I saw Martin Scorsese's "After Hours" back when it was in theaters, a loong time ago. This homage to that quirky film was fun to see. I think it offers the key to Beard's feelings about Jane in the scene where he is in the church talking to God - "When I'm with her, the world just seems more interesting." Also, the blue moon is a symbol of Man City - it is their theme song. Also, Beard's alias, Declan McManus, is the real name of Elvis Costello.

I love that you enjoyed this episode, a lot of people didn't on the first watch. This is a great glimpse into the life of the enigma that is Coach Beard. Fun fact, Brendan Hunt really can hula hoop and the writers were determined to write that in, much as they do with other characters like Rebecca's singing, Higgins playing the bass and keep an eye out for more to come.

Took me a while but eventually it pays dividends next season.

Agreed, the almost non stop laughter through it all warmed my heart

Most importantly, Jane finally told Beard that she loves him.

I love all the episodes, but this is one of my favorites - Beard bonding with the pub rats, the big burly guy saving Beard and the little chat they had afterward, Beard's dance moves and hula hoop skills, the music...

The fact that this isn't the last we see of Burly Guy makes me so happy.

Loved this episode. It’s off kilter but it’s still good to have a beard episode. The 3 lads who can’t afford season tickets getting a chance on the pitch at Richmond, it’s wonderful.

I've read that the writers had completed all 10 episodes for Season 2, and the network came to them and said they wanted 12 episodes, so they put 2 more together to finish it off: the Christmas episode, and this one. Neither of those 2 episodes really move the storyline forward, but they aren't just filler, they do what I think this show does best, which is to get you invested in the characters, and character development. This is a definitely crazy episode, but that's part of Coach Beard's entire personality. I also love the pop culture references this show uses, like the Rom-Com references in bringing Roy in as a coach. I particularly enjoy the Fight Club reference in this episode, and the overall ethereal feel of it that is reminiscent of Fight Club.

I also went to Warwick (1997). So did Brett Goldstein (later than that, but before 2007).

There is something about football legend Thierry Henry staring into the camera and shittalking Beard that is just so funny to me.

Beard After Dark actually sounded so accurate I didn’t even notice the error! Beard Working Blue? I’m drinking my recent eastern interpretation of the Bloody Mary, garlic, Kim chi, ginger, dark soy, pickled green beans, in that direction!

This is often cited as being a really sudden pace shift from the series. Some people get whiplash. Some love it. They're all right. Its a shift... it's a vibe. And I'm in to it. Not just for the weirdness. But because... it fits. It isn't JUST filler. It lets us know a bit about Beard in a series that is ultimately about the characters traversing events. Up until now, we see Beard as this kind of odd counter-weight... grounding anchor... to Lasso's hyper-buoyant personality. A note of reality and information to a seemingly jump in feet first nature. At this point in the story we begin to find out why Lasso is like he is. But what of Beard? This episode is insightful. Some is reality. Some is perception. But all is about how Beard interacts and sees the world. He goes through life with his own odd views. And his own chaos explains why he would be OK with Lasso's energy yet at the same time have enough experience to pick up on the background info that Lasso so badly needs at various points in their endeavor. We get insight on what makes Beard tick. Its a heck of a ride.

Some jokes are good, but still one of my least favorite episodes. But it is a relaxing episode before the next one... buckle up. I found it funny when you said in the end that it is a joy looking at other people having fun because it is exactly why I like to watch reaction videos: to see other people enjoying things that I liked in the past. Love your reactions. Hello from Portugal. 👋

I am among those who did not enjoy this episode upon first viewing, and it's still not my favorite.... but it does really showcase one of the best things about Beard: he knows a LOT about a LOT. He is an absolutely voracious reader, and I'm pretty sure he has an eidetic memory, so he just remembers EVERYTHING. Unfortunately, it also spotlights one of my least favorite things about Beard, which is his unhealthy relationship with an absolutely toxic person who sees no reason to change her behavior or even try to be better.

The episode has definitely grown on me, but it's still my least favorite episode by a significant margin. I don't hate it- seeing a glimpse into the shenanigans Beard gets up to is kind of interesting- but ultimately it pales in comparison to the rest of the series
