This music video and many others are actually in a movie Melanie created. K-12 the movie is a movie/musical where all the songs are songs off her album “K-12” including detention being one of them. I definitely recommend reacting to the other music videos. Every song in that album has a music video corresponding to the scenes in the movie and it’s amazing!

Theme of the song: The song speaks about being in a state of loneliness and how peers don't care about your feelings as long as you make them money, and that suppressing your feelings by pretending to be happy is some form of mental torture. The song could also be bringing awareness to how society treats celebrities with mental illnesses negatively.
@gio-gl2pj4 жыл бұрын
this song is about her record label or the music industry in general. when she says “ur too busy seeking selfish wishes dont care how im feeling” shes talking about her label and her feeling trapped and being pushed to do stuff just for the benefit of others:) this is a movie btw its free on youtube. its a visual to her album k-12. its so cool how she uses the school environment as a metaphor to talk about social issues. love the melanie reactions😀looking forward to more. she is such a good artist and her vibe is like childish but she makes it dark. cry baby was her first album but u should start with k-12:)

the lyrics "f### how i feel as long as i make money" can also be referred to how with schools funded by the government lose out on money if students don't get their seat time hence the use of "detention". which is why i believe the "principal looked like that when he was counting the money at his desk.

My advice is that don't watch the k-12 movie if you're not a fan of melanie, because k-12 is much more of a visual album than an actual film so there's no like actual plot but just music videos connected together for each song.

A sad fact about melenie, The reason why bunnies are featured in her music videos so much is because her first pet in her childhood was a bunny. One day, she game it to her friend to pet sit, then when she came to pick it up it was decapitated in the backyard... Which is also the reason why she has her bunny tattoo.

It feels like she’s in a relationship where she doesn’t feel seen or heard. Like if she feels she has to use her magic to get out of detention...tortured that’s what it feels like. She wants to preserve herself her values and whoever she’s with is too controlling. She’s submissive but I think she’s resentful.

Her music video gives me "Suckerpunch" movie vibes where the lead character "babydoll" is commited to a mental institution and copes by envisioning that it's a brothel. she imagines that the owner is a mobster and she dances for him and his friends. she can mentally escape by feeling as she is manipulating him. in "Detention", I think the entire dance scene is in the principal's son's mind. she is using her powers to make him think of her sexually so he can get her out of detention.
