As a kid born in 1970, living about 25 mins away from Tuscaloosa, I'll never forget watching all the games with my Dad & family , when the Bear was the coach. Even at 9-11 years old, I wanted to play football for Coach Bryant so bad that I wrote him 2 letters....one in 1978 and one in 1981. He responded to both of them within just a few days...he replied to everything in my letters, gave me encouragement, said he hoped to be there when I was old enough... and he personally signed both of them. That made this young boy feel fantastic ! They're both framed and hanging on my wall to this day ! It says a LOT about Coach Bear Bryant to have players, cheerleaders and fans of Alabama AND the OPPOSING TEAMS go to see 'The Bear' after the games....just to shake his hand, speak to him or get an autograph ! He was Another Southern Legend, even before he died. ROLL TIDE !!!

My father took me to my first Nebraska football game in 1977 - against the University of Alabama. At half-time, Dad took me to the restroom, which at that time was adjacent to the visiting team locker room. I emerged from the rest room and waited for Dad at the door just as the Alabama team was coming out for the second half. I felt a hand pat the top of my head. I looked up, and there was a huge man standing there, wearing a hat like my grandfather used to wear. He asked me, "You enjoyin' the game there, son?". My dad had come out at that precise moment. He asked me whether I knew who that man was. Of course, I didn't (I was six years old at the time). He explained to me the mystique of Bear Bryant and told me I would remember that for the rest of my life. Dad was right. Incidentally, Nebraska won the game with a late go-ahead touchdown in the south end zone. I believe the score was 31-28.

What a shame one of college footballs greatest coaches was shackled by a passel of back woods morons. Dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century. His record could have been even greater had Alabama been more fully integrated. Few know that in his time at Alabama Bryant never defeated Notre Dame or Texas. He probably played undersized, Itty bitty guys for too long. Still a legend. A monument to hard work and dedjcation.

Well, I think Alabama tradition goes back all the way to the 1920's and 1930's. Rose Bowl games really put Alabama on the national sports map. Wonder what it was like for football players, coaches and fans riding trains to California and back? And, I believe Auburn used to ride a train to Birmingham for the game against Alabama. Even now, why not take a train from Auburn to Birmingham for some games? Is there any negative to that? Is a bus really any better?

Football is only a few years in a person life...a "short season in our life span". But like John Wooden noted it is "classroom for life". I used to live in South Bend, Indiana and have lived in many places Coach Saban recruits. Got to see Greg McElroy and South Lake Carroll in person many times. Got to meet Mr. Wooden in 1976 and was in his presence for about in hour and he read me like a "book"! He told me more "about me" than I ever thought....Mr. Bryant and Mr. Saban do the same thing. ROLL TIDE! Not half bad for a Texas Graduate who was a ND fan as a boy.

I was blessed with exceptional foot speed and was always the fastest kid on any football field I was on as a kid. About my 3rd year in Pop Warner in 1970 I was in the 7th grade so I suppose 13 years old and the team I was on our RB coach had played at Alabama under Bear Bryant and was a real firebrand hard nosed football coach that all the players really looked up to. I ended up hurting my back and it hurt pretty bad but when I ran fast it was excruciating...I was starting at HB at the time and I talked to my Dad about what to do...we both knew if I ask to sit out I'd lose my starting job so he taped my entire torso before my next practice to see if that helped....it really did help and got me through practice but when we'd run gassers it still hurt like hell and I ran just fast enough to get there first thinking I could get by on that much effort without being called out...Wrong, our RB coach immediately called me out...yelling My Last Name...You are Loafing...Quit Loafing...etc, etc. I finally had to drop out and tell him I was hurt...all he said was okay go sit down...I never started another game even though I was better in a week or two and was by far the best HB on the team.

I agree with at least some of the posters. It's one thing to be physically & mentally tough & to demand those things. It's quite another to be so tone deaf that you don't understand that there are limits to what human beings can endure. One wonders what might have happened if any of his players had died during training camp. Some of them wound up with heat stroke. Some of them had their careers cut short. That sounds like a really stubborn inflexible man. As a poster said, toxic masculinity. Thing is, you can create an environment of mental & physical toughness without ruining lives.
