People were warning about it for years but they were ignored. The whole thing was, and probably still is, a cult. Her followers were taken and in most cases were those who couldn't afford to lose money. The BBC did an extensive investigation about it several years ago. Worth a watch

This is such a fascinating story! This was likely was more successful of a scam than they initially thought it would be. It capitalized on the excitement and urgency to buy crypto and the lack of knowledge that many people have about it at just the right time. I believe Ruja was found guilty of some type of real estate fraud with her father in the past and also tried to start another crypto currency that was not successful before this one. I hope she is found one day!

I did the books for a company whose investors had been bilked into investing about 6 million by the CEO on a non-realistic business plan. When i figured it out i informed the investors. The CEO was fired (though he had used much of the money for personal uses), and i was made CEO in the hopes of rescuing the business plan. Long story short, i was CEO for 4 yrs but it became evident there was no way the business plan could work no matter how much effort or tweaking of it (i left as the stress was just too much) However, in the end i managed to liquify $2.5Million which i had invested in real estate (on which we operated two locations), and in the end after real estate was sold along with remaining assets the investors ended up with about $10M but it took another 12 years after i left to get that. All i ended up with was some valuable experience and A LOT of gray hair.
