Serrations are pretty much better for hard use against most things, except for wood, which is unfortunately a large part of knife use I guess. I have a fully serrated Delica which demolished rope, card, plastic and even tin and other light metals. Its just when you want precise cuts they start to choke a bit. Or, against wood.

For chopping, splitting or carving tasks yes but for survival tasks it can work great. You can shave the side of a stick to create several little feather sticks all at once, great for making tinder actually better and easier than a plain edge knife

I’ve used my Atlantic Salt while working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico for over 10 years now for cutting rope, lines, and debris from the impellers on our pumps and to this day it’s still a dream to use. Other than the black coating eventually wearing off from the belt clip… it doesn’t rust, is very sharp, is lightweightI, is durable, and get’s the job done. I highly recommend it if you’re out on the water and need a good utilitarian knife.

Those of you who prefer to always carry a plain edge: have you ever attempted to cut a wet rope, large cable-ties, thoroughly butcher a deer (cutting through cartillage, tendons, etc.), cut baling wire (that has gotten wrapped around a cow's leg), or cut your way out of a tall briar patch (where wounded deer always seem to locate themselves)? I've done all of these with my Benchmade Griptilian combo-edge- and it's never failed me yet. And I totally reject the thought that it is more difficult to sharpen. Have you heard of a diamond rod?? I sharpen the plain-edge part of my knives with a Lansky System, hit the serrations with a diamond rod (if needed), and then strop the plain-edge part. It takes me no more than 10-15 minutes per blade.

To answer your question, no, I don't deal with those things on a normal basis so for EDC it wouldn't make sense for me. If that's something you run into 90% of your days then obviously your knife seems to work well for you.

Good video. I've never been a fan of serrated knives, but your video, especially that demonstration, has opened my mind the the prospect of getting a serrated knife. I think the "fully" serrated edge makes that Spyderco a winner, compared to most partially serrated folders.

I'm glad that I went back to this video and realized that you were being sarcastic. Because I, too, believe that in many respects, for most people, straight blades are more popular for many people..... but when it comes to cutting power overall, the serrated knife cannot be beat. Once you have learned how to sharpen one, you will be a fan. When it comes to material being cut, speed of cuts, depth of cut, and overall cutting power, serrated knives are in a league of their own. I, too, was a straight bladed knife fan until I realized the power of a serrated knife. There is a reason why the Ginsu/type knife is so popular!

That video is a terrific demonstration and I like that the video focuses on capabilities of the design and materials, not so much colors or badass silhouette. Some excellent knives are sexy, some plain knives are excellent and sexy for their own reasons lolThe way that blade handled the tomato after cutting all the tough stuff was very impressive

serrated knifes have more cutting power than plain edge knifes ! i love plain edge blades but it wont cut through material like serrated knifes !

don't like them, because there is not much options for the edge... with plain edge, you can polish it, or make it with micro serations at any grit you want, put microbevel on polished edge, reprofile to any angle you want

I have to agree. People say you can sharpen them on rocks but you'd have to be darn well practiced to sharpen a standard fine edge on a normal stone. Scandi grind wouldnt be difficult but serrated would be miles easier to keep. I guess I never need serrations in my life but they are mega useful for divers and anything around wire or line.

If you work on any type of commercial vessel - anything BUT serrated is Overrated. You just dont understand its uses. When you have to cut 4" line in ten seconds- you need serrated.

i added serrations on 2 plain ede folding knifes, a cheap 404c and D2 otf (replica). both are way better now, i can even cut 2-3 cm branches. thats around 1 inch. id like to buy a Spyderco Endela serrated. im wondering if it is stong enough to cut small branches. a big problem with spyderco serration is that i must buy spyderco ceramic triangle. for what i own now my tools are more then enough. those small serrations on Spyderco looks very hard to sharpen without a truangle shaped ceramic rod.

