Now wanting to stay with a chain drive for two reasons: simplicity, it’s already there and the trans seems okay, and, it’s got a bit of an old school vibe.
Time to dig into the enclosure and see what’s involved in swapping for an o-ring / x-ring exposed chain and if the existing sprockets are in any sort of useable condition.
Was expecting way more of a mess, but seems most of the gear oil had already leaked out!
And at the end of the day, decided to take an opportunity for a quick bonus…

The fact that the chain and sprockets are serviceable speaks volumes for full final drive enclosure. A bastard to work on though.

Hey brother, I still have a 1981 FLT SPORT CUSTOM, I call it, styled as a flhs, easy to do. Your rear sprocket should be a 46, I forget what the front is. I have it in my storage container, stopped riding it in 06. I do have a factory service manual for that bike. 83 was a very good year. The inclosed chain could run a very long time and never ware out. I don't know if you will find a replacement boot. I had a hub made by a machinist, or an early FXR wheel will do the trick. Your engine is probably the low compression with 7.5 to 1. Only problem is pulling hills. Out on the flats you can cruise 80-90 all day long. I made the mistake of trying to add power. Don't go over 8.5 to 1 compression. I went to riding a BMW R-1200-GS have almost 70000 on it. Just picked up a 1998 road king. I'm in the process of going thru it to be my long distance companion. I loved my T, the FLH was the bike that always caught my eye, I don't like the small framed bikes. In 94 they came out with the FLHR. IT WILL BE MY TOURER FOR THE REMAINDER OF MY DAYS. OOPS all caps. See what happens when you get old. I'll keep an eye out on you and chime in from time to time . O and don't forget the swing arm bushings, done properly the last about 10 years or so. Take care.
@tta850
@tta850 Ай бұрын
lol you are only as old as you feel! 1998 road king is sorta the look I’m going with, I have to check the sprockets. If it’s a 46 tooth rear then that’s perfect (that’s what I was looking for) everything online says it’s a 51 which is too much. Going to dig into the wheels next as some of my parts have shown up. Thanks for the info 👍🏻

Awesome, not only is the chain enclosure gone but you have a working trans! Old Harleys are fun to fix, they respond quick to a little love. I have helped bring a couple back to life, plus my '75 sportster needed something every week. That bike was not as fun, it needed something every week I rode it. It vibrated so bad, parts fell off going down the road. Mirrors only served to let me know the color of lights behind me- squiggly white, blue or red. The oil cap came off when ever it wanted to. I rode it though. Consider some type of chain guard, bad things happen when it balls up trying to go through the primary. Seems like I remember the chain being smaller on units with the oil bath, that might be wrong. About tire change, The oil bath stays on. You pull the axle out, and the spacer on the right. Move the wheel to the right to remove from swing arm. I think the sprocket drives the wheel by a nylon star inside the hub.

Good to see what's involved in servicing these old Harleys. I suspect you might have made your own life difficult by not starting at the top and removing the seat, bag guards, and side cover before moving to the shock and chain enclosure. I would also leave the enclosure off, replace with a modern o-ring, and just take care of the chain. I'd also ditch the bag guards, but that's just me.

I've been re-watching your videos on the FLT because I just found a great deal on one in my area, I made an offer, and he said that he would take it If it doesn't sell by this Friday. So, two days to go and 3,000 dollars, it's mine. It will be a nice addition to my stable. It's a 1992 flt and appears to run good (at least in the video), but my experience with shovelheads it will need some attention before any long rides. I also have an 81 flt shovelhead engine in reserve, just in case. I also wanted to comment on the clip style master link, I've been using them for most of my life, and I personally have never had a failure. Another nice thing about them is that they make it easy to change your chains, unclip, the old chain, attach the new one to it, then roll it through. Great videos, though it's why I'm watching again. My experience with the flt is nonexistent. If you change the front motor mount, be sure to watch several videos first.

