I preordered Depression Cherry the day Subpop put it up without hearing a single song. I felt confident. Beach House has a good sound. Each album is a marked progression from their previous. Beach House is consistent. I was not expecting this. This is fucking awesome.

Devotion is my favorite Beach House record. Just classic after classic after classic. Wedding Bell, Gila, Heart of Chambers, YOU CAME TO ME?!!! Holy Dances, and that beautiful majestic Daniel Johnston cover of Something’s Last a Long Time. God damn that album is good. Same with their self titled/debut album, Salt Water, Masters Of None, and House On The Hill? Delicious It’s been strange to see Beach Houses later stuff get much more attention than their earlier records, I can see why, since their earlier stuff was like 100% pure dream pop, and their later stuff is much more palpable to a wider audiences tastes. I just hope they know how much their music had meant to so many of us. It pains me to think they don’t. I’m about 99% sure my kid was conceived while listening to their music... since it’s the eternal _go to music_ for such activities.

I’ve played drums to this song like 2 times a week for the last 6 years, and I just realized I’ve never heard this song without drumming to it. This is such a lovely tune, the middle section gets me every time, that swaying loop back in to the chorus that repeats over and over. So good. I'm not gonna lie, this song took the longest to click with me. While I was listening through Depression Cherry up and down, constantly changing my favourite song, I always sort of avoided this song. I think I wasn't in the right mindset at that time. Then yesterday I was in a mood and had listened through all the other songs I already loved to bits and Sparks came on. I was about to put my headphones down, but I heard it faintly playing and I decided to leave my nonsense behind and give it a go. And boy did I regret avoiding this song. It sounds like raw hope, rough but true. I think I needed to hear it at that exact point of time. If I wasn't confident before, I can now say that this album is 100% perfection to me.

Damn. Listen closely to the beginning vocals of this sing and then do the same for the MBV song. The melody is so similar. I grew up with all the original shoegaze and dream pop bands of the late 80s and early to mid-90s. So many great memories, especially the live shows. I'm 52 now but I think Beach House, particularly this album, are absolutely amazing. It's obvious that they were heavily influenced by the original shoegaze bands. But they're not just some retro band copying that style. Beach House are totally original, exciting and totally of the present, not the past.
