I almost earned a Darwin Award. It was summer of 2001 in Oklahoma, I was 19, on my own, I lived alone in an apartment, I had aluminum taped over my windows to block out heat and light since I worked graveyard at the time. I was struck by the desire to own a white pair of JNCO jeans, but at the time either I had no money or they didn't exist so I decided to make my own. I took a pair and threw in a bathtub with bleach and laundry detergent to clean the jeans as they bleached and left it to sit for an hour or so until I started feeling overwhelmingly sick. Being a poor and naive 19 year old I decided to call my friends over, rather than call an ambulance. They arrived, had a good laugh a my expense, helped me clean up and air out my apartment while taking me back to their place for well being observation and detoxification from my self inflicted ignorance. Fun times.

I almost got a Darwin Award in 2008. I was with a friend on a farm and had used a pitchfork to pick up some hay. I stupidly was holding the pitchfork with the teeth up while carrying, tripped over a rock, and rather than pierce my neck, pierced my left arm and ruined the whole summer.

The stupid thing is that it is a requirement to CARRY lifejackets on a motorboat but not to WEAR them. There are perhaps 50 drownings every year from people taking small boats out into inclement conditions. The boat flips and the occupants can't get to the lifejackets. So they drown. It is so common that I cannot understand why it isn't compulsory to WEAR the jackets.

3:12 This reminds me of two stories. The first is about a teacher of mine. When he was young, he suffered stomach ulcers. However, this was not the initial diagnosis he received, leading him to eat very little despite being a hungry teenager. The only thing that actually (although temporarily) soothed him was ice cold water, so indulged profusely in water. Until he threw up black (blood altered by gastric acid) and got proper treatment. The second is a case study from my university classes. A man showed up at the ER with two main issues: dizzy spells and a big toothache. The nurse has been told only of the former. The man was in a concerning state of malnutrition. After some digging, the hospital staff learned of the toothache and everything became clearer. The man didn't want to go to the dentist to have his tooth checked out so (like my teacher) he went to cold water for soothing. He also avoided solid food he would need to chew in order to spare his tooth. Result: he drained a lot of nutrients, vitamins, salts, minerals from his body.

I don't have a "death" Darwin award but I have a time when I was a Police clerk taking an accident report. A man and his girlfriend came in to make the report and she was clearly Asian or Filipino by her accent. Instead of asking for address information I would routinely ask for the person's driver's license to take it from there. The man gave me a driver's license that clearly was not his. I asked him who's driver's license had he given me. He told me that he and the person he had the accident with traded information (by giving up each other's drivers license). I told him that he was now driving without a license. The memorable part was the girlfriend hitting him repeatedly on the shoulder saying, "You stupid!" (in the cutest accent😂)

The first one happened here recently as well... It was a 16 year old that fell asleep in an industrial bin and dumped into the truck and crushed... It was horrific... We also had an accident happen up the road from us similar to be one in a later video in this series... The guy was on a motorcycle and trying to outrun police and took a roundabout too fast, went over the metal barrier and the edge of it cut his leg off and he died in hospital the same day

After self administration of some shock treatment, I came too across the other side of the room, with Mum fussing over me, and Dad at the fuse box repairing the fuse. 5:40 - in the 80's when I was in elementary school, we were riding the bus home from school one day in the beginning of June. The weather was nice and warm and we had the majority of the windows down. A girl who I will not name, who had long and beautiful flowing hair had her head out of the bus window at her seat and her hair was flowing in the breeze outside of the bus. Well the bus driver saw this, came over the PA and told her to get her head and hair back inside the bus AT ONCE. She complied and the bus continued it's route. Not 5 miles later we were on a dirt road heading to a students home. The road was very rural and unkept with lots of pot holes and trees with their branches overhanging the road... Well... Little miss long hair put her head back out the window, hair flowing in the wind and wouldn't you know... We drove past a low hanging tree, it's branches scraping the bus, and her hair got wrapped around a giant branch and... Well... She got yolked up, damn near pulled out of the window, and 75% of her hair ripped right out of her scalp.. She lost part of her scalp and was knocked out cold... She almost died! Her neck was broken but she survived. Her family tried to sue but seeing as we went to a private school we had two cameras and audio recording of every bus route. Her parents blamed the bus driver for their child's actions, even after their child was corrected and their inappropriate and dangerous behavior was confronted. It was quite the site to see little miss snob knocked out cold, limp as a boned fish, looking like a 55 year old man with male patterned baldness and a bleeding scalp. She was exceptionally humble after this event, and became a missionary in South America. Good story!

I was stationed in Saudi for a while. My replacement from the same unit in Arizona arrived clutching a large water bottle. She heard all that nonsense about having to drink 2 or more gallons of water a day. Truth is: Drink when you are thirsty. I had zero problems while I was there. In the end she had to be evacuated and hospitalized for water poisoning (washing out your electrolytes in the body). We came from a hot desert in the states where she had no problems to a somewhat hotter desert where she lost her mind. As for the plague, I had the two shot plague series. I have had dozens of injections. These were the most uncomfortable by a wide margin. My shoulder hurt for 2 weeks after each one. As for the reason, there was an outbreak of plague in prairie dogs in the area I was stationed.

Honestly I'm having a hard time believing the one about the drive-thru. Of course I have not been to every drive through in the country but I have never seen a drive through with a tree on the driver's side of the car that this type of accident could happen. Maybe if it trapped him against the order taking station, but it's kind of hard to believe that there was a tree on that side of the car near enough that order window that would have caused this.

People die in dumpsters more than you'd think. I worked a "homicide" investigation at the dump. In summer. In Phoenix. Turns out Chief Yellowbird had too much fire water and passed out in a dumpster, which contained a couch. We initially thought he was murdered and dumped, but he was just crushed to death in the back of the garbage truck. A bird shit on my co-workers head (very pretty blonde) during the investigation. She talked about it for years after, hilarious.

There was a 19 year old kid who was a new employee of a tree cutting business. One day the wood chipper got jammed with a log so the kid got on top of the machine to dislodge the log with his foot. He ended up displacing the log with his foot and it wasn't until his body had been halfway ground up by the machine before the other workers were able to turn it off. This happened only a few blocks from my apartment, oddly enough a similar incident happened, also in my neighborhood, several years before to a middle aged man. My mom heard about the first account on her way home. When she told me I'd immediately gotten that scene in Fargo, when Peter Stormare's character stuffed his partner in the wood chipper. So disturbing, SMH.

I remember a hunter in Nebraska that contracted bubonic plague on a hunting trip in Wyoming. He shot a bobcat and apparently it was infected and passed it on to the hunter.
