Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Remember Beanie Baby Mania? It was INSANE. Everyone thought these things would be worth thousands. And then outta nowhere, Furby showed up and completely changed the game, terrorizing kids and adults alike with those creepy little eyes and phrases. If you’re a 90s kid like me, chances are you had one of these iconic toys. But what if I told you the fads that had our parents duking it out in the Toys “R” Us parking lot ended up being…well, just fads?
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

I was a camp counselor during the tamagotchi craze and my campers used to make me babysit their tamagotchies while they were in the pool. So instead of supervising them while they were swimming I was focused on keeping a dozen tamagotchies alive.

Bailey, I loved the Ty Warner Beanie Babies story. Fun fact I worked at TY in westmont IL from 97 to 2002. My experience down to earth, one of the nicest owners I have ever met. He treated his employees well. We got to buy beanie babies directly which was awesome. In 1998 when he made his 1st billion dollars he gave all his employees a christmas party at a fancy boat cruise in Chicago. Also gave a his employees a bonus worth their yearly salary. And gave them all a billionare beanie babie with a numeric sequence. This was extra special because he knew eventually people would sell it for money. Everyone did. One of the most fun enjoyable companies to be part of during the craze. Thanks for the memories.

You should look into the dark history of McCormick and company. My mom and I were looking at taco seasoning at the store and because of you I thought “I wonder if McCormick has a dark history?”. Allegedly there was a lawsuit filed against them last year due to high levels of toxic metals like lead and arsenic in their seasonings. I’m so intrigued. Thank you for all you do. I love binging your dark history playlist!

i say this so seriously, i had a furby when i was a kid, and it was one that would develop a personality based on how you treat it. genuinely was one of the things that helped teach my little kid brain about empathy and consequences in a safe way that didn’t like affect my real life and didn’t involve me learning from actual embarrassing situations around friends lol

Exactly. My dad married his wife who's my stepmom. My step family which is my dad's wife's family. Anyways my step-grandparents which is my step mom's grandparents. Anyways I saw like back then when I was like maybe 13 or 14 or something like that I came to visit and they still had like these Furby things even though the 90s was over they had the Furbies above their TV stand you know like the old school TV in like one of those TV entertainment cabinets. Anyways the Furbies were creepy and I never liked them. And I thought it was creepy how you could walk by and it would talk to you and I didn't like that. Oh by the way if you care to know I'm at 33 years old now and I'll be 34 on August 17th I was born 1990. That'll give you a time era if you do the math of what year it was when I was like 13 or 14.

I love that you did a Beanie Babies Christmas tree-so did we. My sister and I spent all afternoon decorating it and two days later we changed our minds and put all our regular ornaments back in. We still have photos and it was a lot of fun. I was an avid collector, I had a guide book and every month we’d ask to get another beanie babies. We found rarer ones at yard sales and thrift stores and my mom collected the happy meal Teenie Beanie Babies from McDonald’s and they’re still in their packages. Wish it was still worth something-we could’ve used that money for college. We also had a Furby-it was gray and so creepy, but my grandmother really liked him so we let her have him. After she passed we sold him at a yard sale or donated him-can’t remember.

This one really took me back to my childhood! 😢 ❤ I learned so much about who was really behind the toy scene in the 90s. The 90s was one huge multicoloured adventure for the toy industry, there hadn't been such a toy boom and frenzy before. I mean the 80s also had their beloved toys that people went crazy over but it really all came to a head in the 90s. We were inundated with flashy ads and 90s colours and everyone wanted every new thing. There were Dragon Flyz, Polly Pocket, Slinkys, My Little Pony (had one from the late 80s), TMNT, Barbie, the View Master was from decades before but it was still so popular in the 80s and 90s, not forgetting the brick game❤...I had a tamagotchi and when I left it at home and it died I cried for days. 😢 thanks for this episode Bailey❤

I had over 450 Beanie Babies back in the day. I had them arranged neatly on shelves around 3 walls of my sewing room. I thought I was racking up my retirement $$$ from reading that catalog on what they were worth. Then I started seeing bins of them for sale at bazaars and thrift shops for $1 apiece and my vision collapsed! I eventually donated most of them to Make A Wish, but I still have a few of my favorites! Now I see them everywhere again and I’m sorely tempted to buy more, but those big Google eyes bother me, so I’ve managed to hold myself back - except for the little blue baby dinosaur… he’s sooo cute!!

I remember when Cabbage Patch Kids first came out in the 80s. I always wanted one and was low key devastated when my parents got me a Christmas Patch Kid (a knock off) instead. “You never got me a cabbage patch kid” became an inside joke as I got older between my mum and I. Then on my 40th birthday my dad got me one. 😂

We couldn't afford one either, but you could buy doll heads that looked exactly like the cabbage patch kids heads. My mom is an amazing seamstress, so she just made them for me. I had three - a little red headed girl, a brunette girl, and a little blonde boy. She made many outfits for them. I even had matching outfits with them. They were well loved!

I was born in 83 and I was absolutely obsessed with Rainbow Brite dolls, the big Cricket doll, my micro bake and my Lite Brite!! I loved those toys and I have so many cute pictures of me on the Christmases that I got them. Last Christmas I actually found a new model Lite Brite. I was so pumped I bought 3 extra boxes of lite Brite pegs hoping I could bribe my 12 year old son to play with me. But that was a no go. So I just played with it by myself between cooking turkey dinner and cleaning up all the Christmas mess that comes with 3 sons. Yes I'm 40 but who wouldn't want to play with one of their favorite childhood toys?? So yeah, I guess you could say I bought it for myself 😂 I'm loving this episode Bailey!!

A HUGE beanie babies collection, tamagochi, SEVERAL furby & nearly 100 Keychain furbys that came in happy meals. They lined across my bike handles. My mom used to get So many of furbies for me & my sister. I learned the hard way that they Never shut up, they talk to each other if they're close & those eyes haunt you lol. I'd have to take the batteries out & turn them around just so i could sleep, I was sure they could still do things without the batteries. I was happy to see em go, I love to have a tamagochi & some of my beanie babies again tho
