Miles don’t mean shit when it comes to an engine! Let’s say this van was used in the middle of nowhere where it maintained an average speed of 60MPH. Well then a 10,000 mile oil change is 166 hours! That’s quite a reasonable oil change interval. Now let say this van was operated around here where your lucky to have an average speed of 20 MPH and likely even lower well then a 10,000 mile oil change is 500 hours or more!
@BeardedFordTechАй бұрын
So a little backstory. This is an emergency vehicle that runs 24/7/365 city and highway. When it's not running the roads. It'd idling. A lot. Kind of like a cop car. Some of them can see hours on the dash. Some I can't. Depends on what trim level. But I can tell you. They do drive. And they do idle. If not as much then more thsn a cop car. I like the name by the way
@Trump985Ай бұрын
@@BeardedFordTech I’d be really interested in seeing actual engine hours between services, for an example the gensets in the tugboat I work on run 24/7. Every Sunday I start up another genset and then change the oil and filters on the one I just took offline. This is roughly 168 hours give or take a couple. I generally get about 40,000-45,000 hours between overhauls on them. When I tear them down they are absolutely spotless inside, despite being diesels and the fact that we run the cheapest mineral based SAE 40 that the company can get, the stuff is delivered in tanker trucks or on a bunkerage barge. On the same tolken my daily driver that generally spends all its life fighting horrible commuter traffic in and out of places like NYC, Boston, and other east coast port cities gets its oil changed with Mobile 1 EP every 2,500-3,000 miles. I bought this vehicle new and have been absolutely religious about maintenance. I can guarantee it never went over 3,000 miles between oil changes! No one else has ever changed the oil other then me. This vehicle doesn’t have an hour meter and you can’t even get engine hours with a scan tool. Now here’s the kicker I recently had the valve covers off to replace a leaking gasket and to my horror the engine was filthy. Being a gasoline engine with only 60,000 miles and being considerably filthier then a diesel with 30,000 hours that a few hours earlier I had the valve cover off of to do a valve adjustment on. No sludge but a fair amount of varnish and buildup. This got me very interested in how many hours it gets in say 2,500 miles? So I installed an hour meter. Well guess what I discovered? At 2,500 hours I’m at close to 450 hours!
@BeardedFordTechАй бұрын
@Trump985 thay mobil 1 isn't helping the situation any. We talked about mobil one a few times. It's made to the lowest quality to be called a synthetic. It will go for about 1000 miles after that the engine gets a little louder and then used oil analysis shows it's no good anymore. They started doing they when other companies said they are "full synthetic" when they weren't. So mobiil took them to court and lost. So now there is a new standard. And they are like okay. We will make it to the lowest quality to pass the test. Doesn't matter after it's in your engine. They passed the test. Even GM doesn't factory fill with it anymore.

I was an Amsoil dealer a little while in the 90s'. I was running a 90 Ranger with a bypass and oil anylsis. The Ranger and the Aerostar van I had had temperature gauges that showed I was running cooler when using Amsoil over Havoline or any other petroleum oil. The gauge showed I dropped from the 'R" in NORMAL to the "O". I went at least 50,000 miles between changes. The 2.2 in that thing was so weak and it consumed a quart about every 2k. I quit the dealership thing and started running the dino stuff why I don't really remember. Seeing The Oil Guy has rekindled my interest in synthetics.

