This song was so integral in who I became as a person. I was 17 when I first heard it and when I checked out the lyrics I was touched in this sublime fashion... man, MCA was such an original and a pioneer, after he helped bring hip-hop to the forefront, he brought social consciousness to it too, at a point when there was (and is still) hardly any. Fantastic video here. R.I.P. -- Rap In Paradise, Adam "MCA" Yauch.

I always thought MCA had the best flow of the Boys. The other two sort of epitomize the Beasties' soul: playful and a little obnoxious, but always clever. MCA was the heart, though -- the one who sounded most natural on the mic, and the one who (arguably) aged the best. To echo other comments, I miss him. I've seen many friends and family pass away, and lots of bigger celebrities, but for whatever reason MCA not being around makes me feel old more than any of the others.

In the commentary for Ill Communication they talk about this very performance - fuckin wild to see it. I suggest people search youtube and hear what they had to say about it - its so crazy, this is the only time The Update was ever performed live.

Just searched this up while listening to the Ill Communication album commentary (from the 2009 remaster) and they talk about how they played this live once and Adrock played the upright bass. There's a chance they're misremembering, but this could possibly be the ONE time they ever did this song live. So it's pretty amazing there's video footage of it.
