Honeybees can be very confusing to the new beekeepers, and whats looks like swarming could actually be something else. Bearding bees is completely different than swarming bees. Bearding bees accure when bees are getting to hot on the inside of the hive. They can be overcrowded some, but not to the point of swarming. As the night comes, the biggest part of the Honeybees will go back into the now much cooler hive.

This doesn’t happen much in Michigan, but I definitely panicked and thought my bees were swarming when they did it for the first time. It was super hot and humid that day, probably about 88°F

Thank you for this video. I started with two NUCs, and one of my colonies is very strong. It was 90 degrees here today, and both of my hives were bearing. I was worried about them not having enough space, but they have a new box to start filling up. I have a screened bottom board coming in the mail, so I hope that helps cool them off.

Thankyou, thats so helpful to see for a new beekeeper like myself. We seem to be getting lots of ground nesting wasps at our smallholding here in the UK, oh how I hate them ! Been using repeated treatments of soapy water down the hole late at night then sometimes some fine mesh and a dump of sand.......

Hey David, I figured this out a couple of months ago. After a beer or two I get out of the pool and pet my bearded bees. Just an exercise in getting in getting comfortable with the girls without BPPE. Thanx for the 3 queens I have gotten from you over the last month or so. The first one replaced a package queen that wasn't doing her job at the time. The 2 I got yesterday are in the splits that I prepared. The one that replaced the package queen has been going gang busters since she was released. I found eggs on 3 top frames the day after.

When I get stung by yellow jackets I get out the vinegar and put it on the sting then add some ice or cold juice bottle. I got nail in the lip today and that's how I treated my sting.

Easy to tell if you have multiple colonies, if only one is bearding its getting ready to swarm, if they all are its unlikely.

I use a upper entrance and will place 1/4 dowel rod about 3 inch long to prop up edge of super creating another entrance. Ventilation is critical

Honey gonna melt. Queen has a lower and a upper threshold for temp tolerance. I use mesh for bottom here in Florida, they still beard. Bees have slowly evolved ,like so many other living things, and nitched with adaptive behaviors to adjust and survive to conditions.... Beautiful.

I agree with the yellowjacket sting vs honeybee sting. Yellowjacket tagged me last week, not much swelling, but it hurt and itched for like 4 days straight before it got little better. Yellowjackets are no joke. I hate them too.

As you say, bee sting just hurts for a short time I took 1 sting from a yellow jacket (European wasp here in Ireland) and it was still sore 5 days later.

I found two yellow jacket nests by my hives. I went not poison route. They are deadly. Like they can swim through the ground. Covered me. They would have definitely killed me if I wasn't covered up but even then they still got through three shirts. If you want to use poison or gas then be my guess. They are impressive.

Those ground nest are deadly and yellow jackets are extremely territorial. I used a desiccating non toxic dust and pumped it into the hives I found.......very effective but it takes time.

David, when you find a yellow jacket hive on your property - what do you do? Sorry about the sting, that is a sting I remember from childhood. It just kept hurting....

I use wasp spray on them. As long as its a good distance from the hives. This nest was in my wood pile. I hate these things lol.

Bearding is also a defense mechanism. Robbers will not attempt an attack on bearding hives

I’m the opposite, I get stung by a honey bee I’m in severe pain and off work for 10 days, I used to run 3,000 colonies and I got stung so many times I’m allergic now , I wear a full suit sealed up tight and have a safety protocol like no other 😂