Really, I think most of us don't care at all if you were being sarcastic. We don't come here for that, but we DO come here for facts/observations. My observation about serrated knife edges is based on direct experience where I prevented two very expensive yachts from being smashed to smithereens against a rocky seacoast and both crews possibly being murderized by the crashes during a coastal storm. Both vessels were anchored offshore in a bay when a huge blow suddently came up generating large steep waves that caused the vessel closest to the open ocean to drag backwards because it's anchor would no longer hold. The anchor in fact could not even be withdrawn because it had become entangled in rocks on the bottom, or other old anchor chains and rodes lost during previous storms. I had about 10 seconds to cut through the vessel anchor rode to allow it to power away from the vessel behind to prevent a collision that would send both to destruction on the rocks. Without my serrated pocket folder, I wouldn't have been able to saw through the 2 inch thick anchor rope allowing the front vessel to escape. So, without the slightest bit of sarcasm intended, that serrated blade saved a lot of lives and serious, expensive damage. I will never have another knife on me completely without serrations.

I am going to get a combo knife for edc because I can cut rope need be, or bushcraft if need be. Thanks again bro

Serrations tend to be an all or none deal. Either you love them or you hate them. Either you have a fully serrated blade or none at all. Partial serrations are garbage. You lose the most used cutting edge on your knife and the serration section is too small to do any serious cutting with. The serrated blade on my leatherman surge is gets used a lot because it is long enough to do the tasks it excels at. That little 2 inch section you see on most blades is not enough.

The partial serrations get the tough cuts started then the plain part of the blade runs thru it smoothly the rest of way...so in my opinion a partially serrated knife is great!!!

dude you can call partial serrated garbage if you want but it's been great for me at work for over 15 years because sometimes I need the benefits of both for different task and don't have to carry 2 knives. having a little less cutting edge of each to have both hasn't been a problem for me and I used to carry a full plain edge.

Thinking about getting a serrated edge spyderco ARK, so I have a full serrated edge always on hand in case I need to cut through some dense material like rope or (just in case) seatbelt! Straight edges and serrations both have their advantages, so why not have both by carrying two knives?

I don’t get it? People talking about how good it will be for food or wood. It’s a rescue knife for cutting rope or webbing to save your ass. Why don’t you just bring a 5” fixed blade non serrated knife for camp craft and food prep. It reminds me of a guy I saw trying to fix a customers fridge with a spoon and a fork because he was too lazy to carry his tools in.

can someone recommend me some good fully serrated knife? I am looking for something like a dagger, not a knife that opens and closes. double fully serrated dagger would be the best, but I haven't seen anything like that so far. any recommendations?

That type of knife would be pretty uncommon. Microtech might have something like that though. If your plan is to use it for self defense I would probably caution against it. Serrations can slash well but they can also get hung up on certain materials when penetrating. If it's not cutting it's snagging. Sharpened straight edges would provide less resistance on a stab and subsequent removal of the blade from the target. If you're doing a serrated edge on a dagger I'd recommend only 1 side. I'm not an expert... Just speaking from my limited experience.

I love the h1 steel I carry dragonfly serrated been carrying and using it for a year and it does feel like its work hardening I use it to cut bait mackerel pogies squid never rusts even a little.and serrations are easier to sharpen than plain all you have to do is run the flat side on a rod or stone a few times never have to even touch. the scalloped or serration part at all great knife great video thanks

my Victorinox SwissTool Plus lack a serrated blade. i dont care much about sharpening the plain edge blade on it, i got 2 very good light sharpening tools and i can resharpen it very fast. Victorinox blades are very good at almost any task excepting cuting ropes, especially treated hempen ropes. i love serrated knifes, i transformed 2 plain drop point folding knifes into tanto and serrated. but the results are only mediocre. so i ordered a Endura 4 Lightweight fully serrated. another problem on my Victorinox multitool is that it takes 2 hands to open, so it cant be used in self defense fast, maybe only as a good piece of metal 😀. what can you say about spyderco serrated knifes, the blade is strong? i heard VG10 is like D2, and my D2 is very tough, and hard to sharpen.

I thought they sucked too... then this past spring I watched a friend cut through a 15" wide, 1/4" thick piece of conveyor belt (used as an arrow safety stop) with ease using his serrated knife. Changed my opinion on them as I knew I could not have done that with my plain edged knife. I still don't have a serrated knife but I don't dislike them like I used to either.

