Being out on the road has it's share of excitement and this time we're sure we had a bear prowling near our camp! Also, motorcycles and, in this case, dirt bikes are a whole lot of fun and our friend, Dawn, and her boyfriend , Kyle tell us about theirs, a Yamaha 250 WRF and a Honda 250 CRF. What camping equipment is working for us and what things aren't? We share some of that too!

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

I lived in Colorado at 10000 ft for about 25 years. I also flew a 172 Cesena up to 14500 one time without oxygen to get over some mountains. I figured I was pretty acclimated since I lived at 10,000 ft. I won't do that again. :) Little tip for bears. Carry a squirt bottle of ammonia. Spray it around the perimeter and keep the doughnuts away. Hard sided trailer won't do any good if a bear wants in. I've seen them stick there claws through a steel door and rip it to shreds. Ammonia works wonders.

That is what a biologist recommended to us after a bear ate 4 of our chickens and trashed their coop. She said to soak rags in ammonia and hand them in the trash cans and chicken coops.

Hi Rick, Hello Linda. Gee, this episode is quite Soothing. A tad different and really enjoyable. The 'Stillness' about the forrest and the wildlife is perfect. Bears or not, I'm at home in the 'Out of Doors'. A funny thought: while watching you Both Wherever you might be, I 'picture you all' actually 'being there' when in Fact you are Hundreds of miles away. Kind of Funny, kind of an Altered State. Rick, your Videos bring a Calming Effect into my body. Even if I'm in a similar type of location. The Chronicles being made with each step of your journey is a History Show in the Making. You both seem So Relaxed while having your wheels fixed, goes to show you 'Love the Journey' no matter what. It's Good to Travel-Along with you Guys. Thanks. I live in Weiser Idaho and we drove to a little town called Ola to eat in a tiny country restaurant Even though we had Idaho plates the sherif didn’t recognize our car and kept stepping inside and checking us out. Kind of strange but when we left I chatted with him a little. Really friendly guy but he just didn’t see many strangers in that little mountain town.

The motorcycle segment reminds me of a story.....my brother had a Honda trail 90 and my Dad wanted to ride it. My brother forgot he had turned off the gas so when my Dad took off, he only went a short distance and the thing ran out of gas. My Dad didn't have a helmet on and it thru him over the handlebars and he landed on his head in a gravel street. I have pics of him with a swollen forehead from the impact. Luckily he survived for many more years.

@@gonagain I'm excited to hear that because it's a simple pleasure that I am sure she will enjoy. You'll have fun routing the lines and hoses and such. It was a fun project. I recommend using a small backpack rain cover to cover the fuel tank. Install a tarp grommet in the side of the cover where the fuel hose projects out of the tank. I installed the fuel line about an inch off the bottom to be sure no water enters the TINY fuel line. "Outad" is the brand name of the rain cover and has a drawstring built in to fit snuggly around the fuel tank.

I am lol @ hard sided camper providing protection from bears.... any decent sized bear can peel open a camper as quickly as you or I can peel open a candy wrapper. The only additional protection a hard sided camper gives is an additional time to react and arm/defend yourself. That in itself is priceless. It may discourage a nosy curious bear but not a hungry determined one. I agree about the donuts. I have completely stopped buying donuts and most pastries cakes etc because they are overloaded with sugar. People seem to think that more is better.

LOVE your videos...thanks. Lori and I get a kick out of the "Matt's Off-Road Recovery" channel. We have to laugh at some of the people who take their car or rig into places they should never have tried driving. They are certainly expensive lessons, eh? So...have you guys ever found yourself in a place where you needed to "make the call"?

Hi Jerry, we try to avoid situations like those because it is an expensive lesson. Glad there is someone like Matt out there to help out, though.

When a cop starts watching you, I would say he was wondering what kind of law he could say you were breaking and write you a ticket. It’s good to see you not afraid to carry some good protection with you, if whatever it was in the woods was breaking branches or pushing down trees I would say about a ten foot tall two legged bear. Looks like they could have some fun on the trail bikes. Me, I’m the poke along look type, never could see why any one would turn their head down, riding or walking and not want to see what is on the side of the trail just see how fast they could cover distances. Might as well just stay on the highway. Take care my friend

The terminology for people that ride bikes and motorcycles in bear country is 'Meals on Wheels'. Bear in the daylight are way better than in the dark. I walked around a tree at my cabin in CO (11,870 ft) right at dusk and was facing a 300-350 lb boar at 25 yds. I had switched out my 45 Colt with bear loads for my 1911 with lead rd nose earlier so was a little under-gunned. So what did I do....I got out my phone and took pics. Ha! I woofed a few times and stomped my feet but it only stared at me. It did go behind a tree and stood there staring at me. A hungry boar can be worse than a sow with cubs. Eventually, it moved off. By the way Linda cows moo, they don't whistle.

Yup, my choice of defense tool also. But here it’s defense of cats and dogs, ha ha. Loaded with 55vmax (handloads of course) times 20. Got used to the M “Forgery” in my Patrol days. Grew up thinking they were finicky and inaccurate. My first training session changed my mind. Great episode!

That’s the moose capital of Colorado. Not sure they would spook cattle but unlike deer or elk who will usually run from from predators or danger, moose will stand and fight.

One time while traveling through Colorado I experienced the high altitude brain fog and then when taking my oxygen stats realized I was having trouble breathing. My O2 went down to 84 and a doctor friend recommended getting down fast to under 6000. At our age it can be dangerous.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
That's true Megs. I learned that to acclimate didn't mean that your body gets used to less oxygen, it means that your breathing rate increases naturally over a period of days. Makes sense.

My dad and his brothers and his dad were deer hunting at about 10000 ft in Colorado. One of his brothers had a heart condition, and his doctor told him not to go above 6000 ft. He didn't listen. He died in my dad's arms on the way to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 44 years old.

You've got great taste and smarts when it comes to motorcycles ... I've owned four different Honda's over the years one of which was a Honda DOHC 450 ... started with 1965 CB125 twin, 1968 CB350 twin, 1970 DOHC 450 twin and 750-4 cyl ... bought the first three in boxes and had either rebuild or reassemble ... all except the 750 four cylinder which was almost new ... also had 1969 360 Yamaha Enduro Trailbike ... Honda makes the best motors ... sounds like we both have made same choices when it comes to Vehicles and Motorcycles ... based on good mechanical sense ..
