We met cub and mama on the trail from MtLeConte to Alum Cave. They were walking opposite direction. So we stopped , backed up, waited untill cub went up the hill and mama followed no sooner then 5 min later. Got 10 min delay by them. Hour later another young bear at Alum Cave 7p m when there was nobody

Most hikers do not carry a gun and even most do not carry bear spray. Black bears aren't too aggressive unless provoked. Feel free to observe them, but do not approach. I was certainly fortunate to see all these bears at one time.

No one was ever killed by a bear on the Appalacian trail but thirteen people have been killed by OTHER HIKERS. You might need protection from some of the loonies on the trail but rarely from a bear.

Black bears have poor eyesight but a great sense of smell. Make noise as soon as you see them.

Great footage of the bears, are there any grizzlies on the Appalachian Trail?. I'm in the UK, so meeting bears in the wild is fascinating, if a little scary. I've seen quite a few videos about hiking the Appalachian trail, and it's not so much the bears you need to worry about, its that other animal called a human being. My advice for what it's worth is, always carry bear spray, but remember that its not 100% reliable , and always carry a gun, cause it could make a difference to coming home safe and sound.

No Grizzlies. In the US, they are generally found out west in the mountains on the PCT and the CDT. But watch out for the Moose on the AT in the far northern states.

Never ever get that close to a black bear. I grew up at the foot of the mountain and black bears will attack without provocation.

These bears would have attacked had they been very hungry and needing to eat badly. The bears would have not hesitated even a moment to go right for any humans in order to eat. Be careful; a lot of fatal bear attacks are black bears. Black bears attack humans to eat (consume).

Black bears attack without warning. They are much more aggressive than grizzlies. Usually grizzlies attack for food, black bears attack just because they are predators.

Or if you are near a food cache. But saying that they won't attack unless_______, is still a dangerous way of thinking. Don't get close to bears no matter how cute they look. Bears have a variety of personalities just like people do.

That is not true! Black bears are more apt to attack than any other. I grew up in the Smokey Mountains and every year someone gets mauled or killed because they thought black bears only attack when their cubs are present.