I think the chain cover is a *genius* decision! Yeah, lubricating the conventional chain is very doable, but… A closed chain is way better lubed and boy is it a lot cleaner! Uncovered chain picks up dirt and sand and gets, well, sanded down and away, together with both sprockets. Enclosed chain keeps everything around clean as well! You essentially have all the benefits of a chain drive and a shaft drive, with none of their drawbacks (maybe the look is not perfect on both, I admit).

Great to watch this old Glide coming back to life. Converted my 2007 Dyna to chain 20,000 miles ago and wouldn't go back to belt,modern x ring chains are really good and PBI sprockets are top quality,I went with 25 front 55 rear and it suits me perfectly.

Good segment! I love the honesty you show, to me it means we can trust you to be real, not a cartoon caricature of a Biker! Are you going to strip the Harley down and give it an all-over clean and resto, or are you going to fix it up enough to flip it and move on? Personally, I hope it's the former... Thanks, mate, I can't wait for the next instalment! Lol. (I just found the rest of the vids, and I'm binge-watching! Lol).
@tta850

Well I’m not going to flip it, this one is with me for the long run… but I think fix it up enough to travel then plan a bigger fix down the road. But falling more and more for this bikes patina and character at the moment!

The old NSU motorcycles had similar concept of enclosing the chain, plus they had the hose of the overflow valve (if that's the proper English technical term for 'Überlaufventil') just above the chain, dripping a little oil here and there on the chain, thus making it last forever. Absolutely unacceptable for today's eco standards, I know :) but I was impressed with the idea.
@tta850

Lots of great ideas went by the wayside in the name of eco friendly environment, maybe that’s a good thing idk, but happy to try and keep some of the old ones on the road!

Like the video and the content keep it coming. If it were for me I would save all the original parts that come off the bike. That is what I do with all my old bikes. Down the road if you ever decide to sell it you have all the original things and it will be worth more money. Adjust my two pennies. Got to love the old bikes especially when you are going down the road on them.

I have a 1982 Tour Glide Classic that a previous owner trashed the oil bath chain enclosure. I actually think it was a great idea for that era before O ring chains were invented. Now the enclosure is not worth the hassle. I would like to figure out how to get a standard chain guard on there. Thanks for the video. I will subscribe.

I don't know how pertinent this is to your bike. I have a 1978 flh bobber running a BDL 3" open primary Kickstart only. I switched to a 47 tooth rear sprocket, the 51 tooth caused my hands to go numb at 60 mph because of the high rpm vibration (I don't know what rpm I was turning, no tach) but I can cruise at 70 now without the vibration making my hands going numb in the first 30 minutes. (I'm still using the stock front sprocket) Also, there is no real noticeable loss of bottom end torque. I'm not sure of the tooth count on the BDL pulleys so that might make a difference to.

@@rjoetting7594 Get yourself a pair of Kurakyn ISO grips. They're really comfortable. Hard to describe them. Got like raised rubber from within the metal. Like four squares on top and four squares underneath. Really take out the residual vibration. About $100 but well worth it. Even better if you're wearing padded gloves (palm). Check em out.
@tta850
@tta850 Ай бұрын
Yes that’s exactly my concern, also thinking of switching to an enclosed BDL belt drive (like my FatBoy has) but want to research if that will alter the gearing. A 47 or 46 would be much better for what I want to do, thanks for confirming my suspicions!

if vibration have, need balance tires,rims, first. thats have some speeds biggest problem and easy repair. or have wheel bearing end.

This is so cool to me, I have an 86. These videos are great. With my bike I’m thinking bout going the Road King style look and ditch my fairing. I’m looking for a headlight assembly, I’m curious to know how interchangeable parts are with these 80’s Harley’s. My gauges and the housing are exactly what I have to. On that housing there are the mounting bolts 2 per side. If it’s not to much trouble would you measure center to center on either side between those 2 bolts, I have roughly 6 5/8. I appreciate these vids, thx from Jersey

The chain enclosures are dangerous imo. if your chain breaks, rather than it flying off, it gets jammed up in the covers and locks up your rear tire. Which is far from ideal.
