Beach Mug Rugs, Take 2

Things were just not going well this day. In this project I try to improve on my first attempt to make beach themed mug rugs. It didn't start well, but I hope you stick with me as a follow this dyeing and weaving project to completion!
These mug rugs were dyed with ProChem acid dyes on Brigg"s & Little Heritage wool and woven on my Ashford 10" Samplit Rigid Heddle loom.

Yea, Kari!!! These turned out beautiful. I am happy that you kept at the project to get exactly what you were after. The mug rugs will definitely soak up whatever liquid they come in contact with. I was shocked at our Thanksgiving dinner when my special felted v-e-r-y large potholder ended up in the turkey juice as to actually HOW MUCH liquid it held! LOL

This is a nice colourway which really lets one think of beach. The white speckles look like seafoam. To make sure, you dont have too much dyepowder for the amount of wool, you need to measure out the right amount of the pecentage of coverage you want on the yarn, so it absorbs all the dye. It also might be necessary to do a two step dye process, so the colours dont mix on the yarn in an unwanted way. I like the loom. Makes me want to upgrade from the tapestry loom, I inherited from a friend, because she wanted to throw it out and I had no loom at all, so wanted to restore it and use it. I am so new to weaving with a heddle, that I need to learn a lot. I still have to build a warping board, so far I clamp the bars to chair and table stood apart for as long as I want the warp to be.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the colourway. Yes, I know about measuring out dyes and figuring percentage. A very small amount of dye powder is needed for just one skein, too little for my scale, so I usually go by feel in that case. The amount was correct, but the absorption was abnormally slow. I talked to another dyer who mentioned she uses Briggs and Little a lot and she has found she needs to scour it quite vigorously to remove spinning oils. So I have a feeling those oils were interfering with the absorption. I will scour my next skeins and see how it goes. Best wishes to you in your weaving adventures!
