I tore one apart from the second generation 3.5 EcoBoost just to see what was going on with them. The bore that the locking pin seated in was completely wallowed out to the point the pin wouldn't hold it anymore. We didn't have near the problems with the style phaser you have here. Looks pretty decent for having over 200k. Great teardown man.

I'm really amazed how clean that engine is for having 200K miles. Where looks pretty negligeable considering that the engine is used hard. I like to dissect things to see what makes them work. I save little springs and things that come in handy later on.

Interesting seeing the inside of those. Also I found it interesting how much oil is still on those parts after being out of the engine for some time. Goes to show how much oil is still inside an engine when doing an oil change.
@BeardedFordTech

@richwitt3559 yeah. It's also still in the head. The cam journals. Everywhere. And people think it all just drains down when the engine stops. It takes a very long time for it all to drain down. Internals are pretty cool looking. How it works off oil pressure

Nice to see the inside, but how do they work exactly?
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech Ай бұрын
@unleavenedkaraiteplus3412 i explained it at the end. Uses oil pressure to andvance (move forward) or retarded (move backward) the timing of the camshaft. This allows the valve to have a longer or shorter open or closed duration depending on engine load throttle input first starts etc etc. When cruising or at an optimal speed the pin locks the inside and keeps it at normal timing.

Seeing your cluttered, dirty shop makes me feel better about my own "barely organized chaos" haha. Seeing the youtube mechanics with pristine, spacious shops with floors I could eat off of makes me feel like a failure.
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech Ай бұрын
@truthsmiles organized chaos is correct. We just get so busy like a hurricane went through. But we know where everything is. The very first bay we don't use. It's just where we keep pallets and big stuff. When we clean it's nice. Then we get busy again. Drives me nuts. We are in the process or should I say first stage of building a bigger new shop. I do need a little more room.

There is no reason today that they wouldn't take 2 seconds to park the cam phasers before engine is stopped. The same ecm/pcm control that allows the start button to be an input for the automated start can also use the button depress as a shut down n process that parks these so lock pin is in position for the next start. The oil draining out eng off and then the cam lobes load on up ramp followed by the load on down ramp throws the center fore and aft while the chain driven outer turns at its normal pace. The lock pin slips past the lock hole as lock hole is full of oil. Enough cycles of this and the lock pin and hole damage is done.
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech Ай бұрын
@@jimmyaber5920 that was the issue on the gen 2 3.5 lock lin. They redesigned it to look like this one. I like the way you think
@jimmyaber5920
@jimmyaber5920 Ай бұрын
@BeardedFordTech the internal springs are good but those can't get the pieces to the lock point with oil in the way. The PCM can trank crank-cam position and know when oil flow applied has shifted enough. Hell for that matter, the engine could stop and the starter rotate the engine 4 rotations 30 seconds later as long as all safety gates are cleared(hood latched and Park position achieved). All this stuff exists, use it! Some cell phone app code writers could fix it if they knew the targets!

So basically the locking pins won't/don't engage and or aren't engaged on startup? What if they used a little more oil pressure and or volume? Would that help the situation. I'm a trans drivetrain mechanic but I've done a bit of everything, but not so much on cam phasers. So I'm trying to wrap my brain around this stuff. And I got a buddy that's got a sick super duty 5.4 three valve, he's been after me about.:(

As someone who is very slowly learning do all engines have these? What actually do they do? I recall 1 of the police explorers I had to maintain with only 300 miles on it bitterly snapped the camshaft in half.
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech Ай бұрын
@Sayitlikeitis1234 not all engines. Usually pushrod engines like the chevy 5.3 or the ford 7.3 or 6.3 do not have them. Dual overhead cam engines do. They turn the camshaft forward(advanced) or backward(retard) to let the valve stay open longer or shorter depending on engine load and speed an many other factors. Basically giving better fuel economy. More power when needed etc etc etc. How did it snap the camshaft?
@Sayitlikeitis1234
@Sayitlikeitis1234 Ай бұрын
@@BeardedFordTech they never were able to determine. This happened about 7 years ago when the explorers had the water pump issues. Tech was not happy as it clearly needed a new engine but ford required a complete tear down of the engine with pics etc. took over a month for the approval for a new engine and the squad never ran good after the manufactured engine.

Are you recommending to floor accelerator, while spinning engine every time I operate my 2016 f150 5.0.
@BeardedFordTech
@BeardedFordTech Ай бұрын
@user-roadwander no. Does yours rattle on startup after sitting all night? You can stop the rattle by doing that. It's called flood mode. If you still have a rattle when doing it. Either the phasers are too far gone. Or the chain tensioners have llst their hydraulic pressure. Always do flood mode after an oil change. When you hold the accelerator pedal down and crank it ,it won't start. It helps prime the oil system quicker. Once you release the throttle it starts. I always do it on all Ford (except the 6.7 powerstroke cause it doesn't do it) after an oil change. This was more common in the 3.5. The 5.0 did it now and then. Not really a rattle though

Your videos just show keeping your oil level up is more important than doing short OCIs. Obviously you need to change your oil at least once a year but this 3-5k mileage is BS. Considering it was 3-5k in the 80s and we've had 7 API upgrades since

@bigdaddymak1439 yep. Can't do once a year on these. Or my personal. I do like 2500 in 3 weeks. These are fleets (emergency vehicles) They hit 8-10k quickly. They get abused. It's not like a person and their daily driver. Yeah 3-5k was normal back then. A few years ago 5k was normal. And nobody cared. Now it's 7500-10k and people flip out.
