The drum intro is Led Zeppelin's "When the levee breaks", while the guitar is a sample "Sweet leaf" by Black Sabbath.

Probably one of the most widely used drum samples in hip-hop. All started with this track.

@@DoctorCreepy13 A good song and sample but no where near most widely used drum samples in hip-hop. It's been used about 260 times. Consider the following; Amen, Brother about 6600, Think (About It) around 3700, Funky Drummer over 1900 times. All songs worth checking out.

This is a "no skip" album, came out in 1986, "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn" is on this album. They were still in HS when they made this album with producer Rick Rubin (who started Def Jam in his college dorm room). I need to check your other Beastie reaction.

This is true. Not a bad/boring song on the whole album. I had to keep buying new copies (on both cassette & CD 😂) because I would just wear them out from repeated play.

They were a punk band before they started rapping. There's an album, super rare. They all play instruments.

They were 3 best friends until they lost one member young, at 47, and therefor disbanded the group. The entirety of their decades their goal in writing was to make each other laugh and have fun together as buddies, doing what they loved together.

The Beastie Boys were friends with and hung out with Rick Rubin at his dorm room at NYU. They discovered LL cool J's demo tape on his floor and told him he had to listen. The next year, Rick Rubin and Russel Simmons, (Russel was the brother to RUN) Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J started Def Jam records. Making this the very first rap album to go platinum, ever.
@mikefetterman678217 күн бұрын
Run DMC ( the kings of Rap) had a very similar style of rhyming. Mixing rock riffs with beats. (Ali Baba and the 40 thieves) ......This is their first album, but they were on the KRUSH GROOVE soundtrack the year before with the song SHE"S ON IT. And the year before that (1984) they released COOKIE PUSS the single that got them noticed.

@TheOtherBrotherAli7618 күн бұрын
What's really kind of nuts about the Beastie Boys is that they were a pretty decent, kind of doing well punkish band called Cookiepuss before they switched to Hip Hop. That's alot of the reason you hear such a heavy rock influence in their music.
@michaelj341418 күн бұрын
Sorry to tell you but Beastie Boys shot their own videos using the creative mind of Nathaniel Hornblower, MCA's alter ego. You must watch the videos, too. It's all part of the package.

Song is mainly about pirates. References to getting thrown in the moat, Davie Jones locker, parrot on his shoulder, piece of eight and more pay attention or pull up lyrics next time you listen it will make mores sense to you then
@mikefetterman678217 күн бұрын
"His voice is not straining, and he is sick of people complaining./......." Ad Rock comments on how harsh his voice sounds. They record facing each other, they have their lines coordinated where they each take a turn and the song keeps going round and round as all 3 throw their best bars to that beat. They added REVERB to the track to make it sound as though it was a big concert hall. It is just a recording add on. They sampled the beat from Led Zeppelin' LEVEE BREAKS song, that was recorded in a tall mansion stairwell.

Great reaction…keep diving deep! Love the fact that you were feeling the rhyme style on this one…the passing off lines by the group. That style wasn’t invented by them but, they definitely put their own flavor in it (check HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER…a masterpiece). If you’re interested in the origins of the style, you have to go back to the earliest hip-hop records by groups like Treacherous Three, Funky Four + 1 more, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Cold Crush Brothers, Fearless Four, etc.…they pioneered that style…it was more common back then because there were fewer solo M.C.’s. Groups like Run-DMC and the Beasties grew up idolizing those groups and so they put their own spin on it when they got in the game..

The whole song is referencing classic pirate tropes, the production was very sparse because they used reel to reel tape for loops no samplers. It was basic the only "real" instrument they had was an 808.
