Honestly, I understand the "no cheese" request. I don't think it's necessarily that he thinks he's gonna win. But falling apart to a cheese strat feels so bad that it almost feels like redemption if you then have a normal game. I mean, he's still gonna lose and he knows that, but at least he can play normally

The non-cheese request makes sense though. Cheese strat can appear as something that doesn't work at a high level but works only bc he is bad. Normal is just another fun game -- albeit one where he is destined to lose.

Beasty i propose a challenge: to beat an opponent (hardest AI or low elo player) while doing the LOWEST APM possible! This way it would be interesting to see how far and accurate your predictions are, and for us new players would be cool to learn how you read the game.

to think every time I play against an english player they're longbow rushing me a minute after aging up and these guys just sorta fart around. I can kinda understand the cheese though. he knows he's going to lose, he just wants to feel like he got to play. a lot of these strats (barbican rush, villager rush) require way more skill to counter than to execute, and most of us just auto lose to them. I beat a barbican rush once and a villager rush like twice ever, but most of the time even if I deal with the problem, I'm so far behind, that that's the game anyway.

The reason this is a better game to play than SCII is the same reason it's harder to watch: no banelings, no disruptors, no widowmines, no Oh shit! I wasn't watching for literally 2 seconds, guess I lose the game. It's a slower, methodical game where decisions and execution cumulatively win the contest, rather than a split second requiring eight hands to control. But, for me at least, that means I have to be in the right mindset to watch the game, even though Beasty is fun as hell to watch.

Easy, don't send the the scout to gather sheep at the edges of the map, if you see a couple of vills gunning towards you, you'll have plenty of time to build a barracks with the vills on gold and counter-attack. He's sacrificing a lot of economy on that cheese strat, if you counter it you'll have a massive advantage in feudal, it's all about how greedy you want to be with your scout against civs that have early game cheese strategies.

Someone replied in chat that he's doing it so he can delete the edges of the wall. They aren't needed for the wall to be complete, villager pathing is better and resources are saved.

Wouldn't Abbey of Kings have been viable there in that first game? You had enough wood to build a barracks during the age up, and a few MAA could protect the forward vils right after the age up (if neccesary). And then raid afterwards with MAA (and longbows after building an archery range). Either way, the game was pretty much over at that point.

Yes it does improve gold per minute. But he can't because he's optimizing resources (ie wood). Same reason he needs to use straggler trees, he can't afford lumber camp and make one on his tree line. Not building a lumber camp means he saves some wood. But do note, not all strats need to use straggler trees, but here beasty just needs enough lumber to get enough building to get enough gold for when he needs the gold it will be there for him.

@@sirbobdesign Off the top of my head I think i recall only the mining building and houses surrounding the gold increases gold per minute. Don't quote me on that hahaha. Maybe other buildings work to but houses and mining have the smallest footprint so you can fit more around a gold mine. Its Its something like 90 max gold per minute on small gold and 120 max gold per minute on large gold...because you can fit more houses and mining hut around the bigger gold.

How did the very first fight vil rush work tho. He didn't deny secondary gold at all or wood so was it just the enemy blundering?

Caveat that I don't play this game much but it looks and sounds like it was because it delayed the opponent so long that they fell way behind the point of redemption. Losing the scout meant no sheep so food was behind. Losing prelate means losing the extra resources from it. Denying the gold meant he had to long distance mine for feudal which is a big waste of vil time (+ the extra wood chopped for that barracks and mining camp). The rush also made the opponent lose the Riegnetz bonus for gold and food because he had to take the farther gold and deer. The follow up longbow harass slapped extra hard because those farther resources weren't even close to TC and towers/units to defend costs more resources they didn't have. All this time Beasty is pumping his eco like it's a sandbox and I guess that's plenty enough to make up for the initial wasted vill time. Like I said I don't play this much so IDK how much of that was opponent error. Losing the scout and prelate seems like something that shouldn't happen for free.

In AoE4 the edges of the wall can be canceled to save some wood and the wall will still be totally closed off. If you notice when he selected the wall segments, there are two different icons, and he selects the two edges and cancels them. High level players will do it to save some wood.

The opponent lost because it's Beasty, like he said 9:50. A player on the same level as beasty will micro out each low health villager, survive that rush and get to feudal first