I used to run MMO in my fuel pretty often and I may start doing it again and see what the results look like. He did not mention any specific additive, just that Shell was adding this to their fuel. MMO has an interesting chemistry :). I know he does not like the stuff in the crankcase, but maybe in the gas tank it's a good idea. 70% Light Aromatic Oil (Pale Oil) - It is a Naphthenic Oil, so while it oxidizes faster than a Paraffinic oil, it does clean and dissolve sludge and carbon well and cleans up after itself from any oxidation. serves as base oil as well. [Naphthenic oils have more solvency and are more polar (they are attracted to metal more), but oxidize faster. 29% Mineral Spirits - Cleans Varnish very well. General cleaner. Also acts as an antioxidant. 38 parts per million (ppm) Boron - AW/EP agent, friction reducer, antioxidant 900 ppm Phosporous - AW/EP agent 1/2% 1, 2 ortho-Dichlorobenzene - EP agent as it interacts with Iron to form an Iron chloride barrier under any ZDDP or other AW additives. Also very good cleaner/solvent, and friction reducer 1/4% 1, 4 para-Dichlorobenzene - EP agent as it interacts with Iron to form an Iron chloride barrier under any ZDDP or other AW additives. @DW-Truck I spoke with him a while back after a livestream and told him I ran mmo once in my fuel. He said don't do that. It actually made my fuel mileage drop. Every now and then I run Amsoil Upper Cylinder Lubricant with a bottle of Amsoil Performance Improver. And every now and then is like once every 4 months or so. It hangs around in the system. I recently upgraded the rear diff cover that is curved and has baffles to prevent aeration. I used Amsoil servere 75w-90 in my 3.73 / 9 3/4 rear. I don't have a temp sensor in there, but I purchased an infrared laser. I measured before and after on the front side of the steel casing and I am seeing an 23 degree drop in case temps under the same conditions / ambient temps. One of these days I'll install a a real sensor in there. I need to the front diff too. Right now the truck is on Amsoil Euro 5W-40. Seems to be running as smooth as ever. Mileage is very misleading. it’s a useless measure of when to change oil. Engine hours and thermal cycles mean so much more. Most of the transit vans are used for delivery service in run all day and never shut off, or only shut off for one to five minutes, so the engine doesn’t cool off .This is a huge advantage over the average person who gets in their vehicle drives 30 miles shut it off and let it sit for 6 to 8 hours and then does it again ,thermal cycling the engine and stop and traffic is the worst for them. our trucks idle a lot, but they start at 7 AM and they don’t shut off till 3 AM. I change the oil every 3000 miles on the 6.0s, the 1 ton dump trucks are calling for an all change at that point and the pick ups are at about 20% .They’re not cycled all day. These engines do very well exhaust manifold never give us any trouble. We never snap studs or exhaust leaks versus vehicles that are cycled they have frequent exhaust manifold leaks, snapped the bolts also much higher rate of head gasket failure.

Would love to start using Amsoil, but $14.99 a quart for their VW/Audi 0W-20 European is so pricey. I need 8 quarts for my Audi and Mobil 1 is available at Walmart for 1/3 the price per quart. The Japanese chief engineer for the Nissan GTR engine said it is better to use a cheaper oil and change your oil more often than to use a more expensive oil and change it less often (so I change oil every 5k miles with Castrol/Mobil 1 vs OEM recommended 10k intervals with expensive oil like Motul/Amsoil). So I have stuck to this philosphy and it has worked well for me. Your getting a far better oil than mobil 1. That it made to the lowest standards to even be called synthetic. I also worked at Nissan for a while. And I can tell you. Cheap oil and frequent changes didn't help them. I recommend getting an oil test done. And looknagain at the prices. Not retail price. Preferred customer price or wholesale price. Remember. @ghostwrench2292 and that is exactly why I did this video. I tell a lot of those people remember when 3k was the norm. Then it bumped to 5k and you didn't care. But now it's 7500-10k and all the sudden it's a problem. When in reality it's not. A lot of the other ones you see where it's sludge is because the owner initially never changed oil. Then started to do long intervals. Or they use a low quality oil and thats what they get. But the mechanic working on it says oh no 10k changes are bad. When in reality like you said. A good quality synthetic oil and filter your just fine. Inside my engine on my ranger is clean as can be.

Just a word of advice Brother. Never use a 3 jaw puller on a balancer. The pulley is mounted to a rubber ring between it and the center hub. You can damage it pulling it that way. There is a specific puller that pulls from the flats on the center hub. Otherwise, great teardown.

@littlebearish yeah. Only puller I had. Let someone borry my other one 3 years ago. It grew legs and walked away. I did check the balancer though. No separation. But I'm going to replace it anyway to be sure. I though about that after I was done.

It has been running amsoil since I got there almost 3 years ago. I can't tell you to go 3k 5k 10k. A 3.5 ecoboost is considered severe duty because it has a turbo. That classifies it as severe. I can confidently tell you this. A. Don't use mobil 1 B. Only a used oil analysis test can tell you how far you can go. Start at 3k send it in. See if you can go to 5k. Then send it in. So on and so forth. C. I recommend www.speediagnostix.com for used oil analysis. D. My truck is a 2019 ranger with a 2.3l and I run the Amsoil XL just like the fleet. I went all the way to 10k testing. And it says on the bottle up to 12k miles service interval for severe duty. At 10k it was getting close to being done. Could have went 12k. Im.going to start testing Signsture series exactly how I did the XL series. So. As long as you stay away from Mobil 1. And start a trend analysis on different mileage to see how far you can go you will be fine. 3k 5k is not for everyone. Check out my latest 10k mile oil change video I think it's vs stop start.
