The College Student Who Stole $7.5M via SIM Swapping | Cowboy Kings of Crypto

Joel Ortiz was arrested at LAX, dressed head to toe in ostentations and gaudy Gucci, as he was about to fly to Europe with $250,000 in cash converted from cryptocurrency that he’d stolen from at least 40 victims a few months earlier to the tune of $7.5 million. Tracked by REACT, a Santa Clara, California cybercrime unit, his irresistible urge to gloat and his over-the-top trail of lavish spending and flaunting of riches on social media made him an easy catch. But how did this one-time high school Valedictorian and Information Technology student at UMass, a kid who grew up in Boston public housing, get here? Was this smart and tech-savvy but socially awkward loner really the mastermind or was he being manipulated by a larger criminal Community?
This episode of Cowboy Kings of Crypto was created in 2022.

What's sad is that you kids isolate one another and make those kids that are walled off, feel like this is what they need to do to gain your friendship. Being nice and talking or treating someone like a human is a weak thing to do, it's the manly thing to do. Doesn't make you his best friend. If Kool kids treated those loners better others would see that and give them a chance as a friend. So many kids are afraid to be friends with others in fear if the repercussions they may receive from their peers.

@@MakeOutWithTJ ive heard stories of the tablet devices that are used do this sim swapping services have been robbed from the phone shops. The sim swappers have roughly 10 minutes or so before getting locked out of the device which is more than enough time for them. If you want to stop these attacks maybe they should put a 48-72 hour delay before the sim service is available for that phone number to use.

It is not that difficult to have a separate phone number for banks/finance that you keep private and dont share with anybody. The lack of basic cybersecurity knowledge in the public baffles me. Take all measures you can to keep your phone number private, may this case be a lesson for everyone.

It is people like him I'm talking about. Also, honestly if someone can't afford 2 phones, no scammer is going to waste his time on them so they can rest easy. A cheap second hand phone which costs less than $50 and the most basic phone plan available should be a worthwhile investment if you have over $100,000 in savings like the guys in the video.

SIM swapping is a social engineering exploit. The weakness is the people, so using a separate phone has the same weakness as there is a human (an employee at company X) who you can convince to give you the phone number, and now you have the exact same problem as in the video. You should be advocating for physical key (ie YubiKey) as a 2FA (instead of a phone) with no way to recover if you don’t have the physical key. You should advocate for a bank or services in general that support physical keys. Bank of America, Google, vanguard, iCloud all support physical keys, but most people don’t know this. This is way more secure than a separate phone. It’s normal and expected for the average person to not know this, since you yourself didn’t know enough about security enough to know having a separate phone is just a band aid over the problem.

To protect yourself from SIM swapping attacks, use multi-factor authentication with a FIPS-compliant hardware security key, which is immune to SMS hijacking and provides security for your accounts and cryptocurrencies. Using any hardware security key for multi-factor authentication can help protect against SIM swapping attacks. FIPS-certified keys are recommended because they meet stringent security standards, offering an additional layer of assurance and reliability.

*Seeing that public defender say…the judge fucked us…it makes you really hate lawyers. Joel participated in a $7.5 mill heist and got a 10 year prison sentence (will likely get out a year early on good behavior so 9 years). Most people would serve a 10 year prison sentence if it meant they’d be $7.5 mill richer afterwards. That’s basically making $800K/year to spend in a prison which beats any working 9 to 5 job. The sheer amount Joel stole, I’d say he’s lucky to be in a country like USA that gives light sentence for white collar crime and theft. Vietnam will issue the death penalty for that kind of theft. Joel did not get fucked, his victims got fucked. His lawyer doesn’t have a clue.*