In many ways sirations are too good, too hands off. You lose the joy of touching up and stropping the blade. You lose on food prep and carving as well. I have a fully seratrd Mora and it's like a light sabre cutting, so I understand the appeal.

I thought they sucked also..'til I stopped by the "think shop" and got my thinkin' fixed. I started carryin' one 20+ yrs. ago and never went back, for a daily carry anyhow. Fixed blade hunting knives are standard blade for me. I sharpen most of my knives, but am not ashamed and it's not expensive to have a pro do it if you just can't get that factory edge. So I’m really confused, everyone I know says serrated has limited uses, unless for certain uses, materials, ropes and zip ties. Other than that it goes blunt quicker, harder to sharpen, the teeth get choked up with material. Is serrated better as a defensive option? If serrated is a better option why doesn’t all manufacturers offer it as an option? Then what about Kris blades both fine edge and serrated why are they good for?

Most people that carry knives dont like serrations is because they cant sharpen them. They only want to sharpen an easy straight blade.. Plain edges are called plain for a reason, cause serrations give edges character and a style that works.

Anything man made Serrated knives go through like butter and a chainsaw. Thick Boxes, rope, seat belts, material of any kind really, plastics etc etc. That includes for self-defense slashing of arms, hands, legs, necks, whatever it is devastating. Like you said if you get a good sharpening system it's great and it will work long after plain edge knives turn to useless butter knives. Plain edge is better for wood work and bush craft. Cleaning game to include fish. And regular and outdoor food prep over all.

Personally having used knives for the last 19 years, having one on me almost always... I'll tell you this. Dull knives are more deadly, because they are less predictable. Serrated knives are good for steaks, maybe cutting insulation, they are good at cutting rope (as in a sailor). Now with that being said they are harder to sharpen. And most knives (looking at you truck stop folders) that have serrations, use them RIGHT in the prime cutting area (first 2 inches of blade). So when it comes to cutting sticks into tent stakes, making a walking stick or spear, or any other task, I don't want dull serrations messing up my day Just my opinion. If I were to carry a serrated knife, it would be a 6 inch dagger with a spear point geometry and serrations on one side. But I much prefer having a saw back, so theres that haha

those groves are far from a regular serrated knife. i can almost see the edge down the knife and the groves almost start after the edge. also there are different sizes as well. that individual style knife is good but far from a normal serrated knife as well as most knives that have half serration. that knife there is extremely interesting and looks like noy only a combat improvement but for many tasks an improvement as well. the sharpener is a pencil lime rod and not hard but tedious. true you wont have to sharpen as much. my conflict in my head is do i really need the serration on the bottom of my folder and field knife. i bring a sharpener and they make em the size of a quarter now. no excuse to not have one. so i cant use the reason well if the main edge goes dull i have smaller edges to work with. only other reason is for combat with thrust it may go deeper but. normal serrated i would say no. that unique knife serration you have there may be a good idea though. very cool knife thank you for shares. i wish it had a better handle but oh well. its utillity knife.

To me serrated blade is more like a dosposable one. Once it's dull it's pretty much useless. The time it takes to sharpen it to a factory edge is not worth it.

+holynex Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I do disagree, based on the serrated knives I have sharpened. You can even sharpen many the same way you would sharpen a straight edge on a Spyderco Sharpmaker (using the pointed portion of the ceramic), gets them back to pretty damn sharp quickly. But it take s a bit more precision is all. take care

+beactivelife Well, I have only wet stones and I know how to use them. Buying additional equipment just to perform mediocre sharpening task on serrated knives is something I'm definitely not willing to do. To sharpen serrated edges you not only need pointed portion of the ceramic, but a round sharpening rod that has exactly the the shape of the hollow portion of your serrated blade as well. We didn't even get to the removing burr part of sharpening yet.

To sharpen serrations, I bought a cheap ceramic knife and I use the spine which has a 90 degree angle. I insert the spine of the ceramic knife into each individual serration at the bevel angle of the steel edge and just scrape back and forth several times per serration. That works for me. I've used bread knives (which are serrated) to cut through bone (pig head) with no problem. Try doing that with a plain edge.
