get paid for putting fish in the boat!) I was really nervous when Kristi took her swim. No rod and reel is worth going fully clothed in cold water. Glad it turned out well and everyone had a laugh. (You saw how concerned the marine police were. They deal with the bad things that happen under similar circumstances.) Wish I had been around for your "tournament."

That’s not an improved clinch. That’s just a standard clinch knot. You needed to go through that final loop you created at the end before pulling tight. Also, always lubricate the knot with some water or spit to prevent abrasion and assist with tightening it. If this is a 101 or beginners video then mention of fishing line type (braid, mono, floro) and lb test is good. Size of rod, rod action, or reel type info might help too. Great job getting out there and fishing and enjoying the waters though!

Enjoyed the video but that is a standard Clinch knot and it does do better if you get it wet before cinching. The Improved Clinch Knot requires one more step. After putting the tag end through the loop at the hook eye you put the tag end back through a loop you just created by doing that. Then you wet the knot cinch it by pulling on the Standing end.

Thank you for your video. Our 11 yr old grandson is in love with fishing. We rented a house on the beach in Indialantic, FL, and want to give it a try. Could you list the try of rod I need to buy and the supplies? It looks like fun. I'll give it a try too!

This is trash. This guy is an armature who doesn't know anything. Look up surfing In Florida. You'll learn how to really surf fish and catch big fish and actually learn how to read the surf and know where to fish and proper rigs and bait to use

A man of your knowledge I trust. I am about to go on my first saltwater fishing trip in September. Wanting to catch a shark is what I’m hoping and afraid to have to small of gear to handle a bigger one if it bites on. What rod/reel/line/ and bait would you suggest?

I really appreciate the effort that went into the making of the video. However, this video is not a REAL beginner's video. - What to do when I catch a fish? - What are my easy options of storing a fish once I catch it? I'd say a video where you show a process of catching a fish and showing all the steps from start to finish when the fish safely in a container would be really helpful!

I'm in Florida just seeing this now. is it pretty much the same tactics down here? Right now I'm talking about Northern Florida, thinking about moving down farther south into Southern Florida in the near future. The other thing was I saw that you used blood worms for bait for a lot of what you're doing in North Carolina. As far as bait is considered around here and in the southern part of Florida, I've never heard them say anything about blood worms. I do have an understanding of them and how good they are in the northern states. I've used them in the past when I lived up north inPennsylvania and would frequent the Jersey Shore for fishing. One more quick question, you referred to a fish called a spot. what kind of fish is that? I don't think I've ever heard of it. I wouldn't be asking if I wasn't a newbie myself here for anything, that's why I'm asking you these kinds of questions. Thank you for all you do. Keep up the explanation for us dummies!

I got a $60ish rod and reel combo last year and used it with a whiting rig, same idea as the rig in this video but all fishing line no metal wire, when I was on Hatteras Island. Caught some sea mullet and spot with it using artificial blood-worms. I would think you'd need more for going after something like Drum but it was fun for me and they were good eating.

I believe that is the simple clinch knot not the "improved" which requires running the tag end through the second loop made by running it through the first loop.

@@jeghaszesrrez9174 yes a hook in the mouth is one thing, but dragging fish along the sand rubs their scales off and removes the natural slime on their body. Not to mention potential internal damage. A safe handled release helps to ensure the fish will live once it goes back into the water.
