I think it's timeline--dystopia and villains in movies have an arc and a series of highlighted events in a course of an hour or so in movies and ~10 hours in a show. I feel like MrBeast fundamentally misunderstands the enjoyment of game shows, its about knowing the contestants and picking your favorite to root for and the games themselves, where as MrBeast has just thrown money about on all the factors BUT that, like all I heard about this show was how much money there was and statistics, he's obsessed with numbers "2000 CONTESTANTS!" "5 MILLION DOLLARS!" "100 POTENTIAL ELIMINATIONS!", not anything else, and also kept cringey with how the "MrBeast crew" kept on trying to get a crumb of screentime lol

They could have had cutaways to people who were in future episodes so you can get to know them and watch as they overcome the challenges, but still never knowing exactly which episode they are going to be eliminated. Knowing a memorable person is making at least to episode 5 will keep you watching to see what happens to them

My girlfriend competed on this show. There were so many good stories and character arcs they just… didn’t do anything with. So much potential just thrown out because he really wanted to have crazy numbers for everything. She won’t admit it but she suffered to be on this thing. Not fun watching it basically squandered for week after week.

I think that’s just why this show was always just destined to fail. The scale of the amount of people they were involving was just way too big, with too many games per episode, and the filming style just couldn’t build a relationship with any participants because of it. The dumb part of that flaw is that Mr beast already had a solution with previous videos. In the 100 KZbinr video every one of them had GoPros they were filming off of and speaking to give their perspectives and plans. If they just had that then with each episode they could have those storylines and struggles that form the basis of all of these competitions!

Gonna be mildly contrarian and suggest that Jimmy is a fundamentally decent person who ended up the captain of a runaway train because he was so good at running the little train at the zoo that shuttles families to different exhibits. The thing about MrBeast’s videos is that most of them are (evidently) scripted, which sets them apart from TV shows. When real winnings are involved, TV shows must adhere to strict regulations. On a podcast, MrBeast even discussed how this shifted the entire approach for his team, probably one of the reasons why the games seemed so dull in comparison.

I think rather than scripting problems it's the format, you can get away with engaging the audience with quick challenges and minimal contestant focus in a 10 to 20 minute video, if you extend that to an entire show it becomes hard to get invested in anyone or anything happening

I’m pretty sure the main problem with making the human element and the personal stories of the contestants a bigger part of the show is the simple fact that there were 2000 people to start out and there’s still hundreds of contestants after multiple episodes. I’m only partway into episode 3 and I think we’re still in the “let’s get this down to enough people that we CAN tell stories” phase. It’s MrBeast, they had to go Big there were too many people.
