Finally! The moment has come! The 1984 Harley Davidson FLT Tour Glide that’s been sitting neglected for 20 years goes on a highway run through all the gears (including 5th!) and takes us for a bacon egg and cheese bagel…
She felt great, very impressed and happy with today’s adventure even though it brings the discovery of a new leak… but that’s just another step in the process of bringing this old girl back to roadworthiness! Next up diagnosis of the leak to determine the course of action…

It's nice to see that there are still men out there who breathe new life into old motorcycles. Nowadays it's almost normal to replace everything old with something new - but not better - and throw away the valuable things. You get ridiculed for it, but who cares. I have the same project with a 94 Kawasaki VN 15 SE (Vulcan). It runs like the first day again. It also has an oil leak (valve cover gasket --> winter project) 😎😋 Greetings from Germany

Oil leak's probably from your mainshaft, like in leaking seal. Check your gearbox oil level, if low, don't overfill. It'll just throw it out again, when you park. There's very little oil in the primairy to begin with, it's kinda like a splashlube for the chain only, level should be just under or at the clutchbasket. Both levels checked with the bike upright. Have fun, keep 'm rollin'!

Probably has a chain oiler system. With the chain enclosure off. You can disable the oil feed at the oil pump . There should be a screw there that controls the oil feed rate. Screw it all the way in to turn off the feed. For. a perm solution you can plug the outlet.

Check your oil filter and connections. It’s directly over where that oil spot is. Also, on those early FLTs the filter housing is held on by a bolt that is notorious for coming loose and letting the filter dangle around. It’s an absolute bitch to het to the bolt , it comes in from the top of the trans where it bolts to the swing arm. The bolt itself won’t cause a leak, old lines will or a worn line. But checking that bolt is important regardless. Also the oil line to tank connections are over that area also, and, of course , kind of a bitch to get to also. From the angle in the video it seems center of the bike, which wouldn’t indicate the primary usually, that would be more under the left side as it sits on the stand. A cheap handlebar mount would let you mount a phone for use as a temp speedo, I had to do that while I figured out why mine wasn’t working. Also allows you to use you GPS function also. On mine it turned out to be the inner cable broke where it goes into the speedo, kind of a hard angle right there. Bike is sounding good, and those early exhausts are hens teeth these days. I found a Rhinehart for mine, the Super traps are excellent for mid range performance also, and relatively quiet , which are both kind of what you want on your tourer. I’m sure you’ve already discovered just how smooth those old FLTs are on the hiway. As to the RPMs, 3500-4000 is right where you should be at around 70ish. It keeps the motor right on the cam, in the power band. They’re heavy bikes and only had 80” motors, so being in the “ sweet spot” cruising is important. As is the ability to get all that weight moving from a stop. Not knowing what cam is in it, the Andrew’s EV 27 was an excellent upgrade for those old 80” Evos. Lots of power from bottom to midrange, where they need it most. But some of the early motors came with a cam that was very close to the 27 numbers from the factory, before EPA caused them to go to a relatively weak cam , shaped like a Christmas tree. Something to keep in mind when you change out the cam bearing and lifters for piece of mind in the future. Of course that MAY already have been done considering the quality exhaust used. Before long you’ll have the bugs worked out and become addicted to the old girl for a smooth , dependable ride.

Anytime i developed an oil leak i go full on CSI meaning im troubleshooting what type of oil it is. As you know it could be 1 of the 3 fluids thats leaking. I run different color fluids where some people choose to run 1 oil in all 3 holes making it a challenge to determine what is leaking. I run Red line gear oil (heavy shockproof) in my transmission and ATF Type F in my primary and HD Syn 3 in my motor. Not saying that you should do that also but that my secret sauce that has been working for me over the past several years. If you see an oil leak you can easily identify which one it is solely by looking at it. Youre in for a pleasant surprise. Buy a factory service manual and save the HD parts list for your year make and model on the internet which will make searching for the correct part for your "red headed stepchild" (one year only bike) Good luck!

Great point, so I do have Motul in the trans which is fresh and blue in color, so I should be able to at least say it is or isn’t that! I agree the three different sections should have their own oils, and now adding to that you can more easily diagnose a leak it makes even more sense 👍🏻

@tta850 troubleshooting that and fixing those leaks is such a major pain in the ass. I've been wrenching on HD's exclusively for 30 years and I create new cuss words every time I gotta dig into it. Even with all of the special tools it's never easy. I have hundreds of dollars invested in HD special tools but lack of attention to detail is what creates "rework". A Softail is by far the hardest thing I've ever worked on and I was a Submarine mechanic for several years! Lol

Mirrors were foggy I guess from being out in the elements for 20 years… that’s taken care of now 👍🏻

Could it be that the evo still has the chain oiler outlet on the oil pump? My father's 78 FLH still had that. Engine oil was dripped onto the chain. I also had a too short inner speedometer shaft. One piece was broken off cleanly at the end. Nice vlog, by the way!

Yeah, I just deleted the air assit on the forks of my 81 honda and added 20 extra cc of oil on each fork. The air assist is hard on the oil seals and I was replacing those already.

Have you drained, flushed and refilled the forks yet. Sitting as long as she has I would think that might be a problem.

Not yet only tried putting air in them and it didn’t hold long, they don’t appear to be leaking but I figure when it comes apart for the neck bearings the forks will get done at the same time 👍🏻

not familiar at all with the enclosed chain final drive set up. hopefully just residual oil from that cover. if not you have a seal on inner primary cover and seal on output shaft of trans. you running gear oil in either of those? if so smell what is leaking. if is gear oil it will stink like chit. this may help figure where leak coming from. also... trans should have a vent. if over filled it could spit fluid out. cool ol bike. i dig it. got a 95 heritage myself.

Are you going to replace a few worn parts like the ripped seat and giving the bike a lick of paint some touch up in places like the handle bar parts or are you going to leave it as it is? Lovely old bike, I like it!
