There is a big difference between a nuance bear and a wild bear. A wild bear will readily take off from a human with a yell or a whistle. A nuance bear isn't afraid of a human which creates a dangerous situation for the human. You did the right thing Shawn. If you want to be safe the bear had to go or it would have been just a matter of time before someone or Cali got hurt.

Shawn just wanted to say that I love your videos, and what you are doing with the new property! The idea of putting a basement under your new cabin is a great idea, and will come in handy for storage and a root cellar. I am sure you get thousands of suggestions, so I thought I would throw in my 2 cents worth. I know you are going to build another outdoor kitchen, but this time I would add it to your cabin. I would build the cabin with a large covered porch and at the far end of the porch build your outdoor cabin, so that when you use it in bad weather, or in the winter, or the summer, you will have access to it without being snowed on or rained on. You will also have a nice area where your family and you can sit while cooking outdoors! Good luck with your build Shawn, and keep the awesome videos coming!

I had a bear follow me back to my vehicle in Colorado a few years back. I knew that he was watching me. I had walked up a slope right by his den only 4 or 5 feet away. He was in there too. I took pictures in a 360 degree pattern hoping to get a glimpse of him, but he was hiding good. I took a different route to my vehicle and didn't run into him. He followed my scent like a cat would almost on his belly. Scared my wife half to death. She had stayed behind. When she saw the bear all that she could say was, "bbbbear!!!" Take care Shawn. I love the yakisugi technique on the basement beams! I used that technique on some salvaged cedar fence boards for a raised hugelcuture bed I built. I remember one time years ago when my husband and about four other guy's were doing their yearly hunting week. Well on one of those days one of the guys (who was 6'3" tall and about 250 pounds...small earthquake when he hit the ground LOL) tripped and fell over a log backwards and when he looked up there was a not so friendly bear growling and angry. The bear must have been taking a nap yah think? and anyway the bear lost that fight. Fortunately he had won his bear tag in the raffle (in Washington State) and the bear ended up on his family room wall. Sometimes yah gotta do what you gotta do...it was either you or the bear especially if the bear had no fear and was aggressive. Fortunately you are safe Shawn and I am darn sure your family and all of us out here are very happy you did not get hurt. God's blessings to you and the build is looking good.

Good call on the bear. Friendly bears don't end well, they only get more comfortable. To the timber burred in the ground, the membrane is likely a good thing, rot happens when you have wet/dry cycles, so if its just wood and buried in the ground it will stay wet, where as a wall that can get wet then dry out is more likely to end up with rot problems. The membrane will keep the walls on the drier side of things extending the life.

You did the right thing with this Bear. It was obvious to you that this Bear did not fear humans at all and the fact that it was this bold and showed no signs or willingness to go away when opportunity is given shows it was going to be a problem and it was only a matter of time as to when a confrontation was going to occur, with aggressive behaviour like that, I wouldn't want to have that Bear wandering around either because that is a Bear that is going to be trouble. The thing with this Bear could be also that he was a relocated Bear by the Natural Resources and Forestry service, if the Bear was a problem Bear elsewhere could be he was caught and relocated to your neck of the woods, wouldn't be the first time I have seen this occur with a problem Bear that has been relocated, sometimes the Bear is just too comfortable in and around an environment with people and dwellings. Never underestimate a Bear after all they are Wild animals and can be unpredictable and with this Bear I would say better to err on caution and dispatch the Bear with the behaviours it was exhibiting, because it wasn't if this Bear was going to be a problem but when he was going to be a more serious problem then he was being. Safety of yourself and others first

You wouldn’t catch me in a Canadian wilderness without a gun handy! I hope you stay hydrated, and thank God you got rain. Looks like your place is about 12 ft by 24 ft. My little cabin had a loft on either end, for sleeping, and storage space. Your deck will give you as much additional elbow room as you want, so that’s cool. If I wanted the energy to work sunrise to sunset, years ago, I’d put a heaping tablespoon of Kals brewers yeast into a glass of juice in the am, and drink that. If I forgot, I ran out of oomph.
